Comments: Very similar to the lacemaker’s stool sold by this seller as Ebay item 120707667516 (See Ebay Alerts for April 14, 2010). This one appears to be in very good shape, solidly constructed. Seller says it is typical of pieces from Auvergne.

Comments: Good Irish Crochet collar with single knot on the brides. Design is a bit confused and not entirely symmetric. But I like some of the motifs with their raised elements. Condition looks good, little loose piece near the right endpoint of the inner collar edge. Nothing serious.

Comments: Early 18th century; this kind of lace is very hard to attribute. Note the almost ‘5-hole’ ground, sometimes seen in Antwerp laces, and used with finer thread, in mid 18th c Valenciennes. You also see it in early brussels laces, with the same rather scattered, disconnected motifs. Add some small tallies, switch to a finer thread and a snowflake ground and you have what today is called ‘Binche’. Although we really don’t know much about the original products of Binche vs Valenciennes. This is such a difficult lace to place that many authors avoid it altogether, or just call it some kind of Brussels or Flemish lace. Someone should really try to nail down a history.

Comments: If it weren’t for the ground, I’d say this is a 17th century Flemish bobbinlace. Interesting, and quite a puzzle.

Comments: Another very difficult one to place. I’m thinking this might be a freehand lace, although the ground is a little unusual. Ricci shows similar things from Pescocostanzo. And some of the Piédmontais designs in François Monneret’s books aren’t too far off. But most of those have a kind of kat stitch ground.

Comments: A better than average Belgian lace front. This would have come with cuffs and a collar piece, but it stands well by itself. Nice fine bobbin motifs, and the needlelace is extensive with interesting fillings. A few spots, but overall good condition.

Comments: Sellers are really digging themselves into a hole with the description of this one. Let’s just call it Brussels Duchesse. A real wild flower garden of a piece, looks very tossed together with some symmetry elements, but not entirely consistent throughout. Looks somewhat deliberate, but a puzzle. A little damage to some of the needlelace, but overall in good condition.

Comments: Two nice rosaline perlé pieces, which seem to be complete, not fragments. Perhaps meant for cuffs. The pearls are needlelace rings, which is a bit unusual, and gives this lace a nice, crisp appearance. Look in very good shape.
