Starting Price: 25.00 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, East Anglia, United Kingdom
Comments: A white or cream silk blonde mantilla. French or Spanish, hard to tell given the design. The fillings are a honeycomb rather than the 6-pointed star favored in the Catalonian blondes. Floral design with a heavy border – technique is excellent, the design is not very elaborate, but effective.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few small holes, one larger damaged area in the upper right of the photo. Looks like there are a few repairs to the ground.
Soilage: The thread is a rather cream color in the photos, might be aging.
Finish: Some fold creases.
Sold for 70.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Comments: A silk Irish Crochet collar. IC in silk does come up occasionally, and the motifs are sometimes a little limited due to the difficulties with the thread. The rings edging this collar are very typical, and this is mirrored in the design of the grapes. There’s a little raised work in the flowers, but mainly the relief in a piece like this relies on the covered heavy base thread. Picots are crocheted loops.
Provenance: A white
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Some stains around the neck edge.
Finish: Some raised work a little folded – very minor. The type of thread doesn’t hold creases or wrinkles well, which is good.
Sold for 18.66 GBP, 2 bidders.

Comments: A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Typical floral design with a few needle made knots used as fillings – esprits in the open ground. Nicely sculpted border next to the cloth, and the motifs in the corners are well handled.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Tulle looks in good shape.
Soilage: Seller has laundered the piece but gives no details on the process.
Finish: Some rolled work veins aren’t straight, usually a sign of slight shrinkage from washing – who knows when this might have occurred. Light wrinkling in the cloth, probably along past fold lines.
Sold for 77.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Comments: A ‘Reticella Style’ (I like that terminology) border. The raised work incorporated reminds me of early Greek Reticellas, although the clothwork is a bit loosely done. I’m thinking it’s either a Greek or Cyprus product. These were often made as trimming for table or bed linens – but the cross motif in the points might be ecclesiastical, as the seller suggests. Good, even work, and the 1930’s date makes sense, although this kind of work is still being made today.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None, and seller says both ends are finished.
Damage: A localized loose area along the top edge – looks like there’s an attempted repair.
Soilage: A bit cream colored, might be just aging.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comment: This shawl collar does have a Beds feel, and Beds workers often made narrower collars with a shaped center piece surrounded by straight borders, usually ruffled. But it does look a little off the Beds track, especially with the center flower against a point ground – that’s a Le Puy characteristic, as is the elaborate ground. Beds-type trails and woven leaves are there, but you also see this in French pieces. And this particular shaped collar is a form seen in Le Puy. Jury’s out on this one. It is an impressive piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites possible small repairs along neck edge.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little wrinkled, minor.

Comment: A long border of Point de Gaze with an elegant, higher-end market design. No raised work, but it doesn’t need any. The flowers are quite naturalistic, and there are a variety of well-done decorative ‘mode’ fillings. It’s a little hard to see in the photos, but there seems to be widely spaced looped picots along the lower edge.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell how they are finished.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes throughout the mesh.
Soilage: Off white color
Finish: A little shrunken, perhaps from a past wash. Light wrinkling and some elements folded along the lower edge, minor.

Comment: A narrow scarf of Point d’Angleterre, fine bobbin-made motifs with a Point de Gaze ground and raised needle-made rings used as fillings. An interesting piece, and one of the better later 19th c Belgian laces. The design is quite dense and some of the motifs show nice originality.
Provenance: From an English estate.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the mesh, especially near the center.
Soilage: Seller cites some light storage discoloration, which I interpret as a few small brown stains, minor.
Finish: Some motifs a little shrunken, probably from a past wash. This doesn’t affect all motifs equally.

Comment: A fan of Duchesse de Bruxelles with carved bone sticks. No raised work in the nice Point de Gaze insert. Conventional Duchesse bobbin motifs with simple needle-made fillings. The overall design is a little crowded, but it works well.

Comment: A set of Alençon lappets joined at the center – they are quite long. Typical Louis XVI style with a heavier edge and light motifs throughout the rest of the mesh. Rèseau fin along the edges, and brides tortillèe in the center. This combination was made both in Alençon and Argentan, with the Argentan industry being far smaller. Some Argentan lacemakers say that horsehair was never used in Argentan lace, and I don’t see any sign of it here, at least not left in the work. A thinner black horsehair was generally used for the picots but withdrawn later. So it might be Argentan, but there’s really no way of telling. Recent ‘standards’ for identification coming mainly out of France attribute Argentan to a much more elaborate pattern.
Provenance: None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Joined with a zigzag seam in the center.
Damage: Some serious holes in the mesh throughout, although fairly localized near the upper centers of the lappets and toward the lower ends. Repairs evident.

Comment: An Irish Crochet dress front, although with the long points it would be used as a collar with the bib to the back. Interesting technique – everything seems to be built on the base thread with one single additional row. Gives it a tape-like appearance and some freedom in motif design. Lots of raised work.

Comment: A matched set of Honiton guipure cuffs. Picoted irregular brides. Woven tally leadwork fillings, but they aren’t very elaborate. The photos are a little overexposed so it’s difficult to see the stitch structure, but they look tightly woven. Mostly whole-stitch, little half-stitch. Dense design, snails/slugs style.

Comment: A fairly narrow, long Chantilly border. Note the extensive honeycomb fillings, also some ‘islands’ connected by bars in the lower circular spaces. And particularly note the finish to the upper edge – all this speaks to a better quality piece. Typical romantic 2nd empire design with one large rose hanging down into the edge scallops. A little asymmetry in the scallops gives the piece interest. Again, the darker black thread which might indicate Belgian manufacture.

Comment: A pair of Alençon lappets, ~3rd quarter 18th c. Very typical design concentrating on well-done decorative ‘mode’ fillings, with rather plain motifs. It’s rare that lace of this style/period survives in very good condition, this set has seen some wear but in general not too bad.

Comments: A fan of Brussels application on machine net. Beautiful asymmetric naturalistic design. This was not an easy piece to make with all the little feathery leaves.
