Offered by: Ebay seller chineurfou34, Béziers, France
Comments: This looks like a Vande Voorde Flemish Pottery lacemaker, one of the smaller sizes, and also making it a very high quality piece.  Seller cites two small marks, one on the pillow, one on the chair.

Sold for 15.50 EUR, 2 bidders.

Size:  26″ long, 13″ across at center
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: Mar 19, 2012 12:02:14 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller shotgun*wedding, MILWAUKEE, United States
Comments: I like Irish Crochet used as a textile, which is certainly the case here.  It’s a shamrock and wheel pattern, with some Rose of Sharon thrown in. I won’t guess the date, but the characteristics of this lace are quite early, and had a long-enduring popularity. Appears in very good condition, I can’t see any problems from the photos.

   Sold for $22.49, 5 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/78nbtr9 Antique Handmade Dimensional Irish Crochet Lace Collar
Size:  20″ across top, 12″ top to bottom point
Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Mar 19, 2012 13:21:44 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller wendybac, Sun City West, AZ, United States
Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front with attached neckpiece.  Good motifs, tightly worked, with central raised work. Square picoted bride mesh. Overall condition very good, maybe a few loose threads. Pieces like this are a bit difficult for the collector to store, but the neckpiece could be detached and all laid flat.

   Sold for $76.00, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7bzsebp Irish Crochet Lace tightly worked Cuffs + Collar 19thc Col Dentelle Irelande
Size:  20″ across top, 12″ top to bottom point
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Mar 19, 2012 20:10:47 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: Two cuffs and matching neckpiece of Irish crochet, in good condition other than 2 or 3 small holes.  The motifs is a trefoil spray of a simple flower with heavy raised rings.  I think the ground picots are clones knots, a bit loosely done. This simple but effective pattern helps speed up the work, and is a motif found many time in Irish Crochet. Wish we could track down the manufacturer – it is so distinctive.

http://tinyurl.com/7rxuxpp Irish Crochet & Needle Lace Pair of Cuffs 19thc Poignets Dentelle Irlande
Size:  20″ across top, 12″ top to bottom point
Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: Mar 19, 2012 20:12:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, PARIS, France
Comments: An interesting contrast with the previous piece. The rings seem almost the same. The Clones knots are well defined in the ground, and note the use of needlelace stitches in the center of the wheel motifs. Again, a simple but effective pattern. Condition looks very good from the photos. I think the combination of the fairly stiff motifs and soft ground gives these cuffs unusual flexibility, as noted by the seller.

http://tinyurl.com/6sz2dd2 Lovely Vintage IRISH Crochet LACE COLLAR
Size:  14″ x 12″ tip to tip. Width ~4.25″
Starting Price: $15.00
Auction ends: Mar 19, 2012 22:03:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller didas-stuff, USA, United States
Comments: I think the piece has been photographed upside down.
In “The Lacemakers” by Susannah Meredith (1865) there is a great quote from an Irish lacemaker:
“I likes the crochet best, ma’am, because there’s hope in it. I may get every so much for what I makes, if I happen to hit on a new stitch…”
I’m wondering if the innovative filling in this piece is an example of one of those new stitches.  This is an excellent piece in very good condition.

   Sold for $25.00, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: 25.00 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 20, 2012 08:13:26 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A cream colored silk Maltese mantilla with an oval center and tapered lappet ends.  Seller cites one long brown mark and one small split, otherwise good condition.  I wish there were a photo of the piece laid out flat. The work looks well done and follows a basic mantilla pattern of a grid of rosettes in the center, with an edging of Maltese crosses.

Sold for 87.55 GBP, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Mar 20, 2012 17:45:40 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller floramaven, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: By now you probably know my fondness for the under appreciated Mexican Drawnwork pieces, and this is a good example.  I’ve collected several videos on the LaceNews YouTube channel showing women making this work, and they are well worth a look. The stitches in this piece are excellent, and the hemming quite high quality. Aside from one pencil mark overall condition is very good.

   Sold for $59.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7gk85py Antique Bucks handmade lace lovely hat veil 1800’s
Size:  56″ long, x 22.5″ wide at center, 27″ at sides
Starting Price: 39.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 21, 2012 09:30:40 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: An assembled piece.  The outer and inner borders are Bucks, attached on all edges to a machine made base.  The double border is unusual for a hat veil. Not entirely sure what to make of this – almost would look better as an apron.  Seller cites a few small pulls and age marks, but overall good condition.

Starting Price: 14.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 21, 2012 09:33:36 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: This is very similar to a piece described in the March 11, 2012 Alerts, #290680462554, but it is not the same one.The shamrock, flower and ‘snowflake’ motifs are done with effective openwork stitches.  A few loose threads, particularly along the neck edge, but overall good condition.

http://tinyurl.com/7xog6uv Fine Antique Hand Knitted Lace Shetland Shawl
Size:  62″ x 56″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 21, 2012 13:02:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll take the Shetland attribution at face value. I am impressed by the single ply wool, 3.5 ounces in total. I’ll admit I don’t understand how the pattern is put together with all those rectangles, but the work looks very impressive. Seller cites a few repairs and occasional tiny hole.

Sold for 54.09 GBP, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/6pwyko6 VICTORIAN LARGE MALTESE CREAM SILK LACE COLLAR
Size:  max width 29.5″, max depth 28″
Starting Price: 69.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 22, 2012 03:55:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kimsucadi, Wokingham, Berkshire, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting Maltese collar with round points of Maltese crosses around the outside edge. There are 4 concentric layers of bobbinlace to this collar, and I’m not sure they all go together very well. But the work is nicely done with good Guipure work, and it’s an unusual variation on a deep collar. Seller cites a small repair to one edge and some slight discoloration.

http://tinyurl.com/7uu3ojy Antique Handmade Lace Wedding Fan-Point de Gaze
Size:  11″ long
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 22, 2012 13:00:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: The Point de Gaze lace on this fan has been lined with a machine net, which probably accounts for its excellent survival.  Just a few small spots that I can see. Multi-layered raised rose petals, varied and interesting fillings. It’s an impressive piece. Some damage to the bone sticks (which are plain, but nicely shaped).

Sold for 215.00 GBP, 13 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/88oxmwk Antique Brussels Duchesse Lace Collar / Lappet & Cuffs
Size:  24″ inside edge when folded in half, 5″ widest.  Cuffs, 10″ x 3″
Starting Price: $19.99
Auction ends: Mar 22, 2012 18:45:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller annacottage, Connecticut, United States
Comments: The ‘cuffs’ don’t seem to match the main collar, and might be cut from a border. The main interest is the narrow shawl collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles. The motifs are a little conventional, the needlelace flat, but condition looks good. Maybe a little wrinkled with a few stains.

   Sold for $138.50, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/7jdo8fs ANTIQUE LACE FABULOUS HANDMADE POINT D’ANGLETERRE LACE FAN CARVED MOP STICKS
Size: 22.75″ wide, 12″ deep.  Lace is 6.5″ wide
Starting Price: $9.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Mar 23, 2012 15:05:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: An outstanding 19th century Point d’Angleterre fan. The bobbinlace motifs are delicate without fussy ornamentation, and the Point de Gaze mesh is pure cobweb. One of the best Belgian laces.  I’m not all the happy with the colored fan sticks, but they aren’t bad. Condition of the lace looks very good; seller cites one stain.

   Sold for $425.00, 7 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/786ae23 ANTIQUE LACE INTERESTING HANDMADE VALENCIENNES LAPPETS BUTTERFLIES ROUND RESEAU
Size: 20.5″ long, 3.25″ wide at top, 2.5″ wide at bottom
Starting Price: $25.99 with reserve
Auction ends: Mar 24, 2012 10:22:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: Round hole mid 18th c Valenciennes is one of my favorites, and this is an interesting set of lappets.  The motifs don’t have quite the definitive line-drawing effect that you often find in this lace, maybe a bit clumsy design. But normally people are surprised at how light and delicate a lace like this is. I’m a bit concerned at the length, 20″ isn’t very long for a set like this, and you can see some cutting at the tops.  The condition of this set is as good as you will find, with just one small hole.

   Sold for $392.55, 3 bidders.
