Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief.  Some staining to the center cloth, and a few small holes in the needlelace ground, but overall good condition. The rose petals in the lace do not appear to be raised.  Two different ‘jour’ fillings, nicely done.

Comments: A good, basic Bruges-looking collar.  I put this up because the seller brings up Irish bobbinlace. Patricia Wardle in “Victorian Lace” summarizes what is known about Irish bobbinlace – there was a small 18th c industry, with a revival in mid 19th c. The Dublin Normal Lace School copied Bucks lace in silk and cotton. Some imitations of Brussels application was made at the Convent of Mercy at Parsonstown and in Limerick. Some Valenciennes was produced in Limerick and the Belfast Industrial School. Some Torchon and colored Russian laces were also produced. All of these were minor efforts.  But most bobbinlace was an imitation Honiton, not high quality. It was produced at the Industrial School of the Convent of Mercy in Dublin, the Belfast Industrial School, the Convent of Mercy , Kinsale, and by Misses Digges Latouche of Killmaule. These were done around 1840-1850, in the later 19th c, Irish Honiton was limited to Birr and Parsonstown. I haven’t been able to find any photos of representative pieces.
Without more data on ‘Irish Honiton’, I hesitate to attribute this to Ireland, even with the trefoil motifs. It has a lot of similarity to Bruges, which for the moment is my preference.

Comments: A Point de Paris mat made in Turnhout, Belgium. It must have been part of a set at one time, but the piece stands well by itself. No human or animal figures in the design, just nicely done foliage.  Condition appears very good, seller cites minor age spots.

   Sold for $57.00, made offer.

Offered by: Ebay seller laceplace1, Wallingford, Connecticut, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. I’m quite struck at how the Point de Gaze flowers seem to float within the bobbinlace borders. It seems to be because the needlelace is used over such a large area – usually it is confined to much smaller cartouches. And look at the little sprigs coming off the ovals at the corners of the center cloth – so realistic. All very effective use of traditional design elements.  The needlelace is basically flat, but there’s good raised work on the bobbinlace. Photos really aren’t detailed enough to look at condition closely, but it seems in very good shape.

   Sold for $373.68, 4 bidders.

Comments: A bobbinlace application on machine net – Honiton applique is certainly an option, although it doesn’t really have that spiral feel you see in many Honiton flowers. There are some woven tally fillings, and no raised edges on the motifs – it’s all just thick gimp. The design seems fine from a distance, but closeup it’s a little rough. Not sure what to make of this. I do like the way one end that I can see seems complete. Overall good condition, just a few stains and minor holes in the net.

   Sold for $294.99, 7 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller adtjmd, RED VELVET BENCH, United States
Comments: A Maltese collar with some nice guipure work just inside the neckline.  It’s hard to say if this is silk or cotton – it doesn’t seem to have the shin of silk. But that might be a trick of the light. The technique is quite nice, good use of traditional design elements. Condition from what I can see looks very good.

Sold for 48.30 GBP, 5 bidders.

Comments: A fine Irish Youghal handkerchief – title has been corrected in the text. OK, I’ve been talking to this seller. She is selling the collection of her aunt, and I’ve seen some of the pieces not yet listed – very high quality. This is a lovely Youghal piece -note the sprigs even in the center handkerchief cloth. Lots of interesting fillings. Condition looks unused.

Sold for 122.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Comments: An Irish Crochet handkerchief. Normally IC is too heavily worked for such a fine piece, but everything seems to have been scaled down for this one. A little raised work in some flowers, and a picoted bride ground. Looks in very good condition.

Comments: A good Honiton applique on machine net.  Most of the work has gone into the corner sprays of flowers, which are nicely executed. The rest of the motifs are a bit snails/slugs, and the design is a bit scattered. But overall it’s quite a good example, and the condition looks basically unused.
