Comments: From the harp motifs, I’d say this is a densely patterned Limerick embroidered net handkerchief. The motifs are cleverly darned to resemble cloth.  The monogram might be read as ‘Erie’, probably referring to Ireland, but that’s just a guess. Looks a bit worn around the outer edges, but overall good condition. I don’t see anything wrong with the net itself.

Comments: This has the look of a much older Flemish tape lace. I have seen other sellers label similar pieces as late 17th c. While copies were certainly made throughout the 19th century, this type is not well documented. as a later commercial product. I’m hesitating on assigning a date, but I think I’d go earlier rather than later. A few loose brides, otherwise in good condition.

Comments: An impressive looking bobbinlace set of table linens. It has the tape-like curved work reminiscent of Cantu, and lots of good animal, bird and insect figures, some with raised work. I’ll call it Italian, but not 100% sure. The bridework also reminds me a bit of Bruges, but I think the figural work is more on the Italian side. Seller cites some age spots, and I don’t see any obvious damage or signs of laundry wear, so I’ll rate the condition at very good.

Comments: An border of cloth applique on machine net in a design of flowers, tulips and vines. Some embroidery enhances the flowers, and there’s a little work with needlerun stitches on the net used as fillings. Hard to tell how the edges of the motifs are treated, perhaps machine overcast? A few pinholes and occasional tiny hole in the net, but nothing major. It has been detached from some kind of garment, seller says it was from a rochet, but I don’t see obvious religious symbolism. Overall good condition.

Comments: A square Belgian two-part lace pillow from Bruges. The smaller part can be inserted into the bottom to provide more room for the bobbins at the end of the piece. The base is triangular with one drawer shown in the photos, probably another on the other side. There is a third drawer at the back top. These were usually stuffed with wool, and the lacemaker would also cover the original canvas with another colored cloth. This one appears to be in exceptionally good, usable condition. They don’t come up for sale very often.  Comes with some bobbins.

Comments: This auction isn’t ending for some time, but the piece is so extraordinary that I’m reviewing it now. A mat of Binche, Point de Fe variation, worked by an English lacemaker. It took a year of work, over 400 bobbins, several hours per day. Excellent figural work, and note the famous Bruges belfry. It is a real joy to see modern lacemakers succeeding so well at this difficult lace.
