Starting Price: $175.00
Auction ends: Aug 10, 2014 16:10:43 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A late 17th century Flemish piece, probably remade from a flounce to look like a set of lappets. Actual lappets of this style bobbinlace do exist, but with a much more symmetric design down their lengths. And the edging is a later addition. As Point de France needlelace developed in the later 17th century, other countries were quick to follow suite, and this is the low countries’ entry. Jean Bérain the Elder (1637-1711) is often associated with this style, as is his son, Jean Bérain the Younger. The took over for his father at the French court and worked in much the same style. this piece has a typical design, and note the early raised work on some motifs.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Reworked, probably from a flounce, with additional bobbin-made border added around ends and up one side. The border on the other side looks more in keeping with this style. Hard to say when the modification was done.
Damage: A little worn along the edges, occasional broken bride and tiny repair.
Soilage: Seller says it has been freshly washed, but gives no details.
Finish: Looks like a smooth old patina, edges are a bit wrinkled in places.

Comments: A fan of Duchesse de Bruges with Mother of Pearl (abalone) and bone sticks. The lace is difficult to see against the yellow background. Conventional motifs, no obvious raised work. There are some tiny needlelace accents.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None

Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze collar – it seems too small for a fan leaf, and the form isn’t quite right. Raised petal roses, and many decorative ‘mode’ fillings of about 3 different types – especially note the triangular ones in the various oval cartouches. Good design, a bit crowded, with excellent technique.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: I think I see a tiny bit of wear at the upper right inner corner, minor. Occasional frayed thread along the edges.
Soilage: Slightly greyish cream color.
Finish:Light creasing at center, probably from a fold. The ends and edges don’t always stay flat.

Comments: Two pieces of a narrow Chantilly border. The very black thread contrasts with the lighter ground – this may be a sign of Belgian work. The design is fairly simple with leaves alternating with a single rose, and a few honeycomb fillings. Minimal esprits, and none in the upper ground.
Provenance: None cited
Condition:
Modifications: No photos of the ends so can’t tell their conditions, but at least two must be cut.
Damage: One small break in the foot edge. Occasional pull and broken thread in the ground.
Soilage: Seems OK, but hard to tell with black lace.

Comments: A silk Ñanduti collar. I’ve seen a few of these, and they aren’t too common. Excellent motifs, tightly woven and the design appears to be mirror-symmetric. Parts are so dense that they almost look like Maltese lace.
Provenance: None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None. It is sewn to the purple tissue.
Damage: One break upper righ inner edge.

Comments: A Point de Gaze lappet scarf. Note the points on the ends, and also note the interesting lappet end motif of a small sprig against a diagonally striped ground. No raised work, and a number of decorative ‘mode’ fillings arranged in a radial pattern at the end – all the same kind. Nice design with a lot of presence.
Provenance: None cited
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites a few small holes in the mesh.
Soilage: A few small stains, a bit ‘dusty’ (lace sellers often use this term which is a bit vague, but sometimes refers to a slightly greyish appearance).

Comments: A late 17th, early 18th century Flemish flounce, perhaps a furnishing piece. It has the small delicate motifs seen in the ‘lappets’ above, with the symmetric design associated with Bérain. The photos aren’t close enough to really see the mesh, but it’s a plaited 6-sided design often used in this period. An impressive looking piece. The condition is so good that I have to remember that this type of lace was copied later on, however this one does have an early feel.
Provenance: Museum deaccession
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Tape has been added separately.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A semi-circular bonnet veil of Brussels bobbin and needle lace appliqued on machine net. The bobbin-made roses along the border alternate with needlelace leaves. Some delicate sprigs used as esprits, and some simple needle-made decorations in flower centers.
Provenance: Museum deaccession.

Comments: Wish there were more closeups, but I think this is a Lille border. The type of floral motifs, and the straight edge are often found in this lace. And note the woven tallies in the point ground, also characteristic.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A Point de Gaze collar with prominent ‘lapels’. No raised work and the design is quite dense. It has a few decorative needlelace rings used as fillings, but no elaborate ‘modes. Note the single looped picots at the edges, a sign of a now forgotten manufacturer. Interesting design with flower that you don’t typically see in PdG, and this is something aimed at a higher end market.
Note, an Armstrong catalog from ~1900 from Olney, Bucks, calls this form a ‘coat collar’.

Comments: A border of Herren Alençon – the name comes from the practice of using such lace for men’s lace cuffs. Later 18th c. Réseau fin at the lower edge, probably brides tortillée in the upper mesh. It has a variety of sprigs and dots used as esprits, and a rather thin line-drawn design along the header edge. Not much in the way of decorative ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends clearly to tell if they are cut.

Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end. One join.

Comments: An elaborate Carrickmacross applique rectangular shawl. Note the raised work in the flower centers along the edges, many raised rings, and the fine needle-run fillings. It does have a little cutwork in some of the applique, filled with picoted brides. Typical looped picot border. The design looks like ‘bleeding heart’ flowers, and this is not a typical Irish motif. This is a fairly elaborate piece for Carrickmacross applique.

Comments: An impressive Point de Gaze flounce, medium width, a high end market product. No raised work, but that’s not a problem. It has a number of decorate ‘mode’ fillings, not quite as complex as some examples I’ve seen. But this piece relies mainly on design for effect. The design is a highly romantic floral 2nd Empire product. Technically there’s a curious change of mesh size when going into the downward lines of flowers. So not only is this a beautiful piece, it’s an interesting technical study.

Comments: This one is a mystery. A largely plaited narrow scarf, and it does have the early Venetian plaited lace design look, as the seller notes. But the Venetians would not have done the woven leaves – that’s more a Genoese technique. And the center portion is pure 19th-20th century. I’ll guess a French Cluny variation.

Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl with elaborate floral design. The areas of half stitch are actually quite large. A few small areas of honeycomb filling, but not a lot – the design relies almost exclusively on the half-stitch motifs. As with many Chantilly pieces having large half-stitch areas, sometimes the tension in the work is a little off, and you see that here in a few places. But this is minor. I do wish there were a photo of the whole thing spread out, it’s a bit hard to judge the pattern.

Comments: A very unusual small Point de Gaze collar with matching cuffs, although I suspect the cuffs are made up from a longer border. The design of swags held up by bows is nice enough, but then there are the little multi-layered flowers with a heavy buttonhole ring in the center – I’ve never seen something like this before. I thought they might be machine-made additions, but staring closely, I’m pretty convinced they are hand-done. The outer borders also have the single looped picots, sign of better work from a now forgotten manufacturer.
