Comments: The great majority of Maltese pieces are made up of smaller strips sized to the long cylindrical Maltese pillow. The strip piecing together is quite obvious here, and I think the various strip designs aren’t too well matched for the end effect. Individually the strips are interesting, with some unusual guipure patterns and an almost ‘snowflake’ ground (wish there were closeups of this). The condition looks good from what I can see in the photos – seller indicates it was recently laundered.

Comments: One of the most elaborate French bobbin winders I’ve seen. From the Haute Loire region, note the fine chip carving on the base, just what you look for in French Provincial antiques. It is a windmill type winder, unfortunately the vanes of the windmill are missing. Otherwise it looks intact. The piece is dated 1830, with the name of the maker, ‘Pier’ also engraved on the swing arm. For the age the condition has expected wear, but overall very good. Lots of interest in this piece.

Comments: A composite cover backed with blue silk. These come up occasionally, and attempt from someone to take older laces in a patchwork to create something new. Not the later Normandy lace patchwork; this is more an attempt to preserve some very old laces.This one has inserts from many laces, all basically Northern Italian Milanese, some Abruzzi pieces, and also some plaited that could have come from anywhere – one does look Genoese. Dating is probably late 17th early 18th c, although there do appear to be some modern pieces also. Condition is basically good, note several age stains. But I don’t see any tears or other damage.

Comments: Point de Paris works so well with table linens – it’s a heavier lace and the undecorated clothwork can match the actual textiles used beautifully. Figural work is very common, here I see some birds flanking a flowerpot – pottenkant variation. This set has 11 placemats and 1 table runner. The thread is quite fine here and the work is excellent. Unfortunate that one placemat is probably missing, amongst linen collectors small details like that tend to matter. The set looks in very good condition, basically unused.

Comments: A mounted ñanduti doily. It’s a small piece with good detail. Three roundel designs with a nicely done grid center. Note the characteristic large palm leaf motifs around the edge. Condition looks very good, no doubt the mounting helped. There’s an article pasted on the back of the frame with some fascinating information about Itaugua the major ñanduti center. I learned a lot in reading it.

Comments: A Spanish mundillo covered in purple velour with a pattern started and some tangled bobbins. See also 230878933915 for a similar item from this seller. This example has a nice flat working surface and a secondary pad at the top to support bobbins thrown backward, a little harder to find pieces like this. There’s a drawer at the back. The roller is stopped with a pin, probably not original.  Condition looks a little dirty, but in working condition. Sometimes the cloth comes detached, here it seems to be nailed down through the edging braid.

Comments: The tulle backing should come off this piece. It’s a Beds dress front with an interesting roundel pattern. I think the neckline is part of the pattern, but not exactly sure how the pattern fits in here. It’s an interesting piece, almost a stained glass rose window look. Condition looks very good, note the crisp plaited edge.

Comments: A deep Honiton collar with some unfortunate holes; condition is short of good. This could be repaired. The lace itself is a kind of combination of sophisticated roses and veined leaves, with more snail/slugs elements surrounding them.  The design is approximately symmetric, and very full, like an English garden. Comments: Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net. Some nice needlelace fillings in the flowers. It’s a more Art Nouveau design that you sometimes see in later application pieces. Nice tulips – but I do find the design in the ends a bit thin. But it is meant to be mounted as a fan, so that’s probably part of the intent. Seller cites some age marks, and I don’t see any damage to the net from the photos. Overall very good condition.

Comments: Not sure from the title and description if there’s a napkin missing or not. And I’ll take it on faith that it’s Zele – seller doesn’t offer documentation. The size is obviously impressive, and the condition is so good that it probably wasn’t used much, if at all. The design is a grapevine motif with some larger flowers, and I do like the ‘reticella’ bands that divide the various sections. I’m missing the figural work that would have really put this over the top. Technique is quite even and appropriate to the size of the piece.

Comments: An elaborate embroidered net in the form of an alb flounce and two cuffs. I think it’s tambour, but the photos aren’t close enough to really examine it. The design of flower masses connected by swags, and a deep lower border is quite romantic, no religious symbolism that I can see. Seller cites some old restorations and a few small holes, so basically good condition.  I’ve seen a number of these religious vestment pieces recently, mostly out of France and Belgium.

Comments: A Maltese oval mat, very good condition. Pay attention when you see Maltese with the plaited star ground (kat stitch/point de Paris, I don’t know the specific Maltese term). Usually indicates a better quality piece, with good guipure work. I like the use of the woven leaves defining the leaf veins.
