Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, ID, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. The bobbinlace is well done with raised work on halfstitch background. I especially like the masses of small 5-petal flowers. Needlelace inserts seem to have raised petal roses, a bit hard to tell. The design is rather crowded, but I like the density; quite effective. Overall very good condition, seller cites only trivial blemishes.

Size: 48″ x 3.5″
Starting Price: $145.00

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: The bobbinlace of these mid 18th c lappets looks like original design has been preserved, but the motifs have been appliqued onto a new ground (at least I think it’s applique). It’s difficult to tell how the new ground was made – might be machine. Not sure. It’s a well done substitution, but still is a major modification. The original work is Belgian, nicely done with some interesting fillings especially at the ends. The join in the center is also a modification, but looks pretty seamless. Overall good condition.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: I’d call it Honiton Point, with what looks like a needlelace ground. One could argue a Brussels lace, but it just doesn’t have the right design feel for Belgium. And the inner edge, which has a looped design that is seen in Honiton. If English, then it’s definitely a higher quality product, with well worked small motifs. It has a nice English flower garden scattered feel, in very good condition. I can’t see anything wrong from the photos.

   Sold for $71.00, 2 bidders.

Comments: I think it’s a fan leaf. Note the single row at the left edge, which overlays the guard stick. The lace has the bridework often associated with Bruges. There’s a needlelace grounded bobbin motif in the center , with smaller efforts at the sides – unusual. Overall it’s a pretty bold design, but the condition is rather off. Some holes in the needlelace ground, and lots of broken brides.  An interesting piece.

   Sold for $45.00, 1 bidder.

Comments: An early 18th c Flemish lace, similar to contemporary work from Milan. I think this is Flemish because of the finer thread and the simple brides and outer edges. Nice holes and divisions in the clothwork, and some interesting fillings. The piece appears intact and in very good condition.  Nice technical work.

   Sold for $338.00, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: A good Brabant bobbinlace, 2nd quarter 17th c. This is basically a lace made in Belgium, but outside the more refined lacemaking centers in Brussels and Ghent. It can be very good, but more often has a slightly unsophisticated design, but often lots of yardage. Note the combination bride and plaited mesh ground, typical of this lace. The condition of this piece is good, several frayed areas and repairs shown in the photos, but not bad considering the age.

   Sold for $395.00, 6 bidders.

Comments: This piece is a nice complement to the previous Brabant piece. Same general idea, but over 200 years later. It looks like a Bruges piece, although the center ‘M/flower’ motif is more in the style of Ghent Valenciennes de Gand.  Seller notes two small openings, and I think I see a few pinholes in the square mesh. But overall very good condition.

Comments: This looks like bobbbinlace application on droschel ground, probably before 1830. The handmade net is made in strips, and you can see some of the joining lines especially in the last photo. The droschel net is wonderful and drapes beautifully – even the best machine net can’t compare. The bobbinlace motifs are nicely done, and note all the sprigs in the ground. Normally these bonnet veils have a wide border along one edge, and a narrower border along the remaining two, sometimes three sides. They don’t come up for sale that often. This piece does have a lot of small holes and repairs, but there isn’t a complete photo, and it doesn’t look in that bad condition.  It is well worth just feeling a wonderful piece like this.

   Sold for $116.00, 4 bidders.

Comments: A good Brussels Duchesse bertha with double layer petals on the Point de Gaze roses.  It has a good, cohesive design, and looks in very good condition. I do wonder if the neck edge is maybe cut down, it doesn’t seem as nicely finished as the outer edge. Most berthas like this have a straight neck edge in the form of a little ring of buds for easy attachment to a gown.

Comments: A long length of Alençon that appears to be in very good condition despite a few small holes and stains. It has the light appearance of late 18th very early 19th c work.  At 3″ wide, this piece is a lot finer than it looks in the photos.

$81.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller valeu7reuxlidjwes, Liège, Belgium
Comments: Not sure why this bobbin winder is labeled as coming from Le Puy. I tend to think of these upright ones as English or Belgian. They are a lot of fun, both as works of art, and in attempting to get them to work properly. This one isn’t as fall as some I’ve seen, but it does not look like a modern copy. I have a similar one with a straight peg instead of a disc as the lower key, and with a wooden extension on the handle.  Looks in very good shape.

Size: 12″ square
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2012 11:06:00 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with an unusual cross shaped center. Note the inked name. The lace is quite good, a little snails/slugs, but with some nice refinement. Condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Seller cites a few small repairs.

Sold for 33.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Comments: Two lappets of Mechlin with early fond de neige and five-hole grounds, around 1730. Beautiful designs and workmanship. The condition also looks excellent, although I will gripe slightly about them being cut through the design at the tops. These are rare pieces.

   Sold for $1,200.00, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/76wh6aw ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 1745 POINTE DE VENISE A RESEAU
Size: ~2″ x 43″
Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2012 17:40:40 PDT
Offered by: Maria Niforos, Ebay seller mithya, London-New York, United States
Comments: The name Point de Venise a Reseau should never be used in connection with a piece like this. Point à l’Aiguille Belge is the preferred name. This lace never came near Italy. It is Belgian needlelace, and when well done (this is a fair example) some of the finest lace ever made. It has the same ‘line drawing’ effect as contemporary Valenciennes. This piece has some damage to the reseau, but overall is in good condition.

   Sold for $95.00, 1 bidder.
