Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: Cuffs of Belgian Rosaline Perlé. Not enough closeups to see if the perles are bobbin or needlelace – I’m guessing needlelace. The design on these relies entirely on the motifs without any brides. Condition is very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: Dress front with standing collar – looks made all in one piece. Good Point de Gaze with conventional Rose design, nicely executed and in very good (exceptional) condition. Raised petals on the roses, and some good use of decorative fillings.

Comments: Religious lace is a specialized area, one that doesn’t often appeal to everyone. The iconography in this one is varied and interesting, although the lace itself is a little primitive. The figures remind me of similar Italian work, but not exactly. Let me suggest something – Canada does have a tradition of bobbinlace made in convents – apologies no time to look up the reference, perhaps a reader can help. Could this be a local product? A little damage in one motif, nothing serious.

Size: ~16 cm x 300 cm
Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Feb 14, 2012 03:06:40 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lunnantiques, London, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A good, long length of ‘Brabant’ lace, a bit narrower than one might expect. Actually it’s quite a nice piece. The term Brabant basically places a lace outside of the major manufacturing cities like Brussels and Ghent, although there isn’t any particularly good reason for doing so. And the Brabant geographic region was larger than it is now back in the mid 17th century when this was made. It’s a bit of a derisive term, and sometimes people try to pass it off as English, again without really good reason. This design of this piece is a bit haphazard, and the work itself a little loose – all characteristics of this lace. It also doesn’t have any mesh ground, which is more on the Brussels side, and might point to a slightly earlier date. The piece is a kind of halfway between the really good Brussels products and the ‘Brabant’ style. Condition looks very good from what I can see.

Comments: The collar and cuffs look like they might go together, although the work in the leaves is denser in the collar than the cuffs. Still they make a good set. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Comments: This is a strange piece. I can’t say it isn’t Honiton, and I wish I had a closer look at the mesh. The motifs are definitely atypical, but the Honiton tally fillings do seem to be there. Condition appears quite good, seller cites some minor pulls.

Comments: A good length of early 18th century Mechlin, fine work with nice crosses in the ground. It almost has the look of Beveran. A few minor frayed spots along the lower edge in the photos, but otherwise very good condition. Very similar to #350531487874, but that one is joined together from several pieces.

Comments: Definitely a piece for the middle market. Tread looks like linen, and it has a great bold design. The needlelace fillings in the bobbin tape motifs are surprisingly elaborate. I’m out to sea on this one, maybe French? Or even Irish? It just doesn’t have a Belgian feel. Note the long picots on the brides. Some yellowing, but overall very good condition.

Comments: I put this one up because of the outer point ground fringe of lace – it looks like the Regency Point that I wrote about as Lace of the Month back in March 2012, although it doesn’t have the inside gimp. Could very well be a Lille piece. The inner edge also looks a bit like Bucks – photos aren’t very close, but I’d say that’s a point ground, not Mechlin mesh. I’d call it a draw between France and England, probably leaning toward France. Condition looks very good for a costume piece.

Comments: A mid 18th century pieced lace with droschel ground – hard call between Belgium and England. There might be a clue in the raised work that extends so far into the design to delineate sections of the leaves; some people say this is an English trait.. Good fillings, but the overall design is a bit plain. Very good condition.

Comments: Brussels application on machine net, bobbin motifs with an elaborate floral design. Note the extensive needlelace ring fillings, sometimes used in a grid. No esprit work in the upper mesh. The whole design is a bit different from what you usually see, quite effective. Some unfortunate holes in the net, but not too serious.

Comments: A good length of a narrow Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The motifs are delicately made, with round esprits in the net. No needlelace that I can see. Condition seem very good, I don’t see any problems. That’s unusual for a piece like this.

Comments: This piece is in far too good condition to be very early, I’m guessing 20th century. The woven triangles were not used in early Italian laces. It does have very interesting needlelace figural motifs. Could be an Aemelia Ars piece, or even perhaps Ruskin lace? Condition looks excellent.

Comments: A very long Valenciennes border in very good condition. The design is a little predictable, and the work isn’t terribly ambitious. But what do you expect in making this same pattern day in and day out for, oh, probably 6 months? This is a lace which mainly trimmed linens and nightwear. The length is extraordinary.

Comments: Very well done work – instantly recognizable as top quality from the very large Clones knots and tight motifs. The design of this lace can be terrible, but the work is always excellent. This one is a very good border to a now missing center. Not in particular the well designed corners. Condition looks very good.
