http://tinyurl.com/d8dqnhp very good beds maltese lace antique lappet with raised detail, goldy colour
Size: not given
Starting Price: 12.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 01:55:22 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A lappet scarf of a French Cluny or Miracourt bobbin lace.  Note the gimp around the guipure work, while other areas have no gimp. Good leaves raised above the half-stitch ground. The ‘star’ ground is used in the scarf band. Seller cites a ‘gold’ color and a few darker marks, but I don’t see any damage. Basically good condition.

Sold for 16.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: 15.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 02:29:09 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A long scarf of white silk Maltese lace. The design is a bit conventional, but quite effective. I like the roundels along the edge with the center stars and round petals. There seems to be an interesting ground down the center of the piece, but photos aren’t close enough to say how it is made. Overall condition looks very good from the two photos, seller notes some minor marks and splits.

Sold for 52.90 GBP, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/d8ytkbb Antique Victorian Cream Buckinghamshire Bucks Point Bobbin Lace Bonnet Veil 1850
Size: 18″ x 52.5″
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 06:23:24 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller madaboutfans, Cork, Ireland
Comments: A very interesting piece. It is a bonnet veil, rather long, and it could be Bucks. And the seller is from Ireland, close to the source of such material. I’m looking for signs of racroc stitch joining, but don’t see anything obvious – I think the horizontal lines are just fold marks.
Large point ground pieces like veils aren’t too common, and I’m leaning  toward Swiss Neuchâtel origin where they did do this kind of work. Neuchâtel doesn’t get nearly enough press as a point ground bobbinlace. I have two large Swiss shawls in my collection, and this piece appears very similar in style and technique (see an example Ebay 150695851199). The plain clothwork with looped borders is quite typical of Swiss work. The fillings are only honeycomb, which again is very typical of Neuchâtel.
There are two obvious small holes, and a few other minor ones. A few stain spots, but overall this looks in good condition.

Sold for 42.55 GBP, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/c45yem3 STUNNING ANTIQUE COGGESHALL TAMBOUR LACE WEDDING VEIL SHAWL SCARF
Size: 22″ x 102″
Starting Price: 160.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 30, 2012 12:33:13 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of tambour embroidery on machine net. I hesitate to attribute specifically any tambour work because it was done in so many places.  This is a particularly nice example, with a well defined spray of flowers at each end, and a dense border around all 4 edges.  I don’t see any condition problems from the photos – very good overall.

   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/d2a772k Lovely Antique Bedfordshire Maltese Lace Fall Cap.
Size: 35″ x 12.25″
Starting Price: 19.99 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:03:59 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Sunderland, United Kingdom
Comments: With the central Maltese Cross, I’m inclined to attribute this fallcap to Malta. Beds workers certainly were inspired by Maltese lace, and borrowed many technical elements, but the overt inclusion of the Maltese Cross in Beds design was generally not done. There is room for discussion here. This piece does seem more delicate than one usually finds in Maltese lace, and the fan shaped motifs just inside the cap edge are unusual. But with the rather plain outside edge, and the typically Maltese ‘layered’ construction caused by the narrowness of the pillow, I’ll go with Malta on this.

Sold for 36.99 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/cmzfvqy Antique/vintage Brussels Point de Gaze lace handkerchief
Size: 13.5″ square
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:18:42 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief, basically flat work which often indicates a higher end market piece. Well done fillings, and I like the raised border of rings surrounding flower centers. Seller indicates some well done small repairs, and I found one little hole in the ground center top – nothing that really compromises this piece. Overall good condition.

Sold for 205 GBP, 11 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/d456jmo Antique/vintage Honiton lace edged handkerchief with butterfly and bee
Size: ~13″ square
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:32:29 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with figural elements, a butterfly and a bee in flight. and small bird motifs. The brides on this piece are covered with buttonhole stitches, which might kick this into the ‘Honiton Point’ category.  Basic design is snails/slugs, but the figures are great. Note also the switch in the edge design at the corners. Overall it is charming, and in very good condition. I don’t see any problems in the photos. Maybe the special motifs are a bit off color compared to the rest, but that is trivial.

Sold for 63.50 GBP, 5 bidders.

Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 10:42:36 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: Wish there were more of this. A flat Point de Gaze border with deep points. The design is a bit more naturalistic than you usually find, and I like the ornamentation in the points. Seller cites some small holes in the ground, can’t see any in the two photos. Overall good condition.

Sold for 31.221 GBP, 4 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller isohex, Sunderland, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Maltese collar with large areas of guipure in the mid section. ‘Wheat ear’ border around the top, and Maltese crosses alternating with leaf grid roundels at the bottom. Seller notes some small marks, nothing serious. Overall very good condition.

Sold for 41.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

Comments: I’m a big fan of this seller, who actively searches out antique lacemaking equipment in the Haute Loire area. There’s basically no other source for this material. Here is a lacemakers footstool with known provenance, ordered from an ébéniste in Le Puy in 1930. It looks in excellent condition; seller notes minimal usage marks.

Sold for 37.39 EUR, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/bpu7erb BINCHE BOBBIN LACE ca 1750 49 x 6.5 cms
Size: 6.5 cm x 49 cm
Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 18:00:01 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A short segment of early 18th century bobbinlace, Valenciennes or perhaps Binche. Basically the same type of lace was made in both places at this time, and the Binche industry was much smaller. We don’t really know much about the original Binche products, although today this style of lace has evolved into the Point de Fee variety of what is now known as Binche.  This sample has elaborate snowflake ground and flat motifs. A little rough along the edges from general wear, but overall good condition.

$31.00, 3 bidders, reserve not met.

Starting Price: $10.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 2, 2012 18:10:01 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief in very good condition; I can’t spot any problems from the photos. The Point de Gaze element is confined to a single rose in each corner of the piece. The bobbinlace is crisp and well executed, note the leaves on halfstitch ground. The needlelace rose appears to have raised petals. There is little in the way of decorative needlelace filings, but the piece really doesn’t need it.  It’s like a crowded flower garden, and stands perfectly well on its own.

$111.50, 6 bidders, reserve not met.

Offered by: Ebay seller eastayton, London, England, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels bobbinlace lappet with inserted droschel reseau. It is in very good condition, but has unfortunately been cut short on a diagonal at the top. The bobbin work is high quality, I especially like the little openwork flowers inserted into a field of cloth stitch. The design is very well filled, indicating a slightly earlier work, 1730’s.  One thing to look for in a lace like this is the variety of bobbin-made fillings, especially along the edges of the piece. Nicely done here.

$400.00, 4 bidders, reserve not met.

Comments: An earlier Brussels bobbinlace lappet set, which has been modified by cutting the lappets short and attaching a center section of another lace. Stylistically the pieces are the same, and if you stare hard enough, you might think they all come from the same lappet set.  This is early Brussels bobbinlace with snowflake ground fillings, but note the small areas of droschel. I think this is original, I’ve seen it before, one of the earliest examples of the use of this stitch. To me this is one of the finest bobbinlaces ever made.

Comments: A Honiton flounce in very good condition. You can see the snail/slugs inflence in this piece, but it’s definitely beyond that. The work is so nicely done that it almost has a machine-made quality to it. Too bad there aren’t any figures in it, that would have made it even more exceptional.

Sold for 71.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

Comments: This is a mystery. It’s a mixture of needlelace and bobbinlace, and note the thistle design. I’ve been looking at Honiton handkerchiefs, thinking there might be a clue in the way the lace is attached to the center cloth. Found a few similarities, but the bobbin motifs don’t much look like Honiton.  And Devon really has no needlelace tradition, there’s more in the Youghal vein. Of course they don’t have a bobbinlace tradition, at least not like this. Although there is some mention of an Irish Honiton-like bobbinlace; I’ve never seen a piece.  But consider Belgium, they could certainly handle both the bobbin and needlelace, and the mesh looks a bit Bruges-like.
Actually, I stumped. But it’s a great piece in very good condition.

Sold for 370.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Comments: This bobbin lace set is fairly complete, and was produced by the writers of the ‘Boule de Neige’ instructional pattern books (~1905 to ~1920, Imprimerie Monnoyer, Le Mans). You see these occasionally, and this is one of the nicer ones I’ve seen as far as condition goes – just a water stain on the cover and one end of the shelf where the scissors sit is missing.  I don’t know if all the equipment is original, for example the skein of thread looks a bit fine for a beginner. A very nice find.

Comments: A large Maltese handkerchief of very nice design. An ‘S’ pattern on the outside, guipure in the middle, and smaller motif circular pattern at the inside. Just one split in the center silk, seller cites a few minor pulls. Basically very good condition.

Comments: An English horseshoe stand with a large straw-filled square pillow. I love the patchwork on the pillow, obviously repaired by a loving lacemaker – it really makes the piece. The stand looks in very good original condition – note the split peg fastenings.
