Size: not given
Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2013 05:37:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gennevieve1, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse fan with gold embossed Mother of Pearl sticks. Photos aren’t close enough to say if the Point de Gaze roses have raised petals. The Duchesse bobbinlace is fairly conventional, but with an unusual arched and picoted ground pattern at the top of the PdG inserts. This piece has a provenance, purchased by the seller’s grandmother from J. Duvelleroy at the store in Regent Street, London around 1900. No specific documentation other than the original box.
Modifications: none – Nice to have the original box in such good shape.
Damage: Nothing specific that I can see – photos aren’t close enough to evaluate the PdG mesh. The sticks appear to be in good shape, which is unusual.
Condition:
Soilage: Seller says the piece has been kept in the box and is ‘aged’ (no specifics as to what that means.
Sold for 213.00 GBP, 7 bidders.

Starting Price: $35.00
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2013 10:22:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller atelier1900, Gallard, France
Comments: A small handkerchief with Point de Gaze needlelace in one corner. The lace doesn’t appear to have been cut from a larger piece, and is attached to the rather plain cloth quite nicely. Actually you don’t see this ‘one corner’ style very often. I think it’s a later piece. The work is conventional PdG with 3 raised petal roses – some wrapped bead-like decorations, but no special decorative ‘modes. Good middle market design. Note the nicely done chain of picots on the outer edge – unclear if this is just a technical convenience or an imitation of Alençon horsehair.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: Nothing obvious, just a few original loose ends on some of the embroidered esprits in the clothwork.
Soilage: Looks very clean.

Comments: A narrow border of Alençon with the réseau fin. The design is late 18th early 19th c, very light, meant to be ruffled. A few decorative cloth stitches alone the edge, and some picoted rings used as fillings. Overall it is quite simple. The horsehair appears to still be present along the lower picoted edge.
Condition:
Modifications: One end is cut, the other might be original. Engrelure attached. The length of this survivor is a little unusual. One join that I can see.
Damage: Some small holes in the mesh, a few pulls, a number of localized repairs primarily in the right part of the 3rd photo.
Soilage: A few localized brown spots.

Comments: A large handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace appliqued on machine tulle. Quite a light, naturalistic design – note the extensive use of halfstitch in the flowers. Some simple needlelace ring fillings. Nice raised edges on the motifs. No esprits in the ground. The pattern fills the space very well.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One small hole in fabric, a few pinholes in the tulle.

Comments: I don’t think this is a fan leaf – it doesn’t have the extra design on one end meant to go inside a guard stick. Duchesse de Bruxelles, a fairly elaborate design. No roses in the Point de Gaze inserts, just some rings and decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Nice raised work along the bobbinlace bands running inside the edge of the piece, which is also crossed by some feathery leaves. I like the scattered flowers in the inner part. Interesting design.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional broken element, very minor, some missing flower fillings. Point de Gaze looks very good.
Soilage: Seller cites a few minor stains. The piece doesn’t look quite as crisp as it might, especially on the inner edge, wonder if it has been washed. Not sure.

Comments: A Honiton dress front. Snails/slugs style, with fairly large areas of tally grid fillings. The brides are unusual, they look to be needlemade with ‘pinwheels’ done where 4 brides meet. But this doesn’t strictly conform to the style of Honiton Point. The design is roughly symmetric, but still with the scattered ‘flower garden’ effect. Note the row of simple loops along the neckline.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional broken bride and slight wear, one end of the neckline is a little loose.
Soilage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: I’m not sure what this is. It looks like a guipure, not a pieced lace. But I can’t really place the design. Maybe Swedish Vadstena? That is something where the little ‘islands’ in the brides are found, and the rather broad flowers, the gimp work, and the decorative tallies are also found in Vadstena. That’s my best guess.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites some loose threads, nothing really obvious.

Comments: A triangular shawl of applique on machine tulle. The applique is done with tambour stitch, so it might be a Belgian piece. It also looks like the applique material is another machine tulle. There are esprits in the ground that I can’t exactly tell how are done, but look embroidered. The design is a romantic floral pattern, very light looking due to the materials used.

Modifications: None
Damage: One small hole that I can see, perhaps others, rather minor.

Comments: A Duchesse bobbinlace with Point de Gaze mesh, generically known as Point d’Angleterre. This is not a particularly typical example, it tends to be much more finely done, and is one of the better late 19th century Belgian laces. It is a narrow scarf with fairly large motifs, although the design is rather innovative. A few large areas with decorate needlelace stitches and there is some raised work in the bobbinlace motifs. Overall it is quite an interesting piece.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few small breaks and tiny mends.
Soilage: Looks mostly clean, seller cites slight discoloration along inside edge. Not sure which edge is the inside one.

Comments: A semi-circular hat veil of bobbinlace applique on machine net. It does have a Honiton look with slightly larger rather plain motifs, and the very white, supple machine tulle that is often associated with English work. The small esprits appliqued onto net is seen in both English and Belgian work, although in Belgian they are often in the form of very small sprigs.
Condition:

Comments: A long rectangular shawl of needlelace application on machine net. The photos are a bit fuzzy, but I’m pretty sure it’s needlelace. The fillings are fairly simple, the whole thing depends on a good naturalistic design. Most of this is massed at the two ends, and there’s a wide border surrounding the whole piece. A nice looking piece.

Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites one small hole.

Comments: An oil painting on board of a lacemaker by Ernest Godfrinon. He was a member of the ‘Le Sillon’ movement in Belgium, which was a late 19th c return to Flemish realism. Very colorful, a lovely painting but rather damaged. I’m not a painting expert, so can’t say anything as to authenticity.

Comments: I’m glad to see this lacemaker’s lamp come from France, since there’s some dispute over where they are made. They do occasionally show up in England. The ones of this form tend to vary on the length of the neck, although the bulb and stand are usually consistent.
Condition:

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan, unmounted. Seller says it has been in the family for 90 years. Good romantic design, asymmetric, with raised petal roses. Raised petals have to be used carefully in fans so as not to impede opening and closing. A few areas are filled with elaborate ‘mode’ fillings, but overall the design itself is enough. Note the rather streaky, irregularly oriented mesh – not solely accounted for by a slightly thicker thread. I think it might be a later piece.
Condition:
Modifications: None – but perhaps removed from an original mount?
Damage: Some pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: It doesn’t look too crisp – wonder if it has been washed at some point in history.

Comments: A long piece of Cantù figural bobbinlace. It is so long, probably a table linen. It has 42 birds and 2 pairs of birds, nicely done. Very typical scrolling flowers and hooks of Cantù lace (which, by the way, is having their bicentennial lace conference from Oct 6-20, 2013). Interesting piece, nice design.
