Comments: 19th-20th c Point d’Angleterre always seems to have beautifully done bobbin motifs on an equally well done point de gaze ground.  Needlelace ‘modes’ or fillings are also typical, more or less extensive.  This is a good piece, the modes aren’t quite as exuberant as one often finds and the motifs are a bit large – but it has nice raised bobbin work and an interesting design. Almost reminds me of Gros Point with the large flower heads. Condition appears very good from the photos.

Comments: A Mechlin (I’ll assume Mechlin, closeups aren’t good enough to see the ground stitch) border. Could also be a Beveran or Lille piece.  I like the style, and it has a bit of an uneven texture, typical of older laces made of linen thread. Seem to be scattered weaknesses in the ground, part of that is just due to the uneven quality of the thread. Overall good condition, no major holes that I can see.

Comments: A later 18th century pair of Argentan lappets.  The photos aren’t close enough to tell if the brides are buttonholed or twisted.  This is a simple design, just one meandering trail down the center with sprigs in the ground a a little border with minimal fillings, and some réseau ordinare. I find it an effective pattern done quite nicely. One obvious hole and I can’t tell much about the joined area. Overall good condition.

Comments: A good, collectible border of Duchesse de Bruxelles; the design definitely above average. This is a high end market piece.  I like the work on the bobbinlace, especially the nice rose design. The point de gaze inserts are flat with some unusual rings forming an oval, and note how they go down all they way to the edge of the piece, mirroring the bobbinlace leaf designs. The needlelace design is a bit plain, but it is well designed to blend in perfectly with the lower part of the flounce. Very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

The colors are different and this one has brides worked in black, which gives it a more open appearance than the earlier one. It’s quite an instructive exercise to compare the two. Comments: A long crinoline flounce of Brussels application on machine net.  Note, Ebay item 160853660516 posts a shorter length of this same pattern.  It shows a good design, with well done motifs – note the openwork in the flowers for a little bit of shading effect.  Seller says some flowers are needle-made, but not enough closeup views to tell for sure. Some needlelace rings in the ribbon-like sections, and good esprits in the upper ground. As a work of art it isn’t quite as over the top as it could be, but the length is amazing. So is the condition, which counts for so much in these machine appliques. Seller does cite a few openings in the net at top, but I don’t see them in the photos.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with MOP sticks. Quite an interesting design in the lace with the drooping leaves along the top, with a little frill of flowers at the upper edge. The lace is flat with a few needlemade modes for a small amount of relief. Interesting.  Note the monogram on the guard stick, which also brings it up a notch in quality. I don’t see any break s in the lace, but it is quite stained.
