Comments: You see mother of pearl sticks like this a lot on fans, but seldom with a lace of t his quality. It is the highest quality of Belgian ‘Point de Gaze’ type, almost over into the more Zele fine Venise types. The clothwork is almost a little too solid for standard Point de Gaze. Very naturalistic flowers, no raised petals, some raised rings for relief, and interesting mode fillings. I see a few pinholes in the mesh of the lace, seller cites a few spots and one brake in a slip of one of the ribs (trying to use proper fan terminology here, see http://tinyurl.com/7ergzp3).

Comments: These metallic laces are typically simple designs as you often see in this kind of lace – it’s a clumsy thread to work with and you don’t need a lot of fancy technique to compete with the glitter. France or Spain, who knows, probably more toward France.  I like the last one the best. Doesn’t come up for sale very often.  All look in good condition, a little frayed along edges in a few areas.

Comments: This isn’t the first piece of this lace to come up for sale recently; I bought a slightly, but not much shorter piece from a different seller about 2 years ago.  It appears to be made all in one piece – I can’t find any racroc stitches.  For your information, I also show a photo I took at about 25x magnification of my piece showing the ground, some of the ombre shading, and the cordonnet, which appears to be a bundle of about 4 threads. A design this good with such fine work is probably French.  Condition is very good, seller notes a small hole and a few rough spots at the top.

Comments: A blonde silk Maltese shawl with a large central roundel (a bit overpowering) and two smaller ones in the upper ends of the triangle. This is a typical arrangement. This shawl is interesting because of the large spaces devoted to the plaited leaf ground; usually these areas are more filled with decoration.   It is a little less ‘layered’ with  narrow strips of lace than other examples. Good, extensive guipure work against the plaited ground, nicely done. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Comments: I’m not entirely convinced this is Honiton, although it certainly is possible. Has more of a Bruges look to me. Honiton, even in its strongest snail/slugs incarnation has a lot of tally fillings, that’s not the case here. And note the ‘islands’ at the intersection of the brides, that’s a Bruge characteristic. And the overall motif design isn’t really Honiton. But not really Bruges either – I’m puzzled on this one. Condition looks very good from the photos.

Comments: What a curious piece.  The fan sticks are amazingly carved, and seller is probably accurate in saying that the base is 18th c.  The Honiton lace was added later and seems complete. I wonder if it was made specially for t his fan since it is a little odd in shape.  Well worked motifs of a more sophisticated design. There is some damage to the sticks, but the lace looks intact although perhaps a bit discolored.
