Comments: A small silk Maltese collar. Neck edge is a layer of vertical leaves, outer layer has typical Maltese crosses and rosette motifs, with an inner grid of leaves. A little minor fraying on the ends, otherwise very good condition.

Comments: A Point de Gaze handkerchief with raised petal roses, done in a very naturalistic way. Good fillings, and nice work with chains of raised rings. Definitely a high-end market piece. Seller cites a few openings that I’m having a hard time spotting – maybe one in the upper left corner? And a few storage stains. Overall very good condition.

Comments: A round tablecloth of Italian Cantu bobbinlace. Cantu with well done figures is about as good as it gets for this lace, and these are very nice. And the scroll-work has a kind of Arts & Crafts textile feel. I’m not wild about the filet inserts, but they appear to be made for the piece. All the same shape, no obvious cutouts in the lace, and pretty much the same design. But sticking filet in a really good Cantu piece is a little jarring. Looks in very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Small well-done motifs with a little raised work in a nice, dense design. A few needlelace accents used as fillings. The bobbinlace looks in good condition, and there are a few pinholes in the net, not bad. A few small repairs in the net. Overall good condition.

Comments: A wide Maltese silk border. Large pieces of Maltese like shawls are fairly common, but the better wide borders are a bit unusual, and tend in general to be quit high quality. This one has good, solid guipure work, and extensive woven leave grounds – a variation with some little crosses between the leaves. My only gripe is that the Maltese crosses along the bottom are a little askew with some strange ground treatment below the bottom arm of each cross. They almost look like they don’t go with the piece, although the technique is quite similar. I like the little looped bottom edge very much. Seller cites somepale marks, but overall looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A Cluny or Miracourt silk bobbinlace triangular dress insert with attached neckband. The neckband is of a similar technique but doesn’t match perfectly. I’m not sure if they were made separately or together. The gimp thread is a heavy silk wrapped cord, which I tend to associate with Miracourt. The cord is a bit stiff and doesn’t lay straight easily. Overall a nicely treated guipure with raised work on both whole and half stitch backgrounds. Looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A small collar of floral Beds, where the floral part is mostly the leaves around the outer edge. Nice design and well made, although the weaving on the leaves is a little uneven. A few stains, but overall looks in very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments: Two bobbinlace borders, both Flemish. The top one looks cut from a larger piece, with a separate picot border. It has a Kat stitch ground which may have been put in later. The top piece is a good Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground, also with large areas of picoted brides. Nice fillings, and note the little butterflies. Looks mid 18th century, and aside from a few minor holes and spots, in overall very good condition. This is by far the better piece.

Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl (there have been a lot of these on Ebay recently). Good design, nice light work, but there are splits parallel to the long edge. Probably along the racroc line, but I’m not positive of that. I might have a suggestion where you could get something like this repaired. It’s a typical, romantic floral design, that other than the split, looks in very good condition.

Comments: An elaborate Point de Gaze bertha. Excellent and varied fillings, and note the matching Venise outer border. Sometimes you see these two in combination, but not often. No raised work in the Point de Gaze. A few small holes in the mesh, I count maybe 5 from the photos and who knows about the rest. But considering the quality I think that’s minor. Basically overall good condition.

Comments: This kind of has the form of a mantilla – more or less oval center (hard to tell from the photos) with lappet ends, all surrounded by a separate fringe. The lace is Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine net. Good looking delicate piece, and seller cites a few small repairs and scattered openings. Overall good condition.

Comments: A wide embroidered tulle border, meant for the bottom of a priest’s alb. Looks like Tambour embroidery. The design is not too sophisticated, but the condition looks good. Seller cites a few repairs. This seller is showing similar items such as Ebay #261149027576 and #261149024650.

Comments: A long border of flat needlelace in the style of Point de France. The roughly hexagonal mesh is more characteristic of French laces than Italian in the later 17th c. It also has some vertical symmetry, more in keeping with the ‘candelabra’ style of the French. Is it an early piece? It is very long and in excellent shape, which in itself would be unusual for an early piece. The lower border is a little simple, and the picots look a little heavier than those on the brides. The upper border looks like a bobbin-made engrelure, although photos aren’t close enough to tell. At least on the bottom I think this has been cut from a larger piece and the looped border added later. Likely the same on the top, but I’d need a closer look to tell for certain. As for the main part, it looks good, but I’d say the jury’s out for the moment.

Comments: A handkerchief with a Binche border, late 19th or even 20th c. No small tallies that would take it over into Point de Fee space, just the wonderful snowflake ground. I was a bit puzzled on the design – it almost looks like an inner and an outer border. But after finding the symmetry, most obvious on the lower part of the piece, it starts to make sense. Seller cites a few spots, but I don’t see any damage to the lace from the photos. Very good condition.

Comments: A tape lace border, looks early Milanese. I’m going here mainly by the upper and lower borders which have an Italian complexity. Also the nice picoted bride treatment. I see a few breaks in the photos but nothing serious. Basically good condition.

Comments: There are quite a mix of technique in this lappet scarf. There are Point de Gaze inserts and decorative fillings. The lace looks like Duchesse, but note the square-meshed ‘Val de Gand’ type ground just above the end Point de Gaze inserts. This could take it out of Brussels. It’s an elaborate lace, but I find the designs a bit confusing. Especially at the ends of each lappet, they don’t quite match up. Seller thinks one flower might have been replaced. A few scattered holes, but basically good condition.

Comments: A border of buratto – embroidery on leno weave net. It could be an early piece, the designs are quite refined, and there is evidence of some drawnwork in the borders. The lower border is cut. Note the double headed eagle. Dating pieces like this is very difficult, it continued to be made into the 19th century, especially in Sardinia. But this one does have a nice look, and the thread is an uneven linen, could be handspun. Condition is good, some breaks in the lower border and I think a few pulls in the main work. Overall very good, especially if it is an older piece.

Comments: I’m guessing Russian Yelts on these. I’ve seen this form before, although they should be attached together at the top. I can’t see the state of the tops of these very well from the photos. I would expect Yelts to have some tapes looped back over themselves, and you do see this a little in this piece. They appear to be in very good condition.

Comments: Knitted Pita lace doilies from the Azores. This lace is little documented, and tends to turn up in odd places, like dusty corners of antique shops. It is advertised as worked in Pita fiber, which is actually the Century plant, or American Aloe (although it is not a true aloe) The plant is native to Mexico and was imported to the Azores by the Spanish. However, it is also possible that these doilies are made from very fine heavily starched cotton, and frankly, I haven’t discounted that possibility. The Azores became a center for very fine knitted lace from pita fiber around 1840. Apparently they also made bobbinlace out of pita, but I don’t know any examples. I have seen knitted lace with a slightly different fiber, very supple but with a flatter thread, and it shines like gold in certain lights. So I’ve got a lot of confusion on the issue. This is something I’m going to try and research soon. These doilies are lovely, one has 3 holes, the others are very good condition.

Comments: A good length of Youghal lace. Nicely done with that peculiar bride ground, and some grids of rings used as fillings. Not quite as exuberent as you sometimes find, but a nice example. Seller cites a few loose brides and some light stains close to one end, nothing serious. Overall very good condition.
