Comments: A Maltese collar with long front points. 3 part construction. Outer border alternating Maltese crosses and flowers. Inner portion some wire ground in a rectangular pattern, and good guipure work in the collar corners and at the front neck points. Neckline is a row of sun motifs edged with crossed woven leaves which continue down the front.

Comments: A border of tambour embroidery on machine net. Unfinished at the top, but there’s a wavy line that probably is an attempt at finishing. Very nice, well worked scroling design, no esprits in the upper border. It’s a piece that does a lot with some simple motifs.
Condition:
Modifications: unfinished top edge, cut on the one visible edge.
Damage: A few loose threads along the picot border. Tulle looks in good shape.
Soilage: The piece has been washed.

Comments: I’ll call it a Punto Milano – Flemish bobbinlace with a needle-made ground. There was a lot of this made in the later 19th century. The motifs on this are fairly simple, a kind of vine and trefoil pattern. Fairly fast to make, and you can do large pieces.
Condition:
Modifications: One end finished, not sure about the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, although there aren’t many closeups for such a large piece.
Soilage: Seller cites some storage marks.

Comments: A set of 8 doilies of Ñanduti. Very simple design of palm leaves around the borders, and ‘jojoba’ fillings. I just got a really good book on Ñanduti by a local author, but it’s all in Spanish so I’ll have to dig to find some references to that. These are unusual, I’ve never seen the fillings used over such a large area.

Comments: This is described as a bobbinlace tablecloth or bedspread. You can see very little of it, but it does look like a well done Italian Guipure. Quite sturdy, plaited picoted brides, a few flower centers of woven leaves. It certainly is a large piece, looks well made, but without adequate photography or description, very hard to tell anything else.

Comments: This appears to be a Beds dress front with typical plaited borders. The neckline is quite unusual, and note the raised tallies on top of halfstitch leaves. I do wonder if it isn’t a bit on the French Cluny side, since this technique isn’t too common with Beds. And I’m a bit thrown by the lines of woven tallies around the corners, and the ‘islands’ where several picoted brides meet. But for lack of any definitive evidence, I’ll call it Beds.

Comments: A Maltese lappet scarf – two part construction. Both inner and outer parts are alternating flowers roundels with a square grid of woven leaves. All these alternate across the piece as well. One Maltese cross at each end. Looks like silk from the closeup photos.
Condition:
Modifications: None.

Comments: A small Irish Crochet collar. Tightly worked with a little raised work, and some motifs crossing over others. The motifs are a bit abstract, although there are recognizable trefoils. I wonder if this is a French piece? picoted brides are quite heavy, altogether it is a good, substantial design.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One break center back neck edge, a few other breaks especially on the outer edge.
Soilage: Seller says unwashed mid-cream color. I think I see a few small rust stains here and there.

Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: This is the kind of piece that shows you just how difficult it is to date Gros Point needlelace. Some of it looks reassembled, and that calls into question the lattice bride system. That in itself doesn’t bother me so much – the ornamentation of the brides is typical of 17th c work. What bothers me is the lack of a really smooth finish to the clothwork – there was considerable ‘dry-pressing’ done as part of the finishing process. Plus the rather lackluster modeling of the raised work – not really deeply carved, all looks a little flat. Still, this is a piece that could use carbon dating.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks reassembled in places, and I doubt all the edges are original. If any.
Damage: Many breaks in the bride lattice and along edges.
Soilage: Seller cites several marks and age patina.

Comments: Another Beds collar, this one with long front points. The outer edge is plaited, and there is a good guipure pattern against a square picoted mesh ground on the inside. The motifs are quite large with raised tallies for definition. It resembles the previous Beds collar reviewed, and again I’ll suggest it has a Cluny look. But not enough to deviate from the Beds attribution.

Damage: One break along the neck edge just to the right of center back in the first photo.

Comments: A very long, deep flounce of needlelace applique on machine net – note the scalloped edge. Difficult to see the pattern given the way the photos are done, but the motifs seem fairly simple, and there are no esprits in the ground. The net drapes quite nicely.
Condition:
Modifications: I can’t see the ends so don’t know if they are cut. One photo shows part of an engrelure.

Comments: A pair of Irish Crochet cuffs. Good design of grapes, trefoils, and several different flowerheads. The same raised rings used in the grapes are used in the centers of the other motifs. They are mirror images of each other. Tightly worked, and I think the picots are crocheted loops.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites a few tiny breaks that I can’t find.
Soilage: Basically white. The raised rings look like they might be made in a slightly different color thread, or maybe just a little dirt from wear.

Comments: A shawl collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. Two of the inserts have only decorative ‘mode’ fillings – unusual. The bobbinlace has some good raised work. Overall a typical Duchesse design.

Comments: A flat Point de Gaze handkerchief. Rather complex naturalistic design giving it a bit of a crowded look. I like the unusual treatment of leaves around the edge with raised rings and decorative clothwork. The ‘mode’ fillings are fairly simple.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: I can easily count the 6 small holes cited by the seller, and there are a few other pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: High quality Maltese deep border which has been cut in two pieces. When the Maltese/Gozo workers really concentrate on wide borders the results can be extremely good. Note the large areas of guipure that look almost like woven cloth, against a beautifully done undulating background. Small, well worked tallies in cross patterns. A very good example.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut into two pieces

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief with repairable damage. The lace is on the snail/slugs style side, with the crowded English flower garden effect that is so charming. The ground appears to be needle-made, but more like you find in a Battenburg spider stitch – not the twisted stitches of actual Honiton Point.
Condition:
Modifications: Center cut out of the cloth, and a longer cut through the lace. This could be restored. Looks like some photos are showing the backside of the piece.
Damage: The lace itself looks in good shape.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief. The rather formal roundels in the corners are a bit unusual. Some rolled raised work in the leaves, and gimps are nicely used to define the roundels. A good middle market product.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes and wear in the fabric.

Comments: Two cuffs of Honiton Point with figural elements, birds along with typical flowers and leaves. Looks like they were made as cuffs and not adapted from a border. A little bit on the snail/slugs side, but not too much. The flowers are a bit more varied than one finds in s/s.

Comments: A narrow scarf of Point de Gaze. No raised work, and with a beautiful naturalistic design. Excellent decorate ‘mode’ fillings. Note how nicely the linen sticth follows the lines of the design in the largely flat, undecorated motifs – quite sophisticated.
Condition:
Modifications: Two halves have been joined together in the center – unclear if this is original or not.
Damage: Seller cites one ‘nick’ in a flower, not sure where it is.
Soilage: Dark cream color, but I’d think twice before doing anything about it.
