Comments: An ~4″ wide border of Alençon with a design typical of the later 19th century.  Probably the brides tortillée above, réseau fin below. There are a few modes of various patterns, some picoted rings. The twisted rempli is typical of this period. One end looks like the original start or end point, can’t see the other end. The condition looks very good from what I can see in the photos.

Comments: I’d say it’s more a square shawl, Honiton applique on machine net. It gets lots of points for excellent condition, and the tulle net looks wonderful with a great drape. The motifs are a bit larger and the tulle a little whiter and heavier than contemporary Brussels work, also note the tally fillings in the motifs.  It is a little more advanced than snails/slugs era, but not too much.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan leaf with a nice off-center Point de Gaze insert (no raised rose petals). The Duchesse has a rather wild spray of motifs which I find charming.  A little wrinkled, but it doesn’t look like it’s ever been mounted.  I see a few minor broken spots here and there, nothing major. Overall good condition.

Comments: A Maltese rectangular piece, might be a shawl.  Three roundels with the Maltese cross in the center, guipure and woven leaf ground, and a simple geometric pattern on the outside.  Nicely made, in good condition, but I don’t find the design all that inspiring. It’s just a little off-normal for Maltese.

Comments: Probably a Bruges bloemwerk collar, although the filling detail is a bit unusual. It could almost go over into the Italian tape lace tradition, but not quite. Double picoted brides form the ground, and overall it has a nice bold look.  Condition seems very good, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A Chantilly fan with pierced ebony sticks retailed from Tiffany’s. The condition is excellent – not the lace has been backed by some white material, probably silk which is a good protection. Good figural Chantilly doesn’t come up that often. Note the interesting little circles above the putti, not sure how those were made. Might be an embroidery – unusual.
