Starting Price: 19.00 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 17, 2012 01:32:55 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller ilataitunpetitnavire2012, Trouville sur Mer, France
Comments: A narrow Point de Gaze border, no raised work. It’s a simple design, and the piece looks in very good condition. What especially intrigues me is the French business card underneath this piece, I wonder if that has a connection, or is included in the listing.
Sold for 32.00 EUR, 4 bidders.

Comments: A Duchesse fan with Mother of Pearl sticks, later 19th century. Nice case, unfortunately the fan is back side facing forward. No Point de Gaze inserts, there might be a little needlelace used as decorative fillings, but photos aren’t close enough to tell. One slip (second stretch of the rib) is broken. The design is dense with some naturalistic flowers, above average in quality. Condition of the lace looks very good.

Comments: Just to attempt some consistency in terminology, I’d call this a mantilla headcover. It is a large point ground bobbinlace that looks all original. I’m guessing Bucks, although I haven’t seen anything like it before. Seller cites one stain, and I can’t see any damage to the lace. Very good condition all around.

Comments: A panel of Dresden drawnwork, which certainly could be a dress front. Note the birds which provide a really charming naivete. This type of work often was an affordable alternative to similar handmade laces of the mid 18th c. This one is of rare form, excellent work and design. I see a few darned spots in the photos, minor condition issues. Overall good condition.

Comments: A large lappet scarf. I’m about 50% sure this is handmade Chantilly, the photos aren’t close enough to tell. It has large areas of half stitch which always make me a little suspicious. And it is quite large for Chantilly of this form. Still, it has a nice design and appears to be in very good condition. Seller doesn’t note any defects, and I can’t tell anything from the photos.

Comments: Matching collar and cuffs of Honiton with a needlelace ground – sometimes called Honiton Point. Good naturalistic motifs, well out of the snail/slugs esthetic. Seller cites two openings in the cuffs and some small ages spots on the collar, basically very good condition.

Comments: This Irish Crochet collar looks interesting. Only two motifs, one of which seems to be a butterfly. The ground is some kind of knotted picot, but there’s no closeup so it’s hard to tell. The edges look like they may have been added later. I can spot one hole in the ground, basically good condition. The seller is showing some other pieces from this ‘scrapbook’.

Comments: Mid 18th c lappets with a droschel ground. I’ve got a feeling the description in the post is wrong, so I’ve written the seller about it. These are quite high quality. What you look for in something like this are a good variety of bobbin-made fillings, and small well-defined motifs in an undulating, naturalistic pattern. I especially like the quatrefoil and snowflake variation fillings here. Most pieces surviving from this time have a few pulls in the ground, same here, nothing serious. I’ve got a feeling that the outside picot edge is a later addition – this was often done in the 19th century to ‘liven up’ an earlier lace. An impressive set.

Comments: An elaborate 19th c square ground Valenciennes border. At just over 3″ wide, this is a finely made piece with quite an elaborate pattern – just wish there were more of it. There is one join. I don’t see any damage problems from the photos – basically very good condition.

Comments: A square-mesh Valenciennes handkerchief, rather small. Note the elaborate sculpting of the inner cloth. The lace might have been cut to accommodate the cloth structure – hard to tell without more closeups. This piece also has some nice fillings, unusual for Valenciennes. Seller cites some spots, and I don’t see any damage from the photos, overall very good condition.

Comments: A wide flounce of Brussels bobbin and needlelace application on machine net. The needlelace is located in the flower fillings, and also forms shading in the petals by using what looks like the Point de Gaze mesh stitch. A good naturalistic design, note the sprays of wheat as a motif. The design fills the entire space, with no esprits. I think this is a later 19th c piece. Seller cites some openings including one 9″ repair. Basically good condition overall.

Comments: I don’t think this is Maltese – it’s the kind of silk guipure that seems to come from somewhere in France. It isn’t much documented. Note the woven leaves on top of the halfstitch guipure, you see that in Cluny. It looks in very good condition from what I can see from the photos.

Comments: A Brussels bobbin and needlelace application on machine net – a little similar in feel to the ‘wheat ear’ one reviewed above. Technically this is superb. Note the very naturalistic flowers with subtle shading, and the needlelace fillings in the ribbon motif at the edge. Unfortunately it is extremely short, basically a fragment, and there are several repairs to the net. The condition of everything except the net looks very good.

Comments: Alençon lappets around 1780. The ground is probably brides tortillée. These lappets are joined with another band which as the seller points out, was probably part of a headdress. Often when you see this type of thing the joining band is a little smaller than the main piece so that a cap back can fit in rather naturally, with the joining band ruffled around the edge. Here the joining band is just slightly small, but it does seem to have the same pattern as the lappets. Which means this is a very unusual matched set. There are scattered small holes in the mesh, but nothing else I can spot from the photos. Overall good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse triangular dress insert of curiously asymmetric design. The Point de Gaze down the center has raised petal roses. The design is unusual and quite effective, someone put a lot of thought into this. The flowers on the left side are balanced by leaves and buds on the right. I see one broken bride, but overall very good condition, especially in the Point de Gaze.

Comments: It might be a little headpiece,m and the piece does look original. Honiton guipure – I don’t know if the brides are bobbin or needle made. Snails/slugs esthetic with varied tally fillings. The design is pretty scattered like maybe someone threw all the leftovers together. But it works. Apart from a few age stains it looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A mid 18th c lappet of Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground. Quite a nice piece, with some staining that would come out with proper washing. Note the quatrefoils used as fillings at the end – this is also found in contemporary Mechlin lace. Seller cites 3 small repairs that I’m having trouble finding, and some damage at the top that is obvious. But overall it’s a fine piece if in need of a little tender care.

Comments: This is a contemporary bobbinlace piece, and very nicely done. Reminds me a bit of Withof Duchesse. It might be a pattern in some contemporary pattern book, suggestions are welcome. Excellent condition, nicely framed.
