Comments: Chantilly lappet scarf, with a good, vertical design. Note the openwork flower elements, unusual. Some damage at the center join – hard to tell if this is just wear, or the failure of an actual seam. I’m thinking the former, but it is very localized. Given the overall quality and condition of the rest of the piece, I think this is minor.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief, slugs/snails period. The design is rather plain, but I do like the tulips in two corners. Can’t tell if the brides are needle-made. The work is actually quite tight, but condition, although no technical damage to the lace, seems a bit worn. Seller cites a few holes in the center cloth.

Comments: A Honiton bertha, nicely worked motifs although still a bit on the snails/slugs side. Not much. Nice rose and thistle design. Seller cites a poorly done repair, but I’m having trouble spotting it. Overall very good condition.

Comments: This is a lovely pattern that goes way back in the history of lacemaking – a modern interpretation here. Seller seems to have a religious provenance, but not much detail is given. The condition looks very good from the photos.

Comments: No dimensions given, but it looks like a fairly large shawl collar of silk Maltese. It’s a little hard to see on the blue background, but there are lots of well done leaf grounds, and some good guipure outside of the central Maltese cross. The condition looks very good, I can’t see anything wrong from the photos.

Comments: Keep an eye on this seller over the next few weeks – I was contacted and told that there will be some important pieces listed in the near future. As is already obvious by the quality of the lace fans listed in the past week. This carrickmacross fan also has a box and quite elegant sticks. The lace is a dense and complex guipure. The condition seems good for a fan; seller cites some light foxing and edge wear.

Comments: I’m a little bothered by this piece. It does have the look of Punto in Aria – the flatter kind that sometimes people think comes from Spain, but is perfectly good Italian. But look at the relief – it seems to be just one long wound cord sewn on the pattern with a tacking stitch every once in a while (sort of like what they sometimes did with Miracourt bobbinlace guipure). And look at the backside photo – there’s a lot of woven tape formed into the motifs. I think this is a later 19th c piece, using woven tape with a few needlelace fillings, then the cord was attached as relief later. The brides don’t look particularly old, and normally one expects loops on the lower border, not single picots. I wouldn’t call it old Mezzo Punto, it just doesn’t look up to the quality of the older stuff. Plus, it is very, very long, which would be a remarkable survival. Condition appears very good, which is another unusual thing for a very old piece.

Comments: A good example of the 18th century ‘flat grounded’ needlelace, the best ones were made in Belgium (where even today they are erroneously called ‘point de Venise à Reseau – a term that never in fact existed at the time these were made), or Italian Burano. This has the less sophisticated look of Burano, but these laces were probably also made elsewhere. The pattern looks consistent with a sleeve ruffle – it might have been cut down at the ends, but hard to tell from the photos. It has two joins and some damage at the top, although I’m having a hard time spotting these. I think it looks quite nice.

Comments: A collar of ñanduti, and the seller says it is silk. Might be – it does seem to have a certain sheen. It has the complexity of an older piece, but not the really fine thread of the best ones. So it might not be too old. The condition looks very good, and the roundels are varied and interesting.

Comments: A large doily of ñanduti, same seller as before. I can’t tell anything about this being silk from the photos. It is a more complex piece than the collar with good complex backgrounds. Condition looks very good. Seller is also listing more of this lace, for example #190715309917.
