Comments: An interesting continuous mid 18th c bobbinlace with the 5-hole ground. Sometimes this is simply known as ‘Flanders’, however Valenciennes of this period experimented with a lot of grounds, including this one. It has a typical Louis XV undulating design, which as the seller notes, can be mirror-paired to produce a wider piece. The condition is short of good with numerous holes and stains, but this doesn’t come up too often.

Comments: An Honiton handkerchief, with a star shaped center and well-done monogram. the lace is snails/slugs esthetic, and turns the star into a very effective square. Tightly woven, good woven tally grid fillings, and I like the edging of the cloth. I don’t see any condition problems from the photos, generally very good condition.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Includes a few small needlelace fillings for simple accents. It is a fairly large piece, typical of handkerchiefs made of this kind of lace. The motifs are fairly simple with a good pattern. A little frayed, some pulls in the tulle, some pinholes and a few tiny repairs. Generally good condition.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief with raised petal rose Point de gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is a bit on the Bruges side, simple gimp outline, no raised work. a few tiny holes in the needlelace mesh and some loose and broken brides. Seller indicates the piece has recently been washed. Basically good condition.

Comments: A Milanese flounce, square plaited ground and a simple double tape and flowerhead pattern. The ground is a bit unusual, probably a later 18th or early 19th c piece. The lower edge looks added later. Condition is short of good; staining and some serious holes near one end. Damage is fairly well localized.

Comments: An interesting fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. The lace is almost a Point d’Angleterre – well done bobbinlace motifs with what looks like a Point de Gaze ground. At the same time it crosses over into the usually coarser Point de Milan, which has both bride and needle-made grounds. Here the bobbinlace is nicely done with bobbin-made fillings, while you would expect more needlelace ‘modes’ in Point d’A. The lace looks in basically very good condition, I don’t see any obvious problems in the photos. The sticks are badly broken.

Comments: An Irish Crochet shawl collar. Tightly worked motifs of shamrocks, pinwheels and flowers. Ever notice how Irish crochet is almost always arranged with three lobed motifs? The picots looked crocheted, not Clones knots, but it’s a bit hard to tell in the photos. No particular symmetry to the design, but it works nicely. Looks in overall very good condition.

Comments: A border of Italian Mezzo Punto – basically an early (mid 16th c) mixed tape lace made in imitation of Gros Point. The motifs are laid down with a woven tape, whether this is bobbin made is not known. Needlelace stitches are used as fillings, and the raised edges are worked as in Gros Point. A well-done piece of this lace can be quite impressive. This one is interesting with a good variety of filling stitches and carefully done raised work. Hard to say if it’s been reworked; I can’t easily follow the design, so it probably has been. The condition looks very good for something this old, if indeed the date can be better verified. A few repairs and some fraying along the edges.

Comments: This has a lot of the classic signatures of Pescocostanzo lace from the province of l’Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is a guipure 6-pointed star ground. One might argue that they took the beginnings of the Milan tape lace tradition and made it into a guipure. It also ties in well with the Northern Italian, Southern France freehand laces. This is a very little researched lace, yet it is extremely interesting with a variety of grounds and a rather chunky pattern (one of my favorite laces). The lower border in this piece is fairly elaborate, typical of Italian laces. Hard to date, maybe late 18th to early 19th c. A few brown stains, but looks in very good condition from the photos.

Comments: What specifically identifies this handkerchief as Honiton? Something about the way the roses are made, the little woven tally fillings, and the picoted brides. Not snails/slugs, but not too far away from that esthetic. It’s a bit hard to tell from the photos but I think the monograms are applied Honiton-made initials. Seller says this has been washed, and some faint browning to one corner. One separation lower center, basically very good condition.

Comments: Another Mezzo Punto piece, and an interesting comparison to the one reviewed above. Here the tapes are more obvious, and the raised edges seem a little clunky. Still, enough survives to make this a good way to study how the raised edges were executed in the early Italian laces. I won’t guess as to exact origin, but I don’t see obvious reasons to steer away from Italy. The piece has been greatly altered, but ignoring that the lace is somewhat on the low side of good in condition.

Comments: A Brabant flounce, probably 2nd quarter 18th c. This type of lace often survives in wide, long lengths, and on that score this is exceptional. It has a typical combination plaited and bride ground. This type of lace was meant to be an imitation of the more sophisticated products of Ghent and Brussels, so the design, while typical, is more naive. I do see a few repairs along the top edge, condition is generally good.

Comments: A small bolero jacket of Brussels Duchesse. Costume items of this lace are very unusual, so it’s difficult to say if this is the original form. If not, someone did an extremely good job. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Just a few pinholes in the needlelace mesh, occasional broken bride, everything else looks in very good condition.

Comments: A bonnet veil of tambour embroidery on machine net. There’s a heavier silky gimp run in around the motifs. Very hard to place a date on something like this, just say later 19th c. A few pinholes in the tulle, basically very good condition.

Comments: A square shawl of Brussels needlelace application on machine net. The motifs have a rather thin appearance, and the trimming of the tulle is a little rough in places. Needlelace applique in a piece this large is fairly rare. This has a good design of an outer and inner row of flowers, small sprigs used as esprits in the body of the tulle. Seller cites one small repair, and from the photos the condition looks generally very good.

Comments: A needlerun embroidery mantilla. A very dense stitch pattern meant to imitate blonde, and it does a very good job of that. Some pulls in the tulle, a few separations along the edge, and a little edge fraying. Basically good condition.
