Comments: A narrow bertha of Bruges Bloemwerk Standard double picoted brides, conventional rose and scroll motifs.  A good standard piece; looks quite nice on the blue background.

Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 09, 2014 11:26:30 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller loisvc10, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A black silk Maltese triangular shawl. I can’t see the ends in the photo, but it does have a fairly typical large central roundel of guipure work.  I also can’t make out the mesh too well, but it looks like it might be a square grid of woven leaves. Two more roundels are at the start of the points, and the design itself is the usual combination of Maltese crosses and sun or flower motifs. Some nice sprays of guipure work throughout.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: There’s only one closeup, and if I look at the larger photo I seem to see some holes especially along the borders.
Soilage: Edges appear wrinkled.

Starting Price: $35.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Mar 09, 2014 12:18:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sugarbaby2011, MB, Canada
Comments: The seller is offering this lace by the yard, whether it is being cut or was cut in the past, I don’t know. It is an interesting design, quite narrow and good for ruffling.  The heavy black color probably means a Belgian product.
Provenance:  None cite
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends.
Damage: A few pulls in the mesh.
Soilage: Hard to tell with black lace, but looks OK.

http://tinyurl.com/pnolq5x 2 Antique Victorian Edwardian large panels of Honiton guipure lace
Size:  12″ x 34″ each
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 09, 2014 12:18:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: Two sections of a length of Honiton guipure, taken off a probable Edwardian dress. The lower 2/3rds of the pattern is a snails/slugs style, large motifs densely packed together.  The upper 1/3rd next to the engrelure is a puzzling match – a much more regimented design. There are cases in later Honiton where elements of machine-made tape were added, but in this case the section does look handmade, but it does look a little odd, a bit mechanical.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends. Engrelure added at the top.
Damage: Nothing obvious in the photos.
Soilage: Small brown stains throughout.

Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 09, 2014 12:25:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton border, removed from an Edwardian garment. Snails/slugs style and note the woven, picoted brides. That’s a little extra effort in a piece like this. Dense design with a fairly short repeat.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on ends. Engrelure added at the top.
Damage: A few minor breaks in the brides.
Soilage: Seller cites small areas of staining.

Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardener, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha with raised and pointed petal roses. Good design, filling a lot of the space. Nicely worked decorative ‘mode’ fillings, although not particularly varied. On average the design is better than usually seen in berthas.
Provenance:  A Lake Forest, Illinois estate.
Condition:
Modifications: None. Signs of some threads around the neckline from a previous attachment.
Damage: Some small holes and pinholes in the mesh throughout.
Soilage: Looks clean from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller nelliegardener, Evanston, Illinois, United States
Comments: Two similar pieces – it looks like a tape lace but the edges of the tapes and the fillings almost seem like Rosaline, and you do find the decorated tapes in that lace also. But it lacks the typical Rosaline motifs. The double plaited picoted brides remind me of Bruges techniques.   The first piece looks like it’s been assembled from two similar back-to-back borders, but looking closer, it appears to have been made that way. I’ll call it a long scarf. The second piece has many of the same design elements.
Provenance:  A Lake Forest, Illinois estate. 2nd one was in an exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, date unknown.
Condition:
Modifications: 1nd piece cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Both look clean.

Offered by: Ebay seller zachstarcher, Lakeville, Ohio, United States
Comments: An embroidered net handkerchief.  Tambour embroidery, suggesting Belgian origin.  I believe the box is original, not sure.  The design reminds me of certain kinds of Lille bobbinlace, and what I find interesting is the treatment of the center making the embroidery look like cloth.
Provenance:  Document says it was used at mother’s and daughter’s weddings, no date.

Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, United States
Comments: A Point d’Angleterre bertha, meaning bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze needle-made ground. This lace was made both in France and Belgium in the later 19th and early 20th c, and is usually high quality. This one has good design, and precise work, a little raised work in the bobbinlace, and a few decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Not as over-the-top as some pieces, but neatly done.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Upper part of right end (in the photo below) looks terminated a little strangely, as if some elements are missing.  Might have been cut.
Damage: A few minor holes in the mesh.
Soilage: Ivory color.

Offered by: Ebay seller lyndylew43, Melksham, United Kingdom
Comments: A scarf of blonde silk Maltese.Four strips sewn together, carefully matched along the long edges. Difficult to make out the end treatment. This is a common construction in Maltese meant to accommodate the narrow pillow. Typical pattern of crosses and a little guipure/leaf work. Actually, Maltese is the most often seen lace on Ebay, although one could argue that combined Duchesse de Bruxelles and Duchesse de Bruges would come in first, but I like to keep these separate. One wonders why Maltese has such staying power. There are photos of sailors making port in Malta and buying pieces right off the docks during WWII, so part of this must be a fortunate positioning for the tourist demand.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Upper part of
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Can’t see any discoloration.

Size:  14″ long
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Mar 11, 2014 13:04:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller baraud, Newton Abbot, United Kingdom
Comments: A fan with mother of pearl (abalone) sticks. monogram and original tassel.  The lace looks Belgian and as a general type seems to have gone under the name ‘Flandre’. I show a similar lace in bertha form from an old catalog below.  It is something that derived from the late 17th century Flemish laces, and eventually led to things like Rosaline.  You don’t often see it in fan form; I think it’s a bit too heavy for that. The design is also a bit crowded.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One guard stick repaired, other repairs to sticks. Lace looks intact.
Soilage: Lace has a few marks and glue residue.

Comments: A lappet scarf of Maltese silk, looks unusually white in the photos. Silk Maltese more often has a cream color. One center strip with another wrapped around the outer edge. The center strip flares out at the ends. Maltese crosses, mats of woven leaves, and a little guipure work.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A wide border of Chantilly in three long pieces. The design is a fairly short repeat of a romantic, dense design. Note the esprits in the upper ground.  Very long lengths of Chantilly aren’t unusual, but a piece this wide is not see too often.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: But on all ends. Cut into three pieces.  One join in one piece.
Damage: Small pinholes and holes throughout, one repair, at least one short racroc split. A little frayed in places along top edge.

Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Idaho, United States
Comments: The book has not yet been written properly identifying all the later 19th century Gros Point variations, although there was a conference at Retournac on the subject a few years ago. Possibilities are deliberate copies made in England, Burano, Vienna, and Point Colbert in France.  We don’t really have much to go on, except for Viennese pieces where there’s a documented collar in the V&A. We have a few postcards of Point Colbert work. This example has beautifully sculpted relief, and some nice fillings. Note the looped picots on the brides. Once you get past the beautiful relief, the motifs are a bit plain. The clothwork does not seem typical of Burano. I don’t think Belgium, and it doesn’t seem to have Viennese characteristics from known examples. So I’m thinking French, although Italy is still a distinct possibility.
Provenance:  Previously owned by Marjorie Fleishhacker
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: If you collect Chantilly, getting a piece with Ombre shading is top of the line. Here I think the manufacturer must have hit a winner because I have a piece of exactly the same design, almost as long in my own collection, and I’ve seen it for sale on other sites. A truly beautiful and elegant design.
Provenance:  None given.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut.
Damage: A few minor holes in the mesh. A little rough along top edge in at least one place.
Soilage: Looks OK, but hard to tell with black lace.

Size: Lace border 11″ deep, 13 to 14 feet long.
Starting Price: $150.00
Auction ends: Mar 12, 2014 20:12:10 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller oldwootsie, Napa, California, United States
Comments: A ‘put together’ ensemble wedding veil of Point de Gaze.  The deep Point de Gaze border is a high end market product with an elaborate romantic design, mid 19th c. Some very nice decorative ‘mode’ fillings. A little raised petal rose work, but mostly this is a flat piece. A triangular dress insert is attached to the headpiece and is of similar quality design – interesting, but a little hard to understand that particular design choice.
I normally don’t give an opinion here, but I would disassemble the entire piece and properly roll up the border for storage.
Provenance:  Sonoma valley estate of a 100 year old lady. Veil bought at I Magnims in the 1920s.  Reputedly made in Italy, but this is definitely a Belgian lace.  May have been assembled and marketed elsewhere.
Condition:
Modifications: A assembled piece. The insert looks intact.
Damage: Holes in the lace mesh, also in the tulle. One repair to the lace.
Soilage: A few brown spots.

Starting Price: $200.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Mar 13, 2014 19:54:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Ohio, United States
Comments: A figural Point de Paris border, could have been made in Belgium or France. Design seems to be a fox and bird in forest setting.  Figural Point de Paris isn’t uncommon, however to find it in a border like this is a little unusual. Usually figures were reserved for linen edgings where they could be displayed more obviously.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, looks unused. Maybe a pinhole or two.
Soilage: Light cream color.

Starting Price: $165.00
Auction ends: Mar 13, 2014 21:18:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller gadh, Ocala, Florida, United States
Comments: A bertha collar of Honiton guipure. The brides seem to be needle-made, buttonholed over, and there are a few spiders amongst the brides. That’s unusual, but not so extreme that I’d call it Honiton Point lace. The motifs are in the snails/slugs style and the design a little naive, but on the whole it has a bold presence.
Provenance:  None cited.

Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A fan of Duchesse, with a few simple needlelace fillings, Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks. You see a lot of this combination, but this one has a particularly nice design.  I very much like the big swirling leaves, with an almost vertical orientation very appropriate to a fan.

Comments: A border with Point de Paris ground, figures of deer. The square fillings are something you see occasionally in pottenkant designs.  I think it’s a  19th c piece, perhaps Dutch.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut. Top has fabric remnants. Can’t tell the condition of the top.

Comments: A triangular dress insert of Point de Gaze with matching cuffs. Note the decorative windows in the raised petal roses, sign of a better manufacturer.  Unusual to find such a complete set.  A careful technique, and I especially like the decorative clothwork.

Re the large quantity of Maltese lace coming onto the market; I live in Portsmouth Hampshire, a major naval port. I can confirm that virtually ALL sailors who put into Malta at ANY time will have been expected to bring something home to Mum, Wife etc. It could be stunning, or modest. By 1952 the work had deteriorated seriously. An elderly friend with a Maltese grandmother speaks of her making lace on Gozo. Some years ago the more modest pieces were coming into the antique shops via House Clearance firms here in Portsmouth. Pam Fontana.

Fascinating! Today you can get a diploma in lacemaking from the University of Malta. And, Consiglia Azzopardi will be teaching a class in Maltese lace at OIDFA in Adelaide in July.
