Starting Price: 92.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2014 07:57:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha with raised petal roses – multiple petals with ‘windows’ in the clothwork. These are signs of a higher end market piece.  Good naturalistic design and it has a few well done decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Nice design, although the technique is a little conventional, not much delicacy in some of the flowers.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage:Some small holes and pinholes in the mesh. One tear along the outer edge.
Soilage: Looks clean. Seller says it was freshly laundered and pressed, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: Some light creasing.

Starting Price: 32.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2014 08:42:04 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting square collar with ‘jabot’ ends.    I’ll call it Bruges Bloemwerk, although it’s a bit unusual. Very nicely done with quite a thick gimp.  The motifs are atypical, nicely done with tightly woven clothwork.  I especially like how small motifs are ‘suspended’ by webs of unpicoted brides. When I first saw it I thought it might be Withof, however this is too early a piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage:Some broken brides, one tear center back neckline, one separation along a jabot edge.
Soilage: Some localized light brown staining.  Seller says it was freshly laundered and pressed, but gives no details on the process.
Finish: light crease center back.

Comments: Two pieces of a border of 18th C Alençon, probably 3rd quarter. Rèseau fin with decorative ‘mode’ fillings, some in a grid pattern. Typical design of the period with varied but fairly plain design motifs; more importance was placed on the fillings.

Comments: A border of Point de Gaze, no raised petals in the roses.. Typical romantic 2nd Empire floral pattern.  A good design, fairly short repeat, and nicely done decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Esprits scattered in the ground. There’s a lot going on for a moderately narrow border. Wish there were more.

Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Although I almost think that some leaf sprays  and the stars look like needlerun or tambour – wish there were more closeups. But the bobbinlace applique that I can identify looks excellent, finely made with some very interesting fillings in the ovals along the border. I’m thinking some of these might be needlelace.  Overall quite an interesting piece.
Provenance:  Private sale from the contents of a country house, probably in Gloucestershire

Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure along the top.

Size: 1.9″ x 59″
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 12, 2014 12:41:40 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of pieced bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c.  Could be English Devon – the ground tends to follow the motifs rather than being strictly straight. Well done motifs, and I’m not going to say that the design isn’t as good as one finds in Brussels. I think English lace of this period needs some re-evaluation with this quality of technique, and the designs have evolved into a fairly recognizable style. I think they are just fine.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut at both ends.
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes, some loose brides. A little rough at the top in places.
Soilage: Some minor age discoloration, 2 heavy brown stains and a little light spotting.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: I can see what this wants to be.  It isn’t uncommon to have early 18th c lappets joined in a ‘V’ with what looks like a cap back, although it is unusual to find it with a bobbinlace with droschel ground.  (see the photo next to the listed piece, from my collection.  Usually you can clearly see where the joins were made.  And it is also unclear whether this joining was done in the 18th or 19th centuries.  I’ve got a feeling that is what this is, and the ‘lappets’ have been cut straight on the inner edges.  The cap piece and the lappets do seem to match in style, and note the extensive figural work.  I’m convinced that these are lappets because of the mirror image motifs, and looks at the rounded ends.  But I can’t find the join between the lappets and the headpiece. We could use more closeups of this area.Maybe around 1740, probably Brussels type.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Might be an original form, but lappets have been trimmed.
Damage: A number of small holes and pinholes throughout, with some repairs.
Soilage: Seller cites ecru color with some age discoloration, one small dark brown stain.
Finish: Lays pretty well.

Comments: A Point de Gaze bertha, rather complex in design and construction. Raised petal roses, and note the large areas of grid-like decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  As well as single fillings.  Nicely worked, impressive design.  We have several berthas of similar quality on Ebay lately.

Comments: A square of whitework monogrammed and floral embroidery with reticella cutouts and edging.  Might be an Aemilia Ars (and I’m saying that before I looked at the seller’s description) Italian product given the quality of the lacework, also might be from the Greek or Cypress area.  Delicate reticella work, quite pleasing.

Comments: An Irish Crochet table center, seller notes it is Breton.  That looks reasonable given the aright work and elaborate raised work. Comments: A linen border with Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata. This is the name given to this work in early pattern books. It is not Buratto, which is an embroidered leno weave net.  This is a very interesting example, more geometric than really early examples. It also doesn’t have the earlier three-part construction – a main border surrounded by two narrower ones. Threads are drawn out to form the square mesh, which is then overcast to secure. The remaining cloth forms the pattern. This one looks like it was drawn out of the original cloth; note the pulled thread hemstitching.  Fringe is a separate addition.  It’s unusual to find this type of work in an original cloth.  I’m thinking it’s a 19th c product.
A really interesting piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some holes in the mesh and in the upper linen.
Soilage: Age yellowing.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1,Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A linen cloth with cutout squares of needlelace and larger squares of needleweaving. I’d love to get this under the microscope. The reticella cutouts look like they might have a base made from the original linen cloth, which despite the figural work, takes them a little out of the Punto in Aria category. But the stitches look rather open – this might be a knotted stitch, or perhaps Flemish work.
What is much harder to understand is the border, and the larger squares, which appear to be needlewoven on a needle-made mesh. If this really is an early piece it might be the ‘Mezza Mandolina’ as shown in Leavey’s “Lace, A History”, plate 99. Needleweaving isn’t something you normally think of in early laces, but there are a few documented pieces in the OIDFA De Linnenkast publications that might point toward a slightly later Nederlands origin. I’m also bothered a bit by the buttonhole finish on the outside of the border.  And the condition is almost too good. But we have very little documentation on laces of this type. I’m not prepared to give an estimate of date without closer examination.

Damage: Seller cites a few breaks – I see some loose threads, but nothing very serious.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1,Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A triangular shawl or deep collar of mid 18th c Brabant bobbinlace. The term ‘Brabant’ has many meanings – it refers to region in Belgium, but also is often taken to mean lace made outside of the Brussels area. And the term is applied to a type of lace that is similar in concept to the contemporary Brussels pieced laces, but of  looser construction and more elementary design. It was easier to make, and often found in very wide flounces. This piece appears to have been adapted from a larger work, and contains both brides and the type of plaited ground often found in contemporary Flemish and Milanese laces. It has been nicely adapted to the shawl form.
Provenance:  NYC museum deaccession.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut from another piece.
Damage: Occasional broken mesh thread.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre fan, meaning bobbin and needle motifs with a Point de Gaze ground.  The extents of the Point de Gaze motifs makes it a little unusual. No decorative ‘mode’ fillings, just a nice floral design.  Elaborately carved Mother of Pearl (abalone) sticks.

Comments: A wedding veil of bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. The raised Point de Gaze roses are unusual in applique – stuffing the petals with cotton is not. I’ve seen this before, and it was usually done during manufacture to give the flowers more shape.
I’m a bit confused by some leaves n the piece, some are obviously bobbinlace, some look a bit more like the machine tapes you find in Princesse lace. The construction of the whole object is also unusual. I’ve never seen an oval veil with this center rectangular piece. Effective, but it’s more common to decorate only the edges of a large piece of tulle with massed flowers around the end of the train, and something shaped for the headpiece.

Comments: I like this piece. Nothing elaborate technically, but a good bold design in a small piece. It looks like it’s made from a heavy linen thread, or maybe heavy cotton. The little ‘islands’ among the brides is throwing me, this is often a Belgian technique around Bruges.  But I’m more guessing it’s a french piece.

Comments: A Honiton collar, snails/slugs style, nicely made. I think the mesh is needlemade, which puts this in the Honiton Point category. Good areas of woven leadwork tallies, although not too extensive.  The piece has a very nice presence.

Comments: A Beds dress front with attached choker collar.  Beds normally doesn’t have a point ground, but the inserts with woven leaves are more typical. As are the looped edge plaiting.  An unusual design.

Comments: A Brussels or Devon pieced bobbinlace border with droschel ground. I’m leaning more toward Brussels – mid 18th c.  Good design, and note the decorations in the clothwork, and fairly elaborate fillings combined with bride ground.
Provenance:  the Hext textile collection, write the seller for details.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if cut, one is in a circle. There seems to be a wider piece added on to the end of the other.  Engrelure added at top.
Damage: A few pinholes and pulls in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light creasing in places.

Comments: Three segments of  a probable Devon pieced bobbinlace with droschel ground, mid 18th c. There is one join, and the area to the right of this seems to have been replaced with another piece of lace – the droschel is oriented in a different direction and made of a thinner thread.
Provenance:  the Hext textile collection, write the seller for details.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut at ends, engrelure added. One join. Engrelure at top.
Damage: Expected pulls and pinholes.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 1.75″ x 50″
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP

Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A final border of a pieced bobbinlace with droschel ground
Provenance:  the Hext textile collection, write the seller for details.  This one is a bit more complex than the ones in the previous reviews, with some partridge eye ground, and some decoration to the clothwork. Yet the ground tends to closely follow the motif outlines, which is more Devon-like. But the raised work is a little more carefully done than you generally see in Devon of this period. I do think the design is more on the English than Flemish side.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.   One join.
Damage: Small holes, pinholes and general wear thoughout.
Soilage: Creamy color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
