Starting Price: 52.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2014 11:27:05 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton guipure collar. It’s a little short for a formal bertha, and the depth is a little bit more than most berthas. Snails/slugs style with turkey-tails around the outer edge.  Large areas of woven ‘leadwork’ tallies.  The unpicoted brides look bobbin-made, but photos aren’t close enough to tell definitely.  Good tight work, with a design that’s a little out of the ordinary.  I also wish there were a closeup of the neck edge – it looks a little atypical and might be a commercially available braid (many such braids were made by bobbinlace workers in Belgium).  A good example of this type of work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says it has an ‘antique’ look
Finish: No obvious creases orwrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/oww9odk A Stunning Early 19th Century Brussels Lace Bertha Collar.
Size: 152 cm long, 13 cm deep
Starting Price: 48.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2014 11:55:06 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of a Belgian lace generally known as Point de Milan.  Bobbin-made motifs somewhat in the Bruges Bloemwerk style with a fairly coarse needle-made ground, often combined with irregular plaited brides  (The type called ‘Old Flanders’ generally does not have the needle-made mesh).  This type of lace can vary a lot in quality, and was extensively made for table linens.  I’ve seen this exact pattern in a bertha before, although there’s no way of telling if it’s the same piece (http://tinyurl.com/7rkyebw, that piece was relisted and subsequently sold).  Good, bold design, well executed, and a nice example of this type of lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Neckline looks slightly worn.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

311104139290   Sold for 71.99 GBO, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/n4aduy9 ANTIQUE LACE- ALENCON LACE
Size: ~3.25″ x 40″
Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2014 12:05:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of later 18th c Alençon needlelace.  It’s of the ‘Herren Alençon’ type, meant for ruffles, often for men’s cuffs.  The design has large circles used as ‘esprits’ in the ground, with circles filled with decorative ‘mode’ stitches below.  Réseau tortillée above, réseau fin below. It’s been my experience that pieces of this rather plain style are a lot finer than they seem in photos.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if it they are cut. What looks like a join is probably part of the making process.
Damage: Some pulls and repairs in the ground, occasional small holes near the top and around the fillings.
Soilage: A few brown spots.
Finish: Can’t see creases, there is one folded point in the photo.  There are only 2 photos.

Size: 10.5″ long
Starting Price: 1,490.00 GBP
Auction ends: Sep 28, 2014 12:05:27 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller diggerlee, United Kingdom
Comments: A figural Chantilly fan with imitation tortoiseshell sticks.  The design includes birds perched in a hoop and a rather elaborate monogram of 2 back-to-back R’s and an E. Looks like the same monogram carved on the guard stick.  Good transparent design, a little conventional aside from the birds, minimal filling honeycomb stitches.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Lace loose from the sticks in a few places.  A few threads loose on the upper edge, maybe just not cut off well enough in the making.
Soilage: Nothing obvious, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Expected fan folds.

Comments: A collar remade from a mid 18th c Sedan needlelace.   The quality of the lace is excellent, especially the patterns in the large filling areas. See my piece on Sedan at http://tinyurl.com/bewrwkj. This is an impressive lace to find in any shape.
Provenance:  Museum deaccession
Condition:
Modifications: Remade from a larger piece.
Damage: Some holes a loose places in the clothwork.  A few broken brides.
Soilage: A few small brown spots.

Comments: This border looks like Lille with a point ground. Typical floral design with small woven squares in both the ground and some motif centers. Would like to see more closeups of the ground, but I’m reasonably sure it is Lille.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see both ends clearly.  There’s a double thread strung through the top.
Damage: Some pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage:  a bit beige in color.
Finish: Light wrinkling and some folds.

Comments: A embroidered round table linen with an Irish Crochet border. The lace is tightly worked, note the raised rings used as graphs and motif centers. The designs are a little abstract, but work very well with the square picoted mesh.  This was probably part of a larger set.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A Honiton deep collar with needle-made ground, sometimes called ‘Honiton Point’ lace.  Snails/sluggs style with a rather random arrangement ofmotifs, much like an English flower garden.  Note the various styles of ‘leadwork’ woven tallies used as fillings.  The technique is a little loose.
Provenance:  Bedford, New York estate
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few frayed brides, minor.
Soilage: A few localized red stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
