Size: 46″ x 70″
Starting Price: 225.00 GBP Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Sep 06, 2014 05:31:01 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller vickysilk, somerset, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll review this one even though it sold almost as soon as it was posted. It is a very wide border of Blonde de Caen sewn into a circle and probably used as a skirt. The photo has the piece doubled. Very typical large floral motifs with honeycomb filling. The technique is quite beautiful. Probably dates around 1840.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Joined into a circle, hard to tell the original form. I’m guessing it has been cut down from a larger veil.
Damage: Pinholes in the mesh, and note the raw upper edge.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Lays beautifully.

Comments: A narrow border of mid 18th c round hole Valenciennes. The design is such that you can match the pattern in a mirror image along it’s length – this was occasionally done to get a wider piece. The design is quite flat, no fillings, just a solid line-drawing pattern. Excellent even technique.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One join, cut and hemmed both ends
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Lays reasonably flat.

Comments: Another Valenciennes border, still quite a flat design and what looks like a round hole mesh. It has some simple decorative fillings. It does have a bit of a mechanical appearance and I had to stare at it quite some time to figure out what’s going on.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Occasional small hole and some pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: I think there might be some vertical fold lines, hard to tell since the photos don’t enlarge.

Comments: These boxed kits do come up for sale occasionally. This one is used, but reasonably complete. I doubt if the colored threads are original to the set. It is by Cotterel, and the bobbins off to the side have replaceable conical spools of thread – I can’t lay my hands on the examples in my own collection just now, but I’m pretty sure the head of the bobbin comes off so you can replace the thread cone.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, although I suspect some threads are not original to the piece.
Damage: It is used and has a little wear.

Comments: I thought these were interesting with the nicely done 3-d roses and leaves against the square mesh ground. Photos aren’t close enough to tell how the ground is made. They look like furnishing pieces, probably for a chair back. Although it’s hard to say exactly how they were used. They are curiosities, probably French.

Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One small hole near the center.
Soilage: Even, ecru color. Might be a faint red stain across the piece most noticeable in the 4th photo. Or it might be a trick of the light.

Comments: A delicate border of Lille, perhaps Note there is no gimp around the motifs, in fact I commented on a similar piece in a ‘lace of the month’ post a while ago http://tinyurl.com/af9umng (look at the bottom of the post). I have seen pieces like this attributed to French makers, so it is probably a Lille variation. It also has some interesting fillings.

Comments: This was spotted by a LaceNews reader, and neither of us could figure it out. It looks like a white cotton guipure, with heavy gimp overcast on around the centers of the motifs (not cut off very well). Probably a 20th c piece. The brides look plaited, and many just sewn into the motifs. There is a standup collar but I can’t tell how it is attached. Please comment if you have any ideas.

Comments: An Maltese lappet scarf, very white. Some nice guipure flower work at the along the length, and I like the complex ‘circular’ ground. Typical border of Maltese crosses with some woven leaves.

Modifications: There is a seam at the halfway point, I don’t think it’s original to the piece.

Comments: A triangular Chantilly shawl. The photos are a bit vague, wish there were more closeups on a less patterned background. The fillings look more like the 6 pointed star typical of Spain rather than strict honeycomb. The design is not particularly sophisticated, relying a lot on simple loops and holes.
