Comments: A bertha of an indeterminate bobbinlace guipure.  Perhaps French or Spanish. It does have a gimp, but few hints as to the exact place of manufacture. Bold designs, interesting piece.
Provenance:  From a local lace collection
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites 1 broken bride.
Soilage: Looks clean, can’t tell the exact color.
Finish: No creases or wrinkles. Heavy soft thread lays well.

Comments: A shawl collar with front lappets of Brussels Duchesse. Raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts.  Some needlelace decorative ‘mode’ fillings in bobbinlace flower centers.  No raised work in the Duchesse. The piece is nicely layered in three pieces to fall well on the figure.
Provenance:  None cited.

Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites some light age stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: Sep 14, 2014 10:09:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A reasonably wide border of Point de Gaze.  No raised work, and just a few simple decorative ‘mode’ fillings. This is one of those pieces that rely on a dense design with a short repeat – meant to be ruffled. Two different sizes of round ‘esprits’ in the ground.  I think I can see some different hands in the ground stitch sections – interesting.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Looks like there’s an engrelure added.
Damage: Some scattered openings in the mesh and small repairs.
Soilage: Seller cites some age stains.
Finish:  A little light wrinkling – a bit worn.

Comments: Three sections of a needlerun lace on machine net.  Interesting floral design that fills the space well with large buds used as esprits.  Hard to guess at a date. Might be Lierre.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut into three pieces.
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: A few dark stains.
Finish:  Some light creasing.

Comments: A border of what I’ll call Bruges Bloemwerk, although it does have a bit of a Sluis Duchesse feel.  Large motifs, some raised work in the bobbinlace, and some interesting square woven fillings. Good example of the type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Size: 66″ circumference, 5″ deep
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 14, 2014 11:22:00 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: In this day and age it is virtually impossible to tell the works of Alençon and Argentan apart in the mid 18th century. We do know that Argentan was the much smaller industry. Therefore we now tend to assign one particularly elaborate style to Argentan, which involves heavily buttonholed brides (the brides bouclée, which was made in three separate steps.) Réseau fin is used along the edges. Legend also has it that Argentan never used horsehair to make their picots.  I’d say these pieces to have that kind of style, but again, it is a modern convention with little historical fact behind the name. As far as what these are form, it does look like someone was trying to make up a ‘head’; lappets with a surrounding frill for a cap back – all made up from an original border. I don’t much like the continuity between the lower parts and the upper cut-out parts either.  The separate border does appear to match the other pieces.  It’s all a little strange.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Not exactly sure the original purpose, but part has been cut down.  Engrelure added.
Damage: Some repairs.
Soilage: Seller cites a ‘natural linen color’, with gentle darkening.
Finish: No creases

Starting Price: $395.00
Auction ends: Sep 14, 2014 16:17:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of Point de France needlelace. Note the symmetric rather ‘candelabra’ design  and the hexagonal picoted mesh.  Very fine raised cordonnets, and the lower border is carefully done.  All the signs point toward an earlier piece (late 17th c France), however you have to be very careful of this kind of lace. Copies were made in Italy and Ireland in later years – but this one does have an early feel.  Condition is almost a little too good.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if it they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A standard deep collar of Maltese cream silk.  Rather large woven leaves, which alternate with Maltese crosses around the outer edge, and with heart-shaped guipure in the middle section. The neckline is a narrow third section.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Some seam separations.
Soilage: Soiled along the neckline.  Seller cites ‘an odd mark’ here and there.

Starting Price: 0.99 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 15, 2014 13:36:58 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller beyondthetower, SOMERSET, United Kingdom
Comments: A ‘Sol’ needle-woven lace rectangle. Might be a shawl, I think this is a little too delicate to be used as a table runner.  Given the method of joining the motifs, I think it’s probably Ñanduti. Although there are only two different simple styles of roundels, which is unusual. Might be a later piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Some breaks along the edges.
Soilage: Seller cites some marks to the lace, I see one hole near one corner.
Finish:  Edges don’t like very flat, but that’s a general condition of this lace.

Comments: An Irish Crochet dress front.  Rose, harp, trefoil and pinwheel motifs, some fairly large, all densely packed together. Tightly worked, with some raised work (I almost wonder if this has been photographed upside down.) Picots look like crocheted loops.
Provenance:  None cited.

Auction ends: Sep 16, 2014 03:56 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller abfabs05, East Anglia, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of Muslin applique on machine net. Might be Carrickmacross – the edges of the motifs look overcast on, not tamboured like you find in Belgium.  But there isn’t much in the was of Irish iconography in the design and it lacks the looped or heavy straight picots so characteristic of this lace. The pattern is fairly simple with little variation in fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Some small holes and pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles. It has this beautifully draping white net that is often associated with England.

Size: 23″ x 94″
Starting Price: 120.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 16, 2014 10:46:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular shawl of Honiton applique on droschel ground – the ground is made in strips which the seller has measured at ~0.75″ wide.  I would tentatively agree with the Honiton attribution based on the large woven ‘leadwork’ filling areas in the flowers, and lack of needlelace fillings.  Beautiful delicate design of lilly of the valley and roses with a few leaves around the edges.  I have several of these shawls, and note the ‘soilage’ comments below. They all seem to have these issues, and I’ve never tried to clean one. I do have documentation on one shawl that cites it was purchased in London in 1830, and I think that’s a reasonable date for this kind of work. It doesn’t really have the ‘directoire’ look of earlier examples.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: One (maybe two) repair to the net.  Some loosening of the motifs.
Soilage: Mid to dark cream color.  Areas of pale brown age spotting in places.
Finish:  A little wrinkled, not bad at all.

Comments: A circular tablecloth of Italian figural Cantú bobbinlace with additional whitework embroidery. The figures are in Grecian robes and might represent a harvest celebration – note the nice raised work in some of them. Typical hook and flowerhead motifs in the bobbinlace.  I can’t tell where the embroidery was done.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Seller cites some small separations/holes and broken brides.

Comments: Tightly worked Irish Crochet collar – probably a dress front. From the various patterning of the brides, I guess this might be a French product, but difficult to tell for certain. The design is a bit haphazard, note the asymmetry along the neckline center front.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.

Auction ends: Sep 16, 2014 16:13:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: It’s not entirely clear, but I think the thread is silver metallic, and there’s a pink thread gimp surrounding all the tapes.  Russia is a possibility, but I’d more favor eastern Europe, like the Hungarian or Slovenian areas.  The symmetry of the tape design also recall some Italian work. The center cloth is missing.  There’s nothing to indicate that it is a particularly early piece, I’d guess later 19th or early 20th c.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications:  No center cloth.
Damage: Seller cites a few small openings.
Soilage: Minor tarnish.
Finish:  Vertical fold creases.

Comments: Scarf of Duchesse de Bruges.  I like the delicate transparency of this piece. It’s a little on the Bloemwerk side, with the single gimp, but I think there is some raised work in the ribbon motifs.  Beautiful technique and even with the fairly large motifs, the design is quite good.

Comments: Two cravat ends of a kind of Venetian coraline, more on the flat point side. Assuming they are shown rightside up, they are mirror images of each other, where the top left end matches the bottom right end. These two ends do look a little cut off, and note the looped edging are strongly picoted on these ends, but are a bit plainer on the other ends. Comments: ‘War Lace’ iconography in these mats – the Belgian Lion, English Unicorn, French Cockerel, Russian bear. Probably made with funding arranged by the CRB (and such items often have a metal tag with these initials – I don’t see it here), set up in WWI to offer support to the Belgian handmade lace industry.  These are standard patterns seen in this period.  Nicely made.

Note here the often triangular joining motifs.  The lower edge at the back is a separate piece.  And interesting Ñanduti piece – most of these were made after WWII and were made of cotton.

Size: Not given.
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: This bonnet looks to me like it is from the Alençon area.  I have one in my collection, without the lappets, the ‘beads and crystals’ and the braid.  But with the paper stiffening, and the outer frill layers are just a fine pleated cloth.  The lace at the back in both pieces is an embroidered net that was made in the area to imitate real Alençon lace.  The pleated lace in this piece looks like Point de Paris, and I have no idea what those black crystal things are.  I don’t know what someone had in mind here, but the basic pattern is very similar to mine but the elaborate decoration is unfamiliar.  I’d say it’s a later 20th c piece.

Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Ribbons are discolored.
Finish:  Looks like it lays OK.

Comments: Two sections of a border of bobbinlace application on machine net. I think it’s possible that it is a Honiton applique due to the large areas of leadwork woven tally fillings.  The style of the motifs (especially the feather-like fronds), the large sprigs used as esprits are also more English, as are the types of flowers used.  A beautiful piece but with unfortunate modifications.

Modifications:  Cut apart, cut along the top.
Damage: Occasional pinholes and pulls in the tulle.
Soilage: Not white, according to seller, with a number of age stains.

Comments: A handkerchief of Duchesse de Bruges.  Conventional pattern, with a little raised work in the motifs. Unpicoted irregular brides which look a bit weak in places. Nice pattern, but some of the execution is a bit off.

Comments: An English Beds shawl collar in three parts, which you see a lot in this lace.  The inner collar is a roughly ‘C’ shaped Beds guipure (note the large ovals), with another border of plaited beds along the neckline. What is unusual about this one is that the outer edge is a tape-lace with a lower plaited mesh. That’s not familiar from Beds, but it’s hard to think they would go outside the local area for this addition.  Interesting.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: A few frayed threads, one seam coming loose.
Soilage: A few rust marks.
Finish:  Looks good considering it’s a made-up piece.

Comments: A dress front and neckpiece of Burano needlelace.  There might have been some matching cuffs at one point.  Good symmetric design with decorative clothwork and some grid fillings. This deviates slightly from the typical pomegranate motifs, but still has a similar feeling.
Provenance:  From an estate sale.
Modifications:  No modifications, but neckpiece is reinforced with wire.
Damage: Occasional broken or frayed thread – very minor.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: This is an interesting mixed tape lace, not crochet. The woven braid is probably machine-made, and there are some simple needlelace fillings and brides.  It has an interestingly effective ‘punto in aria’ look to it.  Some of the leaf-shaped structures look like they were needle-made or at least finished with buttonhole stitches on the edges.  I don’t remember seeing anything like this before.  Looks like a 20th century product.
Provenance:  From an estate sale.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Seller cites one flaw that I can’t find – some closeup photos are fuzzy.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: An Irish Crochet bertha  a form that doesn’t come up very often. Tight work, with some interesting ball-like raised elements in some flowers. Also some raised rings in flower centers.  The work is well executed and the design tightly packed with the traditional 3 and 4 headed pinwheel motifs.  Picots look like crocheted loops.
Provenance:  From an estate sale.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: One separation along the neckline, occasional frayed or broken thread.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish:  No obvious crease or wrinkles, but it isn’t laying very evenly in the photo. I don’t think that’s a problem.

Comments: I think this is a Swiss Neuchâtel bobbinlace small shawl – it has a lot of the same design characteristics as that lace. A heavier, unrelieved cloth stitch in a dense, symmetric pattern, with lots of honeycomb fillings. Not a particularly elaborate design, but simply floral in nature. I have several examples in my own collection.  Not a lace that comes to the market very often, but it was made in larger pieces.
Provenance:  From an estate sale.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Some holes in the mesh at the ends of the piece, perhaps made in a fastening process.  Mesh is a bit irregular in places and I see a few pinholes, but nothing serious.
Soilage: Ivory color.
Finish:  No obvious creases, but a little wrinkled.
