Comments: It’s a bit large for a handkerchief, so perhaps some kind of table covering? Good Maltese design, well-done guipure, and some interesting ground work. It has three widths of lace sewn together, and from the photos I think there might be a little color difference in the different rounds. It also might be linen or cotton, I don’t see the silk sheen in the photos – but that’s hard to tell. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Comments: Two lengths of the same Alençon pattern, later 19th c romantic floral design. Réseau ordinaire (fin) ground, good modes and fillings, along with the lighter rempli typical of later 19th c Alençon technique. The brodes are both plain and picoted, with horsehair left in. The condition appears very good from the photos. A nice example, just wish it hadn’t been cut in half.

Comments: I don’t know quite what to say about this piece. There’s only one photo, so hard to tell if it is handmade or not. It might be one of those indeterminate guipures associated with Almagro in Spain or perhaps some work much father east. I don’t much like the structure of the ‘halfstitch from what I can see. A few closeups could solve this immediately, but in the meantime I thought it was interesting, and maybe someone recognizes it.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles collar, raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Typical 2nd half 19th century design, middle market. The condition appears very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: We must distinguish between the old Duchy of Brabant which contained the great lacemaking centers of Brussels, Mechlin, and Antwerp, with the ‘Brabant’ designation today given to certain coarser Belgian pieced bobbin laces. The latter is more a dealer’s term rather tan a true indication that a lace originated in the Brabant area. It is generally held to be a lace with large motifs with extensive bride and a coarse mesh. This one has no brides, and the mesh is an early plaited variation – not strictly the Brabant ‘definition’, but probably close enough. It is unusually long (but not so much for Brabant), and a bit narrow compared to other examples. I think the design is largely intact, however I’m not too sure about the upper edge. Condition looks good, but there aren’t enough photos to say definitively about the entire length.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net – just a few simple needlelace fillings. The net seems to be in very good shape – unusual. The designs are not particularly sophisticated, but there are a few sprigs in the upper net. A good middle-market product.

Comments: An unusual matching set of Duchesse, I won’t speculate on the use of these pieces, but I’m thinking it might be a Brugges work. Note the work at the intersections of the brides which is often seen in Bruges. And the technique is very good. It almost has an Art Nouveau feel. Seller has given quite a lot of detail on condition, very minor defects – overall very good condition.

Comments: A narrow border of Brussels bobbinlace with brides, quite beautiful. One seam and one replacement, seller does not specify where along the length these occur. Still, there is enough of the repeat intact to make this an exceptional piece. Condition also appears very good.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha with raised petal rose point de gaze inserts. It’s a fairly standard design, but what gives it a special feel are the inserts of needlelace modes arranged in large areas of ring and dot chains. Seller says the piece has been washed in the past, but condition is very good with only a few loose brides.
