Comments: I’m really getting interested in the Northern Italian and Abruzzi laces lately. This is a Milanese-type sculpted tape lace with additional plaited ground, certainly reminiscent of early Milan work. Date I think is probably later – the pattern is a bit simplistic, although nicely done, and the lower edge just doesn’t say early Milanese to me. Condition looks very good from what I can see in the photos.

Comments: I wish there was one complete photo of this pillow, no cover cloth. Without dimensions you have to scale what is given to the size of the bobbins. It is a Miracourt pillow, and note the metal rings on 20 of the bobbins. These hardly ever come up for sale, I’ve seen 2 in the past 10 years. It does appear to be a small one, usually they are much larger. I’m attaching a postcard to show a more typical pillow. Condition is hard to say from the photos, but I’d call it good. (I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I only have two condition classes in these reviews, good or very good.  Anything beyond this is explained separately).

Comments: It’s rather mixed up. Probably three Duchesse lengths pieced together and note the Cluny insertion around the center. The lace is quite nice, good bobbin and needle elements. Overall the reassembled pattern seems a bit of a mess.  Good condition, seller notes some loose brides and small stains, minor.

Comments: A fairly wide border of Irish Crochet, good collectible length. Tightly worked motifs arranged in quatrefoils of several flower types, trefoils along the bottom edge. Photos aren’t close enough to tell if there are Clones knots in the ground. Note the raised work in the center of the motifs. Overall condition is very good.

Comments: A Honiton point lace collar and cuff set. I think the ground might be needlemade, but photos aren’t close enough to tell. This is a nice set, first to have survived, and second with such a good design. It does tend toward snails/slugs, but overall the effect is pleasing, and the work well done. Comments: Hmmm.  Bucks? Maybe – looks a bit more like Lille to me with the rather spiky design. There are definitely some interesting fillings. You do see large Lille or Arras pieces like this from time to time. Finished on all ends? Definitely the lower border, maybe the two ends (no close photos), but the top has been cut straight through the mesh.  Other than the cut top condition looks very good.

Comments: The technical work on this Gros Point piece is really beautiful. Look at all the variations in clothwork, and the heavily ornamented brides and relief. Large sections of the design seem intact, although I’d say there has been some re-assemblage. But probably all from the same piece.  The condition is very good for a piece of this age.

Comments: A high-end wide and very long Mechlin border, later 19th c. It has a curious combination of Mechlin and point grounds, although the point is more of a filling. And note the extensive use of woven tallies in the fillings.  The design is dense and complex, yet it appears very light.  Condition is very good, seller cites a few small ‘tanning’ marks and one tiny break at the top, all very minor.

Comments: Lappet scarf of Duchesse de Bruxelles, with a flat needlelace insert at each end. The designs in the oval cartouches as you go up the lappets are quite naturalistic and well done.  A bit wrinkled in places, and I see a little staining at the end of one lappet in the photo – but overall very good condition.

Comments: Looks like a crinoline flounce of Belgian bobbinlace application on machine net. I can’t tell what they’ve done to the ends, photos not close enough, but it seems motified for a narrow shawl. Note the larger circular esprits in the ground. Needlelace is confined to a few simple rings at the center of flowers. Condition looks a bit wrinkled but the net looks intact from what I can see from the photos.
