Comments: A rectangular veil or shawl of tambour embroidery on machine net. The borders and corners are heavily embroidered with many sprigs used as esprits in the main ground – which is a lot of extra work.

Damage: Some minor obvious repairs and pinholes
Soilage: Cream color

Size: 10 cm excluding engrelure x 156 cm
Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: Sep 23, 2013 12:01:39 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacier, Leyburn, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse border. No raised work on the Point de Gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is a bit on the Bruges side, a few raised pieces on halfstitch ground.
Condition: Modifications: Cut both ends, part of the engrelure missing.
Damage: Might be some fraying op top, or maybe just loose threads from missing engrelure. Photos not close enough to evaluate the Point de Gaze condition well.
Soilage: Slight discoloration in one section – can’t tell where from photos. Looks a little wrinkled, might be a past washing.
Sold for 46.50 GBP, 5 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A rectangular border of Limerick needlerun embroidery on machine net. At least it has the flat needlerun appearance of Limerick, but could also be Liere. It does have the white heavier net that drapes so beautifully, often associated with English work. Two corners have larger inserts, probably indicating that this was to be folded in a triangular shape. Excellent embroidery, many varied fillings. Note the leaves used as esprits in the main ground.
Condition: Modifications: none
Damage: A few pinholes and groups of localized small holes, and some tiny repairs.
Soilage: Some fold lines. Can’t really tell from the photos, but it looks quite clean.

Comments: Seller says this was purchased in Venice in 1984, as a Burano needlelace. Years ago I visited the Jesurum store in Venice and spoke with the current Moreno owner. He gave me a fragment of ‘rosepoint’ which looks very much (although more elaborate) like this piece, but definitely the same technique. He told me how workers were selected for their hand characteristics to do the different stitches.
Aesthetically this piece isn’t really up to best 19th c standards, and the thread is a little fuzzy. But it is an unusual form with all the bride work, and a little raised work, and nicely done.
Condition: Modifications: none
Damage: None
Soilage: None that I can see.

Comments: A Maltese shawl collar. 3 layers; outer edge of alternating Maltese crosses and woven leaf grids, middle layer basically flower roundels, neckline ‘C’ shaped guipure.
Condition: Modifications: none
Damage: Intact, just looks a little frayed, occasional broken bride.
Soilage: A little staining, overall slight wrinkling.

Comments: A pair of Irish Crochet cuffs. I don’t think they were made as cuffs, probably adapted from a border, but I’m not sure. Good raised work, and I think the picots are Clones knots. The design looks elaborate, but it’s hard to tell from the photographs.
Condition: Modifications: Suspect cuffs are adapted from a border. Remains of cloth at the top, probably removed from a garment.
Damage: None obvious
Soilage: Look quite clean.
Sold for 27.50 GBP, 3 bidders.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: Two identical (different monogram design but same EL letters) handkerchiefs edged with Valenciennes. The lace has been made to fit these shapes, not just a gathered border. The start/finish is midway up on the right side on both. Fairly standard later 19thc design, nicely worked.
Condition: Modifications: None.
Damage: One small hole in the cloth at the monogram corner in the upper handkerchief
Soilage: Two very small stains in the cloth of the upper hankie. Otherwise they look very clean.
http://tinyurl.com/oxwfqda Antique Brabant ? handmade bobbin lace very lovely length
Size: 2.75″ x 47.75″
Starting Price: 49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 26, 2013 07:19:22 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A pieced bobbinlace lace border, quite narrow. It looks early, but I’m worried about a few things. The top border is very simple, atypical of an early piece. The ground in Brabant is normally a 6-pointed plaited star, not simple hexagonal brides. The ‘tulle’ fillings are also a little off. And note the fillings, they look more English than Flemish. I’m thinking this is a later 19th c piece of the type called Point de Flandre, or ‘Old Flanders’. Although it does look like linen, and something about how the clothwork is handled has an earlier English Devon feel. Jury’s out on this one.
Condition: Modifications: Cut both ends
Damage: Minor pulls and 2 small break along top
Soilage: Looks good from the photos, but seller says it could use a launder (conservationally correct, of course).
Sold for 50.99 GBP, 2 bidders.
http://tinyurl.com/qfs25nl Antique early Reticalla & Genoese needlelace pair of lovely cuffs…. collector
Size: 14″ atop edge, 27″ lower edge, 6″ deep
Starting Price: 69.99 GBP with reserve
Auction ends: Sep 26, 2013 08:06:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A pair of cuffs each with 4 layers of lace – three plaited bobbinlace, 1 reticella cutwork. Hard to tell if these are very early, but there are a few promising indications. The lower border has the massive appearance that is often found in Genoese. The Reticella has remnants of the original cloth on top and bottom. The borders on the top and next to the bottom appear to be of the same lace, and have a Venetian plaited appearance. I think it all might be an early piece, however it falls in that large category where some solid dating techniques would be very valuable.
Condition: Modifications: Probably made up from a longer length
Damage: Some minor pulls, a break in one top band, some rejoining needed.
Soilage: None

Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: A square veil of muslin applique on machine net. The motif borders are tamboured on, which probably indicates a Belgian origin. A few needlerun fillings, quite simple. The overall design is impressive, well filled with romantic flowers. It almost looks like there’s a separate border surrounding the veil, but it is all one piece.
Condition: Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional break in net, two small holes
Soilage: ‘antique white’ color
