Comments: It looks like Floral Bedfordshire, but the complete use of guipure with no winding trails is unusual. And the plaited edge is rather subdued. But I can’t spot any real indication that it isn’t Beds, and a well done variation at that. Condition looks very good from what I can see.

Comments: A small Point de Gaze collar, with some raised petal roses. Note the little ports in the raised petals, and also the linked picots around the outer edges. I think they are trying to copy Alençon with this technique. It’s a well made piece, but the design is a bit conventional, despite the more advanced technical indicators. Very good condition, seller cites one minor hole and a little spotting.

Comments: An unusual dress insert of Irish Crochet. This is a rather early pattern, although I don’t think the lace itself is early. I find the design quite effective; kind of like a Venetian coraline. I see one hole, not too bad, and a little wrinkled. Basically good condition. Actually I wonder if it isn’t some kind of jabot, given the scalloped edges – dress inserts usually have straight sides.

Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, with a few discrete needlelace fillings. It is very wide, and I’d label it a Crinoline Flounce if the design were better. I tend to reserve that term for wide appliques of outstanding design, but perhaps I’m nitpicking. The motifs are a bit large and a little loosely worked, and the esprits aren’t too densly scattered – more in keeping with the design. But it’s a good upper middle market product. And it gets lots of points for very good condition. Note the seller has another item, 200839062098, a christening dress which uses another piece of this lace.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels application on machine net – with a few rings of needlelace used as fillings. The design stands well when viewed as a whole. Seller cites two repairs (see the darning in the last photo) and I see a few pinholes in the net. The piece has a soft, muted look to it up close, perhaps the result of washing and ironing?

Comments: A handkerchief edging of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net, no cloth center. I don’t see any needle lace. A middle market piece, the net looks in good condition – 2 pinholes. Seller also cites a few pale orange marks.

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze border in a good collectible length. These laces can be some of the finest Belgian products, and this one is definitely a higher-end market piece. Nice work in the decorative fillings, especially in the oval cartouches. The design is quite naturalistic. Condition appears very good, although I think I see a little staining at the top in one place. Minor.

Comments: This is quite the menagerie. I think this is an Italian piece, maybe made around Venice. Yes, the Belgians did a little bobbinlace on this kind of scale, but not much, and it is poorly documented. I’ve been looking through books on this one, and what finally decided it for me was the figure of the merman with the split tail – that’s strong Italian maritime symbolism. And little details like the way the edge is treated, the form of the picots, the rather bunched up tape. I don’t see the ‘hook’ copies that Belgian ‘rococo’ is suppoed to promote. And some of the clothwork looks a bit strange, almost too regular, as if it were cut from another piece of cloth and edged. I don’t think it was, but it’s not a mark of Belgian work. Altogether a very interesting piece, in very good condition.

Comments: A Honiton frontpiece. A bit snails/slugs era, and the design is somewhat thrown together making it rather asymmetric. But if you looks closely, the work is evenly done with good tally fillings. I like the neck edge treatment. A few brown spots, and a broken bride here and there, basically good condition.

Comments: A Honiton Guipure border. At 3.25″ wide, the motifs are smaller than you might think. Snails/slugs, a bit loosely worked, and the design is a bit confused. Note the long reach of the bobbin-made brides tending toward a hexagonal mesh. A little frayed, not bad, and basically good condition.

Comments: I’m guessing Beds, with the flowers and veined leaves, and the little tallies. Although the motifs seem to have a gimp, which is odd. And if it’s linen, that’s not usual for Beds. Actually, it’s almost like a Dutch Lille without the ground. But I think I’ll go with Beds. Looks in very good condition, although I wonder if it’s big enough for a collar.

Comments: It does have an 18thc Milanese look, although nothing fancy. No decoration in in the tape, and just a plain star ground which conforms to the tape convolutions. The design is almost a pottenkant, but more resembles a l’Aquila tape lace, more widely spread. Condition isn’t great, the lower edge looks added later and there are lots of holes.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse dress insert. Some good raised work in the bobbinlace, and raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze insert. The bobbinlace seems a bit loosely worked. I don’t see any obvious condition issues from the photos, looks basically very good.

Comments: This is a heavier piece, I think it is Milanese. Like the previous one, it doesn’t have decorations in the tape, but it also has an asymmetric design. Closely plaited ground. The lower edge looks a little worn, and there are a few holes, but overall good condition.

Comments: A Point de France border. You can see the candelabra symmetry elements in the 2nd photo down. It is hard to date something like this – I do like the picots on some of the cordonnets and rings. The lower edge seems to have been sewn on later. There’s a good possibility this is a later 17th c piece, but I’d like a closer look first. Some of the buttonhole stitches look a bit elongated (ala Burano), and the rings look sewn on almost as an afterthought. And there is no edge relief to the smaller motifs. Still, it’s quite interesting. Seller cites some small holes, but overall good condition.

Comments: I got a shoutout on this one, although seller got my web address wrong… Italian polychrome bobbinlace is quite beautiful and fairly rare on the market. Much of it went to the US, so perhaps more will show up here in the future. I have not seen original sources with the motifs appliqued on machine net, so perhaps this piece has been modified. The edge of the net is rather frayed and some motifs overlap the edge. Then again it’s hard to tell if any brides have been cut off. Still an interesting piece.

Comments: 11/6/12 – this piece was posted very recently with a short auction time, so I’m adding it to the end of the 11/3/12 Alerts. Two wide flounces joined together to form some kind of cape, probably Brussels manufacture. There is a ground, but the photos aren’t close enough to tell exactly how it is made. It’s also a bit hard to tell how this was put together, and it’s hard to tell if the food edge is completely intact. I think there might be some raised edges in the motifs, but overall the work looks quite flat. It seems to be much better design than a typical Brabant, so I hesitate to put it in that class. There are a few small holes visible in the photos, but overall good condition. I think it could be disassembled and the individual flounces recovered. An impressive piece.
