Comments: A good Carrickmacross collar, primarily applique on machine net. Note the raised centers of some flowers. There are a few embroidered stitches filling various spaces, in others a cut away bride filling. Overall conditions seems good – there is fraying along some edges. Some motifs look a little puckered as if washing occurred at some point. It’s a nice example in a well-designed single piece.
Sold for 36.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Comments: A very good border of Italian Milanese, later 17th century. Beautifully ‘drawn’ designs in the tape, and well defined holes. Note how the tape actually passes behind some elements in the motifs. A lace like this doesn’t need any bride ground, it stands perfectly well on its own. The thicker edge looks original. The thinner edge is hard to tell, rather frayed, but could also be original. Otherwise condition is very good. An impressive piece.

Comments: A long length of reticella with a bold, well-worked tripartite design. It does a lot of a simple repeat of the main motif. I can’t seen anything obvious, other than the bottom edge cut right to the stitches. The condition is almost too good!
Such laces were made in the 16th and early 17th centuries, and survive in Italy, Greece and other nearby areas even until today. But this does have the look of an early piece.

Comments: Flemish or Italian? The fairly plain borders would argue for Flemish. Theis is a fairly narrow piece, andathe smaller motifs also might be consistent with Flanders. I can’t relaly make out how the ground was made – for an Italian piece I’d expect a more obviously plaited mesh – almost a kat stitch. The smaller trefoil heads on the branches seem to lean Italian. But without looking more closely at the ground I guess I’d put this more Flemish than Italian. Few stains, but overall good condition.

Comments: If you look at the symmetry of the tape, and the way it travels from one motif to the next at the top, it almost looks like an Abruzzi tape lace variation. But the little brides, some with leaves, are more a mark of Milan. So I’d put this as North Italian, but a fairly coarse design. I don’t see any ovious condition problems – little fraying maybe in spots on the edge.

Comments: Looks like this is two separate pieces joned together, although they are quite similar. Note the transition in the lower edge, and the right part doesn’t seem quite so exuberant as the left side. But I’m a bothered by the technique. The ‘stems’, for lack of a better word, seem to have a loose buttonhole edge on both sides – this is something you see in Belgian laces. The French and Venetian Coraline and Point de Neige laces always make their ‘stems’ as flat, solid bands, with a close buttonhole cordonnet on both sides – or as in Coraline, with no edge at all (see the next piece for examples of what I mean). And the lower edge seems a little stiff. I’m wondering if this isn’t a later copy, maybe even Irish. Just speculation, but a test of the thread, linen or cotton, could tell a lot. Overall it’s a little frayed, but basically intact.

Comments: I’m much happer with these. The top is a Venetian flat point, the bottom a Point de Neige. Both very nice examples, and note all the frills on the Point de Neige. Especially on the bottom edge. These are short segments, and there’s a seam in the second one. some stains and general wear.

Comments: Probably Nanduti, although it lacks the palm leaf semi-oval edging. Definitely an earlier, more elaborate piece. The roundels are varied and quite interesting. A little stained, but overall very good condition.

Comments: This is certainly unusual in that it has all been kept together. The founce is an impressive, wide piece of Duchesse de Bruxelles, later 19th century. The cuffs appear to match. I see a few small rings of needlelace used as fillings, but nothing more extensive. There’s a large tear near the edge of the lace, as well as a few other holes, but looks repairable. Overall it appears in good condition.
