Comments: Forget the strange little engrelure which was added later. This is a Flemish bobbinlace with brides, 2nd quarter 18th century. It has that kind of overdone Brabant look, but the work itself is quite fine, and it has some interesting snowflake variation fillings. Condition looks good, a little fraying here and there and some holes in the clothwork, more like general wear, probably not made any better by an old washing. You can also see some yellow spots in the photos. A nice piece, good length, and the design looks intact.
Sold for 31.01 GBP, 4 bidders.

Comments: A Bruges handkerchief in very good condition. Nice bold motifs, well executed. This isn’t a particularly sophisticated lace, but the design of this piece makes a good bold statement.

Comments: This is a later 19th century Belgian piece which was commercially often known as ‘Point de Milan’. It can be good quality (like this piece), or pretty bad, and there’s a lot of the bad stuff around. Here the bobbinlace motifs are crisp and well made, note the good raised work. Note the needlelace mesh which is basically used as a fillings. Nice picoted brides. Overall condition looks very good – I can spot a few small holes in the photos, but nothing serious.

Offered by: Ebay seller sunnisouth, Dorchester, Dorset, United Kingdom
Comments: It does look like a Honiton applique on machine net. The motifs are a larger than one finds in Brussels lace, and note the tally fillings along the edge. A few tiny holes in the net, particularly at the ends, but generally in good condition.

Comments: 19th c lappet scarf of Point de Gaze, probably 3rd quarter. Excellent condition and design. All you can see are a few yellow spots here and there. This is a flat piece, no raised petals, and points to a superior manufacturer. Note the extensive fine ‘mode’ fillings. Also note the ‘sitck-like’ picots along the edge, also a specific manufacturer mark, although we don’t know who it was. This is a really beautiful piece.

Comments: It’s been a while since we’ve seen a really good, wide Point de Gaze flounce. Raised petal roses, good mode fillings and naturalistic design, rather densely packed. The condition looks very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos. Seller cites some minor openings ‘near edge’, not quite sure what that means.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Only a few needlelace rings used as fillings in some flowers. It’s a long piece, with an extraneous tulle piece attached at the top which probably could be easily removed. The design is rather middle-market. Seller says it has three joins and some staining, I also see at least one minor hole in the net in the photos. Basically good condition.

Comments: A later 19th c Alençon border with réseau fin. Some, but not many decorative modes, and a little rempli variation used as fillings on the lower edge. The clothwork rempli is sold and well worked with the open twisted stitch, but little shading. Good naturalistic design and well done brode, plain and picoted. Seller cites a few tiny openings which I can’t spot from the photos, overall very good condition.

Comments: Looks like a Burano piece to me, imitation of Point d’Alençon. It’s much too tightly worked for a Brussels piece, and although I can’t see the fine detail, the brode looks overcast in place, not buttonholed. It also has a good strong needlelace mesh (not bobbinmade droschel), and a very solid pattern. Condition looks very good, I can’t spot any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. No raised petals or elaborate modes in the Point de Gaze, but I like the pansy design. Altogether quite a nice effect. Seller cites a little spotting, nothing major, overall very good condition.

Comments: An interesting Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with elaborate needlelace medallions. The bobbinlace motifs are small and neatly done, while the ne3edlelace concentrates on a design of ring fillings. Seller cites some holes near the ends, with some pinholes in the main part of the lace. An unusual piece.

Comments: A wide Maltese collar with some excellent guipure work. It seems to be an exercise in matching patterns in the inner section, since the part with the end flowers is made of two lengths all around the collar. Nicely done. Condition looks very good from what I can see in the photos – I don’t see any obvious defects.

Comments: A small Maltese scalloped edge collar that relies on some simple design elements – woven leaf lattice ground, one Maltese cross, and a simple plaited edge. I put this one up because of a conversation I was having with Jeri Ames the other day – can we actually find Maltese pieces that are not composed of matched strips sewn together? I think this is a candidate. Condition looks good, maybe a little wrinkled in places. Nice contrast to the previous piece.

Comments: Yet another Maltese collar, different from the last two examples. This one has good guipure, combined with a more open, almost spidery ground. Note the use woven leaves as veins in the leaves of the flower at the back inside edge. This technique gives it a light appearance. Seller notes some fraying, odd broken bride and age discoloration, but generally good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Paris – Palm Beach, United States
Comments: A Mechlin edging with a straight lower edge – you see this kind of design in certain Lille patterns also. The design has a simple border and large buds arranged in the upper ground – it is meant to be ruffled. Very good condition, the lace is nicely intact, no pulls that I can see. Seller cites a few light age stains. The picots on the lower edge are quite prominent, and at first I thought it might be a machine edge sewn onto an earlier piece (common practice in the 19th c), but on closer examination you can see that it is part of the original lace.

Comments: This looks like it was originally one collar, but got cut at the back at some point, probably to accommodate a dress opening in back. Duchesse de Bruxelles, with the needlelace confined to a row of roses along the neck edge. Quite nicely done too, with a double layer of raised petals. Good raised work on the bobbinlace – definitely an upper market piece. A few spots, and other than the separation, looks in very good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan leaf with rather large bobbin motifs and a big Point de Gaze insert in the center. A bit hard to tell, but it looks in very good condition, probably because of the protection of the frame.

Comments: A banquet tablecloth. I think it’s a bobbin-made tape lace, although the tape is a bit rushed. Extensive bobbinlace fillings, and also some needlelace grounds. At first I thought it was Italian because the ends of some of the tapes are almost curling like Cantu, but then if they would put the time into a piece like this, why not do the Cantu hook formally? Now I think it’s probably a Belgian piece, because of the combination of tape lace and needle ground, also the bobbinlace coarse droschel-like ground in places. Like what they used to call Point de Milan. Condition looks good – seller notes a few spots and some broken brides, not serious. I think there might be some figural work, horses heads? in the corners.

Comments: An Irish Crochet neckpiece and dress front, matching designs. Fairly large motifs tightly worked. The symmetry is a little off, but I like the massing of the large flowers and leaves along the bottom, with a more geometrical mesh and smaller motifs on top. Note the multilayered flowers. Overall very good condition, seller cites age discoloration and rare broken bride, some soiling where hooks once were.

Comments: An Irish Crochet insertion. Motifs have some raised rings, and a rectangular picoted mesh. Seller says it matches a recently listed collar, but I can’t find a really obvious resemblance. See the next review. Overall condition looks very good from the photos, no obvious damage.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with what look like Clones Knots decorating the loops along the edges. The motifs are formed of narrow ‘tapes’ with the crochet done mainly in two layers on a base thread; these are twisted around into various patterns. A little raised work, and roughly hexagonal picoted brides. Looks in very good condition.

Comments: A Duchesse collar, all bobbinlace. Note the little frill added separately along the neck edge. A collection of fairly standard motifs, but nicely arranged, and with some good raised work. Condition appears very good, seller cites only one ‘slipped’ thread.
