Comments: A Bruges Duchesse bertha collar, no Point de Gaze elements or needlelace decorations that I can see. There seems to be a little freedom from the basic design of a leaf outer border, 13 swags filled with flowers. The spaces between these sprays are sometimes filled with different elements, in fact I almost think I see a butterfly or two. A bit crowded in this area, but the scattered look is rather appropriate. The condition looks very good, I don’t see any damage from the photos.

Comments: Another Brussels Duchesse bertha from this seller. Eight Point de Gaze inserts  with raised petal roses, note the diamond ‘windows’ in the raised petals. Sign of a better manufacturer. Good raised work in the Duchesse bobbinlace, especially around the needlelace inserts. The design is a bit chaotic, but is nicely set off by the more open needlelace inserts. A little discontinuity in the ends at the top of the piece – they might have extended the pattern on the left just a bit for a better match. But that’s minor. A few tiny holes in some Pt de Gaze mesh, also minor, overall very good condition.

Comments: A Honiton collar which certainly could have been used as a bertha. I think it’s more a mid 19th c piece.  Note the extensive tally fillings, a technique which is even used for the bride ground. The design is a bit snails/slugs, but starting to break away from that tradition – and the motifs are quite finely woven. A few breaks in the ground and a little fraying neck edge, but overall good condition.

Maybe 3rd quarter 19th c, where such ‘Crinoline’ flounces were used to decorate large hoop skirts.  Good, naturalistic design, note the esprits in the upper ground, and the elaborate needlelace medallion on each repeat.  It does have a rather elaborate engrelure. Seller notes some small holes and tears primarily in the first yard of the longer piece. Overall very good condition – the state of the machine net is extremely important in a lace like this.

Comments: An Alençon border in two pieces. Réseau fin along the edge, and brides tortillée in the upper part – a typical late 18th c Herren Alençon. (so called because it was often used for gentlemen’s ruffled cuffs). One curious thing, note the little sprigs used as esprits in the upper ground, but along the very top there are only simple circles. I guess it’s part of the design, because the lace looks intact.  The lace looks in very good condition – I had trouble spotting even tiny holes, which is great for a piece like this. Seller cites on estain – a very minor consideration. Just wish it hadn’t been cut in half.

Comments: Like most Gros Point that survives today, this one is a reassemblage of motifs from several original pieces. Not only is the design flow basically nonexistent, but there are no brides. I’m firmly convinced that there’s nothing you can’t learn about needlelace by studying Gros Point – they invented so much. This is a great piece for that kind of study, and it is a good, long length. I especially like the parts of t his where the raised edges undulate around a center motif. The condition looks good – at least I don’t see any obvious fraying. Maybe a few stains.

Comments: Two Mechlin lappets with very heavy gimp. Heather Toomer shows a piece with a similar gimp treatment in plate 216 of “Antique Lace: Identifying Types and Techniques”. She says it was introduced into Mechlin in the 1760’s and 1770’s in imitation of the cordonnet of French needlelaces like Alençon. You see it occasionally, not often. I think that dating agrees with the design of these pieces.
There seem to be a seam 7″ down on both pieces, but it doesn’t much affect the design. It’s a bit of a mystery. A little damage to some fillings, and also some staining, but basically good condition.
