In 2011 Belgium started issuing commemorative stamps honoring famous places in the country. This is the second issue, depicting the market square in Brugge. The square was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Center in 2000. There are two forms of the stamp, one version released October 27, 2012, which was designed to be sold in ATM (yes, Automatic Teller Machines). The second is a sheet of 5 stamps released October 29, 2012. Both use lace as a background, and what makes the sheet truly unique is a laser cut lace corner. It is very finely done, almost overdone as if there were some unintended holes in various places. But comparing my example with others, they all seem to be the same.

The issues were designed by Jean Libert and Guillaume Broux. The souvenir sheet is 16 cm x 18.5 cm. I do not have an example of the ATM version, so am not certain of the size. Face value of the sheet is 3.25 Euros.

The sheet may still be available at the bpost site, and I have seen them for sale on Ebay and DelCampe. The ATM version is proving more difficult to find.

Auction ends: May 20, 2013 12:58:50 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A length of square-meshed Valenciennes in a narrow border. Tightly worked with a fairly simple design of flowers and single spots in the ground. A little frayed on the picot edge in spots, basically good condition.

Auction ends: May 21, 2013 18:14:08 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A narrow, long Valencinnes border, slightly scalloped with a typical design of flowers and spots. 3 joins. The mesh is more rounded than the border reviewed above. Overall good condition.

 No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/b8ery8q Antique Brussels Mixed Bobbin & Point de Gaze Needle Lace Veil/Shawl Ex Cond
Size: 25″ x 110″
Starting Price: $100.00
Auction ends: May 21, 2013 19:00:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller 2posies4u, Chesterfield, Missouri, United States
Comments: A rectangular scarf of bobbin and needlelace application on machine tulle, with scalloped edges, which is unusual. The needlelace is used in some raised petal Point-de-Gaze-like flowers and leaf sprigs, and in a few bobbinlace fillings. Good complex design, note the esprits in the ground. Comes with a great provenance. Looks a bit discolored in places, but the lace itself appears to be in very good condition.

 Sold for $289.00, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/a3fkho6 Bedfordshire bobbin lace collar and cuffs — white and wearable
Starting Price: $5.00
Auction ends: May 22, 2013 09:26:33 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Comments: A collar and matching cuffs of Bedfordshire bobbinlace – unusual for them to have survived together. The design resembles the ‘Rose and leaf’ pattern of the Bucks Cottage Workers Agency, probably early 20th c. Seller cites some breaks along the collar neck edge. The pieces look a little wrinkled, maybe a sign of earlier washing? Overall good condition.

Starting Price: $49.99
Auction ends: May 22, 2013 11:17:30 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A set of lappets, and I’m going to tend more to a French origin here. I had to get out the books on this one. The flat-grounded Flemish needlelaces of this period normally did not have the raised edge cordonnet, and the clothwork was more varied. (the raised edge in Flanders is associated more with the droschel-grounded needlelaces). There was a lot of crosstalk between France and Flanders at this time, even though they were in direct competition. Designs, of course, change over time, but the Flemish motifs tend to be larger. Levey in “Lace – A History” attributes a similar lappet and cap back set to France in figure 294, 1730′s (remember France includes Sedan, so there’s a possible origin there). What ‘mode’ fillings are here look more French to me than the contemporary Belgian work. Other figures in Levey that you can examine include plates 259, 260 and 273. Seller cites many faults/separations and early repairs. I don’t care about any of that, this is an amazing set technically, and of a type that rarely comes to market.

 Sold for $899.79, 6 bidders.

Comments: A fan of good quality Bruges bloemwerk with amber sticks and an elaborate monogram. It’s not a large fan, and the large lace motifs seem a little overpowering. The condition looks very good from the photos.

 No bids.

Auction ends: May 22, 2013 12:45:43 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller merveillesdeparis, Paris, France
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, snails/slugs period. The motifs are tightly woven, and note the interesting use of the square tallies in the corner motifs. A few broken brides create the appearance of several holes, but I don’t think this is serious, and could be repaired. Auction ends: May 22, 2013 13:59:59 PDT
Comments: A border of Blonde bobbinlace. Probably French Blonde de Caen origin due to the use of the honeycomb stitch filling. Maybe earlier 19th c due to the very light appearance and extensive use of halfstitch. This is a lace that doesn’t survive well over the years. Condition is short of good with all the holes, but it doesn’t come up too often.

Auction ends: May 22, 2013 14:35:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Chicago, Illinois, United States
Comments: Potten Kant wasn’t really a type of lace, it was more a style. It was made extensively throughout the low countries primarily for the Dutch market. It is a heavier lace with the symmetric flower pot and flowers. This is a good example, probably 19th century, although it was made in both 18th and 19th centuries. I think the fond chant/6-pointed star/kat stitch plaited ground is a later development. The bottom edge has some damage in places, unfortunate, since good examples of this lace don’t come up too often. Somebody needs to do some research on this style and write a book.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with mother of pear/abalone sticks. Raised petal rose in the center Point de Gaze insert. The lace is a bit conventional in design, but the condition of both lace and sticks is very good.

Comments: A silk embroidered leno-weave (buratto) net from the Jane Page collection. It does look like it extends upward on both ends, but that part is cut off. There is also some not very good darning repairs done to the net. As to age. Buratto was an easier way to make lacis, which was done on a hand knotted net. There is an early pattern book called ‘Buratto’ by Alessandro Paganino date 1532. Examples of this lace are usually dated starting late 16th century, but it was made all the way to the 19th and early 20th centuries. Probably there are places still making it today. So we have to go a lot on style in dating these things. From the style of the design I think an early 17th c date is not out of place. Although with a piece this old and no early provenance, you have to be very careful. Condition is good considering the age.

Comments: These lappets, which I would call Valenciennes since we really don’t know that much about the small Binche industry of the time, have been cut at the ends, but are otherwise in very good condition. Just a few small stains which would clean up nicely when appropriately washed. The design is a repeat of flowers in a pot with an extensive ground of the snowflake variation called oeil de perdrix (partridge eye). Probably made sometime in the 1730′s. The design isn’t quite as exciting as some, but it is a rare, beautifully made set.

Comments: An excellent example of gros point which has been remade into what is probably an insert for a dress or skirt. The lace has a beautiful carved ivory appearance, with great impact from the simple use of variations in the clothwork. The raised edges are rather plain but highly sculpted – a sign of an earlier piece, perhaps mid 17th c. I’m of the firm opinion that there’s nothing in needlelace that you can’t learn from a good piece of early Gros Point. All this reassembly is connected by some kind of later Venise bands. Condition, given the reworking, is very good.

Comments: A cap back of Brussels Bobbinlace with droschel ground, around 1760 is good. Well done motifs with raised edges and a few interesting fillings – not much. The design is a little scattered, it’s a large area to fill with a lot of small motifs. But the basic Louis XV design is intact. A few stains, some pulls, pinholes and small repairs. Basically good condition considering the age. There is a wax seal attached from some past collector.

Comments: A bertha of Bruges Bloemwerk. This is an unusual form for this lace, and it doesn’t seem to have an opening. I almost wonder if it was originally the edging for some kind of table linen. But it works well as a collar. The motifs are quite large and tightly woven. Very good condition, very minor discoloration in one spot.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A Brussels needlelace with droschel ground. The design seems to be flowers in pots (seems to be a theme today) alternating with flower sprays. Good and varied fillings. The design is quite naturalistic, overall this is an excellent example – you see bobbinlace with the droschel ground quite often, but needlelace is much rarer. Dates around the mid 18th c. This is a long, collectible piece in very good condition considering its age.

Auction ends: May 24, 2013 10:38:46 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Ex. col. Pat Earnshaw. A joined pair of Mechlin lappets. More flower pots. Actually, 18th c pieces with images other than flowers are a bit rare. Good Mechlin lappets also don’t come up that often. This one looks cut at the top before joining. There are numerous small holes, and the edges are very ragged as the seller notes. So the condition is short of good.

Comments: The photos really aren’t close enough to tell, but this piece has a good feel, so I’ll say it’s a Chantilly lappet scarf. It has a naturalistic design of small flowers and large leaves, some of which overlap onto the outer edge at the ends. Looks in very good condition from what I can see, although I can’t see too much.

Comments: A Honiton shawl collar with long front ends, large motifs. Basically slug/snails style, quite nicely done, especially the roses. Lots of square tally fillings, and picoted rectangular brides. An occasional loose bride or tally fastening, but overall it looks in very good condition. Quite a nice example of the style.

Comments: Brussels bobbinlace application on machine tulle does a lot with border, veils of all sizes, handkerchiefs, but doesn’t too often get into smaller shaped pieces. This is a good looking, fairly deep collar with lappet ends – not really a mantilla shape, but not too far off. A well done finely worked piece with small naturalistic motifs, and lots of esprits all over the ground. Seller cites a few small holes and pinholes. Looks to me like there might be a repair to the net in the main part of the collar, and the edges of the piece are rather frayed. Basically good condition.

Comments: This is a piece made from a wide mid 18th c Brabant lace, probably wide borders. Could certainly have been an alb flounce as the seller suggests. You can see a join about a third of the way up from the triangular point – not sure if it’s the same lace, but they do look similar. It has a fond chant ground, and fillings of plaited zigzag brides and bars. Looks like there is another join at the left end. The design is rather flat and plain, but that’s the nature of Brabant. The lace looks in very good condition (disregarding the assembled nature of the piece).

Comments: This is a kind of torchon tapelace thing. It does have a Northern Italian look, but frankly I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. Linen thread with light storage/age staining. Basically good condition.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine tulle, quite nicely done and in very good condition. The dense border makes the inner part look almost like Point de Gaze. Note also the careful attention to the border along the center cloth.

Comments: A flounce of Spanish ret-fi black blonde lace. It’s rare to see this as a standalone piece, it is normally used in mantillas (see the last item in http://tinyurl.com/b5775gc). It has a very distinctive design. Note the 5-pointed star fillings, which is very indicative of the Spanish blondes. This lace unfortunately sometimes is subject to rust stains due to improper storage – something about the dye reacting with the silk. Seller cites some brown marks, but I don’t see any in the photos. I do see some weak spots, what looks like racroc splits (these were made in strips), and a few holes in the net. Basically good condition.

Comments: A narrow collar of Brussels Duchesse. Raised rose petals in the Point de Gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is fairly conventional for Duchesse, and the piece is in good condition. It does look a little shrunken as if it has been washed.

Comments: I don’t know where this was made, it doesn’t have the palm leaf edge you see in ñanduti, but some of the fillings look more like what they do. The silk center is also quite unusual. The technique is finely done, and the overall condition is very good.

Comments: Yes, I helped out on the ID for this one. Irish crochet dress front with matching cuffs. I’m suddenly struck by just how much the little flowers on either side of the center flower look like motifs from Dillmont’s la Guipure d’Irlande book. The heavy knots in the ground look somewhat like Clones knots, but if you look really close they seem to be folded over loops of double crochet or something. It’s a beautifully done set, and I’m thinking a French origin isn’t out of the question. Condition appears very good.

Comments: A wide Chantilly flounce with a bold design. Wish there were more closeups. No ombre shading, and the repeat is fairly short (probably Belgian origin). The looks of the piece is nicely balanced top to bottom. Long Chantilly is fairly common, but pieces this wide are a little unusual. Looks in good condition, seller shows one ‘rip’, and says there are a few catches in the net.

Comments: A matching Maltese collar and cuff set. Kind of a stark design, just massed woven leaves (beautifully done) alternating with Maltese crosses and flowers. Lots of plaiting on the outer edges and neckline. Looks in very good condition, although maybe a little discolored in places. Seller says it could use a wash.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with Mother of Pearl/Abalone sticks. With box dated 7 JUIN 1902, so this is a rare dated example assuming the box is original to the fan. Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine tulle. Comes with a worn Duvelleroy box. Mother of Pearl/Abalone sticks. Both lace and sticks are in very good condition. The lace is very naturalistic with finely worked motifs. They almost seem to float on the fine tulle ground. A few needlelace accents used as fillings in the flowers.

Comments: A border of Belgian bobbinlace with droschel ground, around 1770. Note the threads of the ground carried along the back of the motifs – the motifs were made first and the ground added later in narrow strips. Unusual to have something this good survive so well for so long – very good condition. Just a few pulls here and there.

Comments: I’ve been talking with the seller about this piece. Kenmare might be a little bit of a stretch, but I was struck with some resemblance to the 1911 tabernacle veil shown below in the National Museum in Ireland. Something about the band in that piece look a little familiar, and there is raised work in both. However the piece up for sale does have lots of excellent bobbinlace, and lacks the needlelace ground of the Kenmare veil. My second guess would be Italy. Then again there seem to be some fleur-de-lis in the upper border, so maybe France? The piece is a little aged in color, but basically in very good condition. Size: 2.5″ x 38″
Starting Price: $55.00
Auction ends: May 13, 2013 10:00:29 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A length of early 18th c bobbinlace, Binche or Valenciennes. Exactly which is unknown. It has a 5-hole ground, a light design, and many tallies, making this the early predecessor of today’s Point de Fee. The picoted border is a later addition, and the upper edge is so hidden by the engrelure that it’s hard to tell if it is intact. I suspect it was cut down both top and bottom from a larger piece. There are quite a few holes, so condition is short of good. But this is quite a rare lace.

Size: 3.5″ max x 17″
Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: May 13, 2013 10:05:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: Part of a Valenciennes lappet with snowflake/partridge eye ground, ~1730. The pattern delineation, the technique, the thread are wonderful, the condition is not. Numerous holes, well, the photos say it all. But it comes from one of the greatest bobbinlace traditions.

 Sold for $182.55, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/ca9nnzx *Antique 18thc MECHLIN Bobbin Lace Long Lappet *
Size: 2.75″ x 58″
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: May 13, 2013 10:10:20 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: This lappet scarf is made from one length of Mechlin joined along the footedge. Not an uncommon arrangement, you see this in lappets and also cap backs occasionally. Here the join is well handled, and the termination nicely done. The lace looks around 1770, but I’m not sure if it was assembled this way at that time. The length of the piece is appropriate to a set of two lappets, but it lacks the gap for the cap back, which one would really expect at this time. The edges are rather frayed, but the main part of the lace is in good condition.

 Sold for $229.10, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/cofjhbt *Antique 18thc Brussels Bobbin Lace Trim / Edging. *
Auction ends: May 13, 2013 10:15:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, ~1770. The design is fairly simple, there’s a possibility it is English Devon. Well done work, and just a few pulls and pinholes in the ground. Very good condition for its age.

 Sold for $77.60, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/bvgfurt *Antique 18thc Brussels Bobbin Lace Trim / Edging. *
Size: 41″ neckline, 7″ deep
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: May 13, 2013 11:09:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A Carrickmacross applique bertha, a fairly unusual form for this lace. Note the lines of rings in the centers of various flowers, copying similar motifs in Point de Gaze. Not much in the way of cutwork which is often found in Carrickmacross applique. It deviates from the usual Irish motif designs, and overall is quite effective. Very good condition, I think I see a few spots along the neckline, but not much else.

Sold for 174.96 GBP, 10 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/bs9svtn ANTIQUE LACE HANDMADE CHANTILLY LACE LAPPETS C1880
Size: 3.25 to 3.75″ x 46″
Starting Price: $45.99, $65.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: May 13, 2013 17:19:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A lappet scarf of Chantilly. The design of roundels, like a long string of large beads, is quite unusual. There’s a small flower in each of the roundels – the design is a little simple with heavy black thread, probably a sign of Belgian manufacturer. Condition looks very good from the photos.

 Sold fror $51.00, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/ckmbgex Antique/vintage Bedfordshire lace collar
Size: not given
Starting Price: 9.95 GBP
Auction ends: May 14, 2013 12:35:50 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A small English Beds collar. It’s rather remarkable, when Beds does come up on Ebay it’s usually being sold from an English seller. This one has a inner flat piece, could be used as a dress front, with a gathered plaited border. A good, typical design, not fancy, and just a minor pull here and there. Very good condition.

Sold for 17.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/d8clotk Gorgeous! Antique Victorian Chantilly Black Lace Shawl
Size: 22.5″ x 67.5″
Starting Price: $74.00
Auction ends: May 14, 2013 16:55:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Idaho, United States
Comments: A black embroidered tulle mantilla-style headcover. Note how the direction of the flat laid stitches changes direction to catch the light – something I think might be traced to Spain. It has the look of the black blondes, especially with the small tendrils terminating in circular holes – you see that in the blondes too. Looks in very good condition, just a minor pull here and there.

 No bids.

Size: 23.5″ x 18″ laid flat. 7.5″ deep in the collar part.
Starting Price: $74.00
Auction ends: May 14, 2013 18:26:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller *tangleblu*, Valley Cottage, New York, United States
Comments: I’m not 100% sure, but I think this is silk Irish Crochet. The emphasis on rings, rather plain picoted brides, and the slightly different design which is dictated by the slippery thread are good signs. Silk Irish crochet doesn’t come up too often, and this is a very nice example. Seller cites some minor discoloration, basically very good condition.

 No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/cxouk9x Antique MALTESE LACE Table Topper 21″ ROUND Hand Made Doily HONEY SILK
Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: May 14, 2013 19:15:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller junymoon, Derby, Connecticut, United States
Comments: A silk Maltese large doily with the silk center shaped into a Maltese cross. Typical designs, and a three-layer concentric construction to the lace. I do like the roundels with massed woven leaves in the middle layer. Seller cites some age darkening and minor frays along the joining seam at the right. Basically good condition.

 Sold for $46.85, 2 bidders.

Auction ends: May 15, 2013 11:45:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A narrow border of silk Blonde de Caen. A simple borderof leaves with ‘v’ shaped esprits in the net. A few pulls in the delicate mesh, but basically very good condition. This kind of lace doesn’t often survive this well.

Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of flat needlelace, and I think it’s an early English example. Note the picoted rings used on the brides and the lower edge, you see this in English needlelace. The closeups are a little smeared, but I think it has the typical English open structure, which is a sign of a knotted stitch, not twisted. It is a very long piece, not completely photographed, but the design looks fairly intact from what I can see – not sure about foot edge. Overall good condition.

Comments: A long bobbinlace guipure insertion. Looks a little like linen thread, but there’s only one photo so hard to tell. This seller is showing some similar items. Looks in very good condition. No idea where it was made.

Comments: A very long, narrow Chantilly border. A simple design of acanthus leaves, quite vertically arranged, meant to be ruffled. No esprits. Seller says it is used, and looks in good condition from the photos. Value seems to have gone up from the 2 pounds 10 shillings appraisal.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A type of Belgian needlelace that I sometimes call ‘point de gaze guipure’. That is, it has Point de Gaze technique, but lacks the looped ground, although it is sometimes used as a filling stitch. Normally when you see this lace it isn’t much in the way of design, but Pat’s collection has revealed at least 3 pieces which give one an idea of how good it can really be. It almost has an early Sedan look (see my lace of the month post at http://tinyurl.com/bewrwkj. I need to search through all the old books to see if I can track this down in the 19th c. This particular piece plays a lot with design and fillings, it has a colorful look. Basically good condition with a few holes, and a little repair work.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, quite a narrow border, but very well done. No raised work, with a naturalistic design, especially in the corners. It has a rather architectural look. A few holes in the net and clothwork, overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller billie2381, Wadebridge, Cornwall, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief, raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. I really wonder what ‘laundered stress test’ means… The one complete photo is pretty out of focus, but the closeups are good. Seller cites a pinhole in the cloth, but that’s trivial. Otherwise very good condition.

Starting Price: 120.00 GBP
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A set of Alençon/Argentan lappets from the 2010 Althorpe sale. From the measurements and photos it does look like there are two matching lappets and the connecting band where the cap back would have been attached. Fairly rare to find this arrangement, and if the cap back were present I’d forgive all the condition issues. Unfortunately it isn’t there. The ground is brides bouclée (buttonholed on all sides), which is pushing this piece into what today is called the Argentan style, mid 18th c. The clothwork, ‘mode’ fillings, and regularity of the mesh are all excellent. But the piece is unfortunately brought down by the condition of the mesh, and gaps in the fillings.
Just a note on photography – a trend I’ve seen in recent posts. The photographs have a kind of creamy appearance which hides a lot of detail that really should be there. This isn’t the only listing where I’ve seen this. It may be due to newly introduced digital cameras, I’ll try to track this down.

Comments: A point ground border – I’ll call it later 19th c Lille mainly because of the square tallies used as esprits in the ground. Bucks or Tønder are possible, but the Catholic iconography to me speaks more French. Note how many of the religious motifs are done in half stitch. Ecclesiastical laces are a special area of collecting, and not always to everyone’s taste. Usually you find things like large alb flounces, so a narrow length like this is uncommon. Condition is good, although there is some fraying in spots along the footedge. Seller cites one small hole, and overall it looks a little wrinkled.

Comments: A border of continuous bobbinlace with a plaited 5-hole ground. At first glance it does look a bit like an early Flemish predecessor, and I think it’s a little finer in texture than the photos might indicate. However it seems to have more in common with the North Italian Piedmont freehand laces. The picoted border has been added separately, and so solidly that it’s hard to tell if that edge has been cut or not. Such ‘enhancements’ were often made in the later 19th c to give an older lace a more modern feeling, which could point to an earlier origin for this piece. But not too much earlier. Overall good condition.

Comments: A kind of triangular shawl with a neckpiece of muslin applique on machine net. The edges of the motifs look tamboured, which would point to a Belgian origin. Seller cites 2 small holes in the net and some age marks. Looks a little wrinkled. Overall good condition.

Comments: This seller is listing several pieces from the 2010 Althorp sale. This one is a 3rd quarter 18th c Valenciennes border, ’round hole’ ground. The design depends on well worked plain clothwork with a few lines defining the pattern. Condition on this is short of good with a lot of edge fraying and some holes. But it a favorite lace of mine and doesn’t come up that often.

Comments: A small Irish Crochet collar. Tightly worked motifs with good raised work. Looks like Clones knots; a little hard to tell from the photos. The design is a little strong for such a small piece. A few spots, and the photos look very white, maybe bleached at some point? Overall good condition.

Comments: A fichu with a central oval tulle base, and a deep edge of Mechlin. Lots of good Mechlin. Even more than it looks since it is gathered and surrounds the whole piece. It is nicely arranged to fold over on the back and show off the lace. Some discoloration, but overall very good condition.

Auction ends: May 12, 2013 06:15:10 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller aboveeverything, Lake Worth, Florida, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with Mother of Pear/Abalone sticks. Wish it had been photographed fully spread out – hard to assess the condition from the photos. The Point de Gaze inserts look quite good with more naturalistic designs. The bobbinlace is a bit conventional. No condition comments, it does appear to have some broken sticks. From what I can see the lace looks in good condition, just a little discolored.

Comments: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw. A deep collar of Honiton applique, with two layers. Snails/slugs period, with large nicely done flowers that seem to float around the shoulders. A nice color, not white but a well aged cream. The motifs are crisp, no holes in the tulle that I can see, and overall very good condition. This seems to be the week for assembled shawls and collars.

Comments: A triangular dress insert of Brussels Duchesse. A Raised petal rose in the Point de Gaze insert. The bobbinlace looks a little on the Bruges side. One spot that I can see in the PdeG mesh. Overall good condition. This seller has a number of similar pieces listed.

Comments: A Carrickmacross applique handkerchief with religious symbolism – unusual. Perhaps meant as a paten cover? It is a rather small piece. Nicely done work; a little sparse/modern esthetic, and looks in good condition. Just a little stained in places.

Comments: A handkerchief of embroidered machine tulle. Tambour embroidery, with a well done good design. It has a nice presence. Seller cites some light stains, and I see a little fraying along the edges. Overall good condition.

Comments: The neckpiece is attached separately on this piece, which is a deep collar reaching high onto the throat, although it doesn’t come all the way around the neck. It looks like a Beds piece, although a bit unusual. It almost seems like there’s something behind the large roses around the edge of the piece- wish there were a photo taken from the back. I’m a bit puzzled on this one. A few spots especially at the ends. Basically good condition.

XX Seto Pitsipäävä – 20th Seto Lace Days
Date: May 5th to May 15th, 2013
Place: Seto Farm Museum
Värska, Estonia
Time: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Websites: www.visitestonia.com/en/seto-lace-days, http://www.setomuuseum.ee

The Seto farm museum has a wonderful collection of local folk items, especially costume and textiles. Information on the lace days is a little sparse, and I am not sure how much bobbin or needlelace might be expected, or what events are scheduled. I was able to find one explanation on the visitestonia website:

“The Seto Lace Days bring together handicraft enthusiasts from far and wide. Lacework techniques used in Seto handicrafts are showcased in workshops and exhibitions and visitors are taught how to implement them in contemporary handicraft. The culmination of the event each year is the judging of the competition entries. For visitors this is an excellent opportunity to try their own hand at the art and see the masters at work.”

Fees: for the museum, 2.00 EUR adults, 1.00 EUR students, 1.00 EUR pensioners. Guided tours in English 5.00 EUR, other foreign languages 25.00 EUR.
It seems that the lace events are free, not sure of the details.
Thus there are a large number of exhibitors and many courses and workshops. The only lace-related workshop I could find is:

Scuola dei Corsi Merletti di Gorizia
12 hour course entitled “Gioielli d’autore’. 250 Euros, held over the three days of the event.
