Comments: A pair of long fingerless gloves of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  I’ve never seen something like this before, so am hard pressed to say if it is the original form. But the pattern seems symmetric between the two, and I don’t see any obvious cutting. Unusual set.

Modifications: None?
Damage: Some loose connections to the bobbinlace and tiny holes in the Needlelace.  A little frayed in places.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish: It has that washed look with slightly shrunken motifs.

Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse border.  Note the isolated raised Point de Gaze petal roses as well as flatter inserts. The bobbinlace raised work is quite elaborate. Better design than often found.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut at both ends.
Damage: A little frayed along the top edge.
Soilage:  Overall age darkening with some spots of storage shadowing. I don’t think it’s quite as dark as the photos show.

Offered by: Ebay seller kent-rose, Garden of England, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton guipure handkerchief. Snails/slugs style, nicely done. Quite a dense design, very true to the English flower garden or hedge-row Honiton esthetic. Note the little ‘islands’ at the junction of brides. Not a lot of fillings. Wonderful inscription.
Provenance:  Inscribed “Mars Blackwell 1881”.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage:  Slightly off white. Might be some tiny brown spots, or maybe a trick of the photography.
Finish: Fold creases and slight wrinkling.

Comments: A Honiton guipure handkerchief.  Still in the snails/slugs style, but a little more advanced, with good masses of roses and leaves in the corners. Nice delicate work in the leadwork tally fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller kent-rose, Garden of England, United Kingdom
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse deep collar with raised rose petals in the Point de Gaze inserts.  Typical Romantic floral design, later 19th century. Some raised work in the bobbinlace. Good example of a shaped piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites ‘a few wee breaks in the threads’. A few gaps between the needle and bobbin lace boundaries.
Soilage:  Slight age discoloration.
Finish: Motifs a bit shrunken, as if washed.

Size: 11″ x 14″
Starting Price: $75.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Jun 03, 2014 12:26:05 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: This would have been part of a larger set, probably WWI vintage. It’s a ‘Pottenkant’ design with a flowerpot and swan motif. Pottenkant was more a style than a type of lace, and examples are found in laces spanning hundreds of years, mostly in the Netherlands region. Several pieces of this straight-edge rather blocky motif style have been seen on Ebay recently.
Provenance:  None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Slight break at lower left corner edge, minor.
Soilage:  Looks clean.
Finish: A few creases in the cloth.

Size: insert, 15″ long.  Cuffs: 3″ x 10″
Starting Price: $49.00
Auction ends: Jun 03, 2014 19:00:01 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller textiles2012, Hydes, Maryland, United States
Comments: A triangular insert and matching cuffs of a Venise lace.  Pieces like this are either Belgian, Austrian, Italian, or sometimes French, and we don’t well know how to tell them all apart. This set has some characteristics in common with Point de Gaze, so I’m guessing Belgian. The widely spaced buttonholed edges and circles of raised rings are Belgian techniques. Note also the decorative clothwork and fine thread.  Late 19th, early 20th c.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A little fraying on some edge loops.
Soilage: Seller says they have been cleaned, no details. Localized brown spots throughout. Upper left corner of the insert might need reattachment.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/ldbt3do ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 1700’s FINE FLEMISH LACE FLOUNCE
Size: 9.5″ x 38″ excluding band at top.
Starting Price: $295.00
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2014 06:49:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A short section of a moderately wide Flemish bobbinlace, could be around 1700.  Note the plaited ground and small tightly worked motifs in a vertical design. The techniques are starting to depart from the more obvious copies of Milanese lace of a slightly earlier time. There is a lot of this kind of thing around, and modern copies are always a possibility, however this one does have an early feel. Some of the work is more a tape lace with overlapping loops.
Provenance:  Part of a museum deaccession
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, band attached.  Often these were cut along the top, hard to tell here since there’s no obvious interruption in the design. Some closeups of the straight edge would help.
Damage: Occasional small frayed area, minor.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious wrinkles or creases.

151315053176   Sold for $295.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/nktdvdh ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 18THC.ARGENTAN NEEDLELACE FLOUNCE
Size: 4″ x ~ 92″
Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2014 07:15:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of late 18th c Alençon.  Typical design of brides tortillée or bouclée (would need better closeups to tell exactly)  on top with a more elaborate border with réseau fin at the bottom.  Not much clothwork here, it’s mostly decorative ‘mode’ fillings and a lot of cordonnet work. From what I can tell most of the horsehair picot base has been removed.  There’s no real way to tell the difference between Alençon and Argentan at this period, this kind of lace was made in both places. Alençon was by far the larger industry.
Provenance:  Part of a deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, narrow engrelure attached.
Damage: One small repair, a few small openings and pulls in the ground.
Soilage: ‘Creamy echru patina’, one dark storage spot.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 3.5″ x 44-45″
Starting Price: $95.00
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2014 07:49:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A Youghal needlelace border.  Good design with nicely done fillings that appear to be quite varied along the piece.  The little ‘spiderwebs’ are unusual for this lace. Note also the raised work on top of the open buttonhole clothwork, the ‘veined’ openwork patterns, and diamond windows n the solid parts. A lot going on for such a narrow piece.
Provenance:  Part of a museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Seller cites two small .5″ openings in the brides.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2014 08:50:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: This is a very recognizable lace, l’Aquila from the Abruzzi region in Italy. Very narrow meandering tape always in a densely worked symmetric design.  Doesn’t take many bobbins, and I’ve duplicated old pieces from museum collections.  Ricci places this lace in the 17th c, so 1650 isn’t a bad guess.  It’s a fairly heavy linen lace.
Provenance:  Part of a museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. One join.
Damage: A  little wear along both edges.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A few vertical creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of 19th c Point d’Angleterre, which is a fine Belgian bobbinlace with Point de Gaze ground and decorative needle-made fillings. The design on this piece is quite interesting, not at all what you usually find. The flowers and leaves rely on well worked cloth stitch with a minimum of fillings. No esprits, and the design fills the space almost completely – a very clean look. A higher-end market piece.
Provenance:  Part of a museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  Some kind of tape added at the top.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, unused.
Finish: A few slight vertical folds.

Comments: A small collar of Point de Gaze, raised petal roses.  Those raised petals are a bit ‘cup-shaped’, unusual. Some good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The design if fairly conventional.
Provenance:  Part of a museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Occasional small holes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Doesn’t lay quite flat.

Offered by: Ebay seller morwennadolls, Egg Harbor City, New Jersey, United States
Comments: A Chantilly lappet scarf with ombre shading.  The roses are amazing, the rest of the piece seems almost anti-climatic. But I’m nitpicking. This is a finely worked piece of a lovely design. Probably French.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Might be a small hole toward the lower inside edge on the right side in the photo.  Not enough closeups, but might be an occasional small hole in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $40.00
Auction ends: Jun 04, 2014 16:17:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: A handkerchief-sized piece of French Argentella, one of what we today call the ‘flat grounded needlelaces’. I has been cut from a larger piece into this shape. This was an Alençon innovation, probably around 1730. The lace itself is beautifully worked in very fine linen thread, one of the exceptional early 17th c needlelaces.  Note especially the ‘snowflake’ ground.  The work on this piece is exceptional, the condition is unfortunate.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Extensive adaptation of an earlier piece. Tatted edges a later addition.
Damage: Extensive, some attempt at repair. Especially serious in lower right corner.
Soilage: Perhaps white overall, might be a little brown staining in places.
Finish: Some fold creases.

Comments: A narrow scarf of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Dense, romantic design with good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. I especially like the gridwork in the curved pieces at the ends.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One small hole in mesh in the middle of the piece.
Soilage: Ecru color. Brown discoloration across the piece at the middle.

Comments: I can’t tell the exact shape of this piece, perhaps a mantilla? Muslin applique on machine net. The borders of the motifs are tamboured which would probably put this in Belgium.  Needle-run fillings stitches.  Good bold design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Shaped and darted around the neckline.
Damage: 2 larger holes and pinholes in the tulle.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief, and a Mexican Drawnwork handkerchief. Conventional motifs in the Duchesse with some raised work.  The drawnwork is beautifully done, and I think this is a very under-appreciated lace. These pieces were imported into the US from Mexico through Texas.
Provenance:  None cited.

Damage: A few small holes in the Duchesse.  Drawnwork looks OK.
Soilage: Duchesse, ecru color.  Drawnworklooks clean.

Comments: At first glance at all the Mayflower fillings, I’d say that the lace is English Bucks. Comments: A deep Irish Crochet collar which also has insets of heavily embroidered filet net. The type of elaborate raised work on the outer large flowers is typically a French technique, and that would agree with the use of the filet. Quti3e a fine ground, not a Rose of Sharon, but close.  Overall this is quite an assemblage of styles and techniques.  I think the design would be a bit more successful without the filet, but it is an interesting piece.
