Comments: A good almost complete Honiton setup (lacking a needlepin and sundry accessories). The pillow and pattern look modern, but can’t tell from the photos. Bobbins range in age with some aqua fortis decoration. Unusual to find a set this complete, and it all looks in very good condition, very usable.

Comments: Laces with this kind of vermicular looped tape are found in several places – a poorly documented early Flemish, Russian Yelts, and various Eastern European sites. Very difficult to attribute a specific place. What distinguishes this piece are the large abstract flowers and leaves which use the looped tape as a ground. There also seems to be a central symmetry to the repeat (assuming the design repeats regularly). I’m guessing Russian, but it’s a fairly wild guess. The Eastern European examples usually don’t attempt this kind of complexity, and the early Flemish are on a smaller scale and play more with the tape. Condition is a little short of good, frayed upper and lower edges, with some small holes, and with 3 seams. It’s an unusual piece.

Comments: A Carrickmacross applique handkerchief. I think it’s pretty recent; I’ve seen things like this for sale in stores that sell Irish linens, although not so much recently. Very true to the tradition, but simplified, and the motifs are well done and quite crisp. Very good condition, aside from 2 small brown spots you can see in the second photo.

Comments: A little triangle of Rosaline Perle, nicely worked and in very good condition. It has all the elements, the fine motifs with raised work and looped edges, a little interior filling stitches, and the perls which look needle made. Along with the original outside edge, which helps us understand how the makers of this lace thought about finishing.

Comments: Smaller shaped pieces of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net don’t come up too often. The technique lent itself more toward large borders and shawls. The design is not too sophisticated, but makes good use of the space. A few small holes in the headpiece where it was attached to a veil. Overall good condition. Seller indicates it has been washed, when I don’t know, but it looks like a good job.

Comments: Another hard-to-identify item, and a Russian origin is not unreasonable. Note the plaited mesh, and the well done woven leaves, which are a little unusual. This item has been listed several times with no sale, but I think people should take a closer look. It appears to be in very good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchess frontpiece with very well done bobbin and needlelace. I think there are raised petals on the roses in the Point de Gaze inserts – a little hard to tell. The right upper end looks intact, but there may be some cutting to the left upper side. It doesn’t look quite finished. Other than that it looks in very good condition, maybe a few tiny holes.

Comments: Two pieces of Honiton guipure, which look like they have been cut from a narrow scarf or some other kind of headpiece. The work is snails/slugs period, but quite nicely done with tight weaving. And the bridework is unusual, not enough closeups to tell exactly what it is. Overall good condition, a few loose brides here and there – and there are those cut ends.

Comments: I find this an exciting piece. It is Flemish, and bears a lot of resemblance to figure 254 in Santina Levey’s “Lace, A History”. That is dated early 18th century, and I think this is a likely date. It has a light, feathery appearance with an overall symmetry typical of late 17th early 18th c works. Even though there is a picoted bride ground, there is extensive use of small flower heads as filling elements. You can also see the beginnings of raised borders around the edges of some elements. I wish there were a closeup photo of the backside to see if threads carry over behind the motifs – that is a sure sign of Flemish work. The condition appears very good – I see the occasional repair in the closeup photos, and seller cites a few loose brides. Nothing major. One thing you need to be careful about with a piece like this – has it been cut down from something larger along the top edge. Hard to tell here, I suggest writing to the seller for some closeup photos of the top border.

Comments: It’s unclear if the doilies, which are of a simpler pattern, actually go with the large Maltese square piece. 37″ square is a good size for a table cover, not something meant to be folded as a shawl. The large piece has a beautiful bold pattern, with the central star well scaled for the rest of the piece. There is some guipure in the center, but it mostly relies on patterns of woven leaves. I don’t see any serious condition issues in the photos, overall they look very good.

Comments: A Honiton collar with a matching cuff, which might be “Point” Honiton, with a needle-made mesh. No closeups to definitely tell. These are higher end market pieces, well beyond the snails/slugs stage. A few unfortunate holes so it’s a bit hard to rate the condition as good.

Comments: A large ñanduti doily of complex design. It has 3 concentric layers of roundels surrounding a large grid area, with gridwork between all the roundels. There seem to be two different ‘sol’ patterns in each of the three layers. The palm leaf outer edge is unfortunately a bit ragged in places, but the rest is in very good condition. Seller indicates that it has been washed. This is ñanduti at its finest.

Comments: This is a continuous bobbinlace, therefore can’t be Duchesse. It is something much rarer. The clothwork is all halfstitch, so I’m suggesting white Chantilly, likely a French product. There’s even some honeycomb stitch in the centers of the roses. Hard to tell from the photos if the thread is silk. Some people might suggest Bucks, but I think there’s just too much halfstitch – although the thread might be just a little heavy. There is unfortunate damage to one spot near the center back, but this kind of lace is so rare that I think it could be overlooked. The rest seems in very good condition.

Comments: In my last Alerts post I said I was going to pay more attention to embroidered nets, so here goes. This is a tambour piece where the chain stitch is used to applique another piece of tulle onto the machine net. The extra in the second layer is cut away, and a few needlerun filling stitches added to the base net. The pattern is complex and naturalistic. The base net suffers from a few medium sized holes, but that’s something you see in most all tulle-based pieces – and it is very hard to fix. Several bidders have already taken note of this piece.

Comments: I’m not skilled enough to identify all the needlerun embroideries on machine net – yet. Here the pattern is reminiscent of the Blonde de Caen veils, with one heavy border of separate flower sprays. The net drapes beautifully, and seems well intact. Seller sites trivial tiny pulls and a few faint age marks, so overall very good condition.

Comments: This is a very typical Belgian square pillow with wedge shaped base, meant for making long lengths. The overhang at the top would be supported by a separate adjustable stand. They were occasionally used in France, especially along border towns with Belgium, like Bailleul. The three drawers are typical, but this one does not have the extension piece that could fit either at the top or the bottom. Never mind the ragged blue cloth – the pillow is intact with the original canvas cover. The lacemaker would have chosen a colored cloth to back her work. The wood looks a bit dry, but overall it seems in very good condition, and quite usable. They are usually stuffed with wool, and making them was quite a cottage industry in Belgium.

Comments: Definitely one of the better Point de Gaze berthas to come along in quite a while. Note the multiple layered rose petals and good ornamental fillings. The shaped neckline border is also unusual, a little extra touch. The condition is very good – I don’t see any problems from the photos. Which in itself might indicate an origin more in the late 19th century, early 20th. The overall design seems just a little mechanical, but I’m nitpicking.
