Comments: A pieced lace that is more a broken up tape lace than a true pieced lace. It does look like a later 19th c piece, and the trefoil flower heads could have originated in Italy. But a Bruges product is not out of the question, especially with the picoted brides and single woven tally fillings. Seller cites a few age marks, and I don’t see any obvious damage from the photos. Basically very good condition.

Comments: A later 18th c Valenciennes round hole mesh border. It has a light, fine design, finer than it looks at 1.5″ wide. One of my favorite laces. This one has a few stains, and some localized breaks along the top edge. Generally good condition.

Comments: A small Honiton guipure collar, snails/slugs esthetic, symmetric design, nicely done. The neckline looks like an addition, but still part of the design. Basically very good condition, might be a little staining around the neckline and a loose spot at one inner point, but no other obvious damage.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised work and minimal fillings, jst some heavy rings used at flower centers and in connecting bands. It’s a narrow border, and the design uses all the space with naturalistic flowers and a few leaves. Looks in overall very good condition from the photos.

Comments: A complex border of Point de Gaze with raised petal roses. It has some unusual flower motifs and the fillings in the connecting bands are quite complex. Interesting to see how the makers could fit so many raised petal roses in such a narrow border. I especially like the little sun-like medallions along the lower edge. I see a few pinholes in the mesh, and the seller says some reattachments are needed to the engrelure. Basically very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller great_stuff432, Odessa, Texas, United States
Comments: A Belgian pieced lace fan with rather conventional inlaid Mother of Pearl (likely abalone) sticks. It has the original tassel, and the framing has kept the condition pristine. It looks unused.
The lace is made with very fine thread, and is of a typical form for a later 19th c fan leaf, and does not look cut or adapted in any way. I think the sticks and lace are contemporary. It is a high end product with an interesting asymmetric rather Art Nouveau looking design. The fillings are a simple snowflake grid variation, along with some latticework, unfortunately the closeups aren’t close enough to see the details. Note the little ‘islands’ in the brides around the center of the work – this is often found in Bruges laces, not in Brussels Duchesse or very old examples. And there is some very finely done raised work in the veining, more typical of Brussels work. There also appears to be some shading with halfstitch areas in the clothwork, quite densely worked. Cotton thread of this fineness was easily available at this time, and the only way to ascribe a very early date to this piece is to determine if the thread is the type of very fine linen that ceased production around 1840 under a microscope. We must not underestimate the capabilities of the later 19th century Belgian lacemakers to produce outstanding works.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre border – fine bobbinlace motifs with a Point de Gaze needle-made ground. It also has some good needle-made ring fillings in the motifs. Naturalistic design, well executed. This is one of the better products of the later 19th century Belgian laces. Looks in generally very good condition from the photos.

Comments: An impressive looking dated Plior, seller says it is from Auvergne. It has both a chip carved surface and pierced work. Much of the original paint remains. Now I’m assuming this is an authentic item, I’m not an expert here, but buyer beware on French primitive wood antiques. For me the jury is perpetually out on things like this, but I have to admit, it looks great and is in very good condition.

Comments: A point ground border with extensive kat stitch fillings. Very difficult to attribute something like this, such rather geometric patterns were made in many places. In this one the seller indicates the thread is a little large, and also note there are no picots on the lower border – atypical for many point ground laces. Without any further information I’ll go with Bucks, but only about a 50% confidence. It looks in generally very good condition from the photos.

Comments: The technique is Bruges Bloemwerk, but coming from China, I’m thinking this is a new Chinese piece. China is a complete unknown in the history of lace, much maligned without cause or proper research. We need to correct this impression.

Comments: A Chantilly fan with faux tortoise-shell sticks, monogrammed. Seller says they are Bakelite, I don’t know how to recognize that material in a fan. The lace also seems to have the same monogram, and the design is a bit skewed with the monograph off to one side, interrupting the symmetry. The lace and sticks are in generally very good condition, the silk backing is split.

Comments: A handkerchief of Belgian bobbinlace, Duchesse de Bruges style. It’s a little unusual with the heavy emphasis on the ‘ivy’ leaves, and I find the design quite effective. The mass of leaves is offset by some simple flowers and trefoils. Quite an elaborate interface with the center cloth. Some worn spots in the cloth, but the lace looks basically in very good condition.

Comments: A collar of Honiton point lace, meaning Honiton motifs with a needle made ground. This is a later development in Honiton lace. The motifs are large, snails/slugs esthetic, a bit loosely worked. Woven tally fillings. Generally good condition, a few broken brides and small repairs.

Comments: A border of Youghal with an enthusiastic design, excellent technique. Note the typical Youghal scalloped header. Youghal is such an interesting lace when done well; really making an independent Irish design statement. The seller has done an excellent job of assessing condition, a few minor holes, etc. Basically very good condition.

Comments: An interesting tape lace, with the tapes doubled back to form the trail. Well done header and lower edge of similar bobbinlace. Picoted double brides. Technically it isn’t a complex lace, and could have been made over a wide time range, late 17th into the 19th c. Probably Italian Milanese genera. A little stained, no obvious damage, basically very good condition.
