This is a continuation from yesterday’s Alerts. There’s quite a pileup of good lace on Ebay during the holiday season.

Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 15:00:42 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments: A Brabant border, which looks terminated as part of the original work at both ends – something I haven’t seen before. The piece has the typical pattern of combination bride and mesh grounds, with large motifs. Probably mid 18th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Terminated on the ends, unusual.
Damage: A few broken brides.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos.

Size: 25″ x 109-110″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 16:02:34 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A rectangular shawl of a later 19th century lace which goes under the name Point de Milan. See the photo on the right which is a page from a contemporary catalog showing a bertha of the same type of lace. The quality of this kind of lace can vary widely. It is basically a Bruges-type pieced bobbinlace with needlelace mesh of various types. The photos on this one aren’t close enough to really examine the mesh, but I’ll speculate that is what it is. This shawl has a good design and precise work – a good example of the type.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a cream patina.

Starting Price: $24.99
Auction ends: Dec 10, 2013 22:34:30 PST
Offered by: Ebay seller ogop, Lincoln, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: A dress front of Brussels Duchesse. Hard to tell if the rose petals in the Point de Gaze inserts are raised. The form is a bit unusual; the lace standard for this type. A little raised work in the bobbinlace.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None – originally sewn on blue tissue – removed.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Pt. d. G. mesh looks good.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Size: pillow 47 x 44 x 19 cm, stand foot, 48 x 24 x 6 cm, 40 cm high
Starting Price: 95.00 EUR
Auction ends: Dec 11, 2013 20:14:56 Paris
Offered by: Ebay seller chez_jpk, Genouillac, France métropolitaine
Comments: A Belgian square pillow – not too unusual to see these, but the accompanying stand is rare. The pillow sits on a wedge-shaped base with a side drawer, and the pillow has a drawer at the back. Can’t tell if there’s another drawer at the bottom. The small removable insert can be transferred to the top, and gives the worker extra room for the bobbins at the end of a piece. The actual cover would be a heavy canvas, and the lacemaker would put another cover of whatever color was found convenient for working. The stand extends and is held in place by a metal pin.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: general wear. Foot and head of the stand scuffed, as expected. Overall wood condition appears good. Part of the blue cover is coming undone, but this is normally just pinned on.
Soilage: Age patina.

Comments: This seller is listing five lots of Eastern European lace, and when the seller is an Eastern European textile specialist, you pay attention. Attribution is a bit confusing – Czech, Russian, Italian, Hungarian, Croatian, Slovenian? I’ll speculate that at least in technique last two are Russian tape lace – bold good designs. Note the heavy thread down the center of the tapes in the last one, a Russian technique. The bottom two of the third listing also look Russian, the top one look more Czech or Slovenian.
The top one in the second listing looks Northern Italian, and the bottom is that vermicular stuff some people ascribe to Flanders. But it could be along the lines of Russian Yelts.
The first listing is quite interesting, since colored Eastern European laces don’t come up that often. Again, I’ll say Czech or Slovenia, although Russia is possible.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Probably all cut at the ends.
Damage: Basic general wear on first lot, a few holes and wear on the second. The rest look intact.

Comments: A blouse of Irish Crochet. The heavy raised ornaments and varied brides point toward a French origin. the front panel looks a little odd, as if this has been pieced together from various parts. The bloused waist is more meant to disguise the bust, and appears around 1900-1910.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: May have been pieced together.
Damage: A few broken brides in the back. Seller cites some unraveled stitches at the waist.

Comments: A large collar of embroidered net, perhaps Limerick. Good needlerun motifs, with some figural work of butterflies. Interesting pattern of very large and very small motifs.

Damage: A few pulls in the net. Occasional tiny hole.

Comments: A collar or dress front of application on machine net. The bobbinlace looks Belgian, beautifully worked, very clean and crisp. It reminds me of the more modern Withof lace, so I’m wondering if it comes from a Sluis background. A simple design, but the technique really makes this piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Looks unused. The neck tape extends beyond the ends of the lace a bit, so I’m wondering if this is a later addition.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges bertha – no Point de Gaze needlelace. There are a few simple needle-done fillings. Interesting, the motifs all go around the bertha facing the same way, which looks a little odd at the ends. Nothing serious. Conventional Duchesse motifs.
Provenance: “A local lace collection”

Comments: A point ground bobbinlace lappet scarf. I’m guessing a Lille piece – kind of a Beveren style. Note the kat stitch used on the ends, regular point ground in the connecting band. But the heavy outside border with the eyelets is something you also see in Beveren.
Provenance: “A local lace collection”

Provenance: None given.
Condition:
Modifications: One join, midway. One edge cut, the other might be original.

Comments: A border of late 18th C Burano. I wrote extensively on this kind of lace in the first review yesterday, so please see that for comments. It does have a rather odd shape, and as the seller suggests, could be part of a cap/lappet set. Although some of the motifs in the widest parts look cut off, so there might be some reassembly.
Provenance: None given.
Condition:
Modifications: One join, midway. Maybe some trimming.
Damage: Some pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: A wide border of Chantilly – really very wide, even for Chantilly. One end looks finished, but I think someone has sewn another piece on to make it look finished. Interesting pattern of bows, swags and flowers – no esprits in the upper ground. Salvaged from a ‘mourning garment’, wish there were more information on the garment which might help with dating.
Provenance: None given.
Condition:
Modifications: Salvaged – one end modified, the other cut. Long edges look intact.
Damage: Some pulls and pinholes in the mesh mostly near the top edge, one small tear at the left edge.

Comments: Please see my comments on the use of the term Point de Venise a Reseau from yesterday’s Ebay Alerts, a term which should never be used in connection with the widely varying 18th c flat grounded needlelaces. There really is no confusion at all on the origin of pieces like this, and it has been written about extensively by Belgian researchers (see Les Points a l’Aguille Belges by Mme Lucie Paulis, and works by Mme Risselin-Steenebrugen, with whom I had discussions on the subject around 1980). As much as I admire Pat Earnshaw, she is way off here (we talked extensively about this just after I returned from Belgium). The English writers like Jourdain and Powys writing around 1900 are just guessing, and subsequent research has really nailed this subject down. In fact it is the English writers who introduced this confusion, if they had consulted the conveniently nearby Belgian and Italian sources there would be no trouble.
This what we now call ‘flat grounded needlelace’, a Belgian piece, mid 18th c, typical Louis XIV design. A good example, just lacking some of the more common star-like fillings. It’s also not as rare as people are often left to believe, in fact there are several pieces very recently sold or just coming up for sale on Ebay. In fact we have 2 Italian pieces today and yesterday. I have a number of these in my collection, and it shows up occasionally at auction, especially in France. And along with the Point de Sedan made nearby, it is considered one of the finest laces ever made.
Provenance: From the estate of a prominent lace collector.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on one end, can’t see the other.
Damage: Two small slits in the reseau, a few pinholes, some damage to the engrelure, a minor issue.
Soilage: Looks very clean, a few fold lines, also minor.

Size: 8″ x 8 feet
Starting Price: $145.00

Comments: A long border of bobbin tape lace with 6-pointed star ground. Much like early Milanese, but the overall design, fillings, and edge treatments argue more for an Eastern European origin. It has some interesting woven ‘tally’ fillings, which you would also not see in Italian work.
Provenance: None given.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on one end, can’t see the other.
Damage: A few scattered holes.
Soilage: Some small brown spots. Light ivory in color.

Starting Price: 100.00 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller beakf, Neath, United Kingdom
Comments: The pillow is a large East Midlands bolster with 30 bobbins (unsure of their age), and an attached Torchon pattern. It would be packed tight with straw, and seems to be a little depressed in the working area – which is good. Shows it has been used. The horseshoe stand is exceptional, elaborately carved woodwork with minimal wear.
Provenance: None given.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Cloth on pillow faded in places with a few stains.
Soilage: Expected age patina.
