Auction ends: Feb 1, 2015, 7:01 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pearll, Rockville Centre, New York, United States
Comments: This seller has recently had some excellent Ñanduti laces. This one is a square, probably a table piece.  The extensive ground in the center is a sign of Ñanduti work, although the piece does not have the typical palm leaf border.  Probably a 1950’s piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Hard to tell the color, but looks clean.
Finish: A few small folds around the edges, minor.

Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: I think this is Beds, but not a very typical design. The outside plaited edge is typical, as are the use of woven leaves.  Quite an interesting design, almost looks like a tape lace. Note the edge against the cloth is beautifully done.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One small frayed and torn spot.
Soilage: Seller cites some small stains on the join to the cloth – they look a faint yellow.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases

Comments: Two similar early plaited bobbinlace insertions from the same seller.  Lace like this is shown in Ricci’s “Old Italian Lace” in the section on Venetian bobbinlaces. Ricci makes a connection with these designs and Le Pompe of 1557, although not exact. There are strong similarities in the patterns with these pieces (for example, plate no. 82 in Ricci for the second one, although the Ebay piece lacks the raised work).  Three similar pieces but with the raised work came up on Ebay  in November 2013 (see http://tinyurl.com/mzezu5b).  Unfortunately Ricci doesn’t give dimensions for the examples in her book.  Very difficult to definitively assign early dates to laces like this, and they were extensively copied even into the 20th century. Later examples tend to be more loosely woven and larger in size, so I’m a little bothered by the 5″ width of the first piece. Both have a very tight woven appearance often associated with early pieces. Altogether both are quite interesting.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Ends cut on both.
Damage: Ends secured but frayed.  One damaged area near the top end of the first piece. Second piece seems intact.
Soilage: Both ecru color with a little localized light brown staining vixible in the second piece.
Finish: Vertical fold creases in both.

Starting Price: $19.00
Auction ends: Feb 2, 2015, 8:46 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A long, narrow Honiton point collar. Snails/slugs style, and the design is roughly, but not entirely symmetric. Needle-made ground.  It is nicely defined by the separate openwork edge – simple edgings like these were extensively made for edging purposes. The leadworks in the edgings match the fillings in some leaves near the points of the collar.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few frayed and brokenthreads.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Ebay seller jamiexmas*, Southbridge, Massachusetts, United States
Comments: These are similar in form so I’ll put them together. They are sometimes called “coat collars”, although the first one seems to have lost the separate neckpiece. The first is Duchesse de Bruxelles with raised petals in the Point de Gaze roses. Note the nice raised work in the bobbinlace flowers toward the points, and also the mirror symmetry of the design which distinguishes these from regular triangular inserts.  The second is Honiton point, meaning Honiton with a needle-made ground.  A little snails/slugs, but breaking away a bit into more naturalistic flowers, leaves and thistles.  Nicely done woven tally leadworks.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None on either.
Damage: Nothing obvious on the first, PdG mesh looks good.  One missing leadwork filling in one flower on the Honiton, and a few loose stitches, minor.
Soilage: Occasional brown spot in both.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles on the first, a little wrinkling on edges in the second.

Comments: A border of Alençon with the simple Directoire look of the last years of the 18th c. A very light, open design with the simple twisted and overcast Alençon rèseau.  Decorative ‘mode’ fillings are simple and small, in keeping with the design.  Note the diamond-shaped ‘esprits’ in the ground.

Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see edges to tell if they are cut.

Size: ~22″ diameter.
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve.
Auction ends: Feb 2, 2015, 3:04 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A monogrammed Point de Gaze parasol cover with heraldic elements and naturalistic floral design. A high end market piece, probably for a wedding trousseau. There is a lot of raised work here, but it’s a bit outside of the traditional raised rose petal technique of conventional Point de Gaze. Here elements have been appliqued more along the bottoms of the flowers, and also attached to the sides of the heraldic motifs. Interesting, there aren’t a lot of decorative ‘mode’ fillings. But then again, the whole piece is interesting. Altogether it’s a little more solid looking than most Point de Gaze.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Seller cites a few small age spots.
Finish: A few creases – hard to tell if it was ever mounted, but the pinholes do speak to some kind of use.

Comments: A small Point de Gaze collar with interesting pointed ends. I don’t see any bobbinlace in this piece.  Nice design, and some good areas of heavy rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings in a grid pattern.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One repair near the center back.
Soilage: Hard to tell with the light background. but I think it’s a little beige.

Comments: A long, wide Chantilly flounce. The main element at the top is a ‘fountain’ of leaves, and there’s more floral and strapwork in the middle and bottom. No esprits in the ground.  Flounces of Chantilly this long aren’t unusual, but the width is more exceptional.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.

Auction ends: Feb 3, 2015, 11:35 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller jaruk, Worcester, United Kingdom
Comments: A high relief Gros Point border, beautiful technique, like carved ivory. To me this seems an earlier piece since there isn’t too much decoration in the clothwork, and the borders are very highly sculpted.  As with most pieces of this period (mid 17th c), this one has been cut apart and reassembled for ‘modern’ use. Often you can’t be certain that the same piece was used throughout, or that the manufacture was all under the same direction.  Here many of the brides do look original. I find this a very beautiful piece – and I’m of the firm opinion that there is little about needlelace that you can’t learn by studying a piece of Gros Point.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Reworked. Join in the center.
Damage: Basically good shape for the age.
Soilage: Age patina, nothing serious.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A narrow border of Argentan or Alençon with brides bouclée. Good, delicate design with a few simple decorative ‘mode’ fillings along the border.  Quite a solid piece of lace, later 18th c.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other. Engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional stray thread and pinhole.  I think the ‘join’ might be part of the manufacturing process.

Comments: A long border of Point de Gaze with provenance. Little hard to tell from the photos, but I don’t think there’s any raised work.  Note the decorative ‘mode’ fillings in fairly large grids. Good naturalistic design.
Provenance:  Acquired by seller’s grandmother around the time she was married in 1910.
Condition:
Modifications: Both ends look cut.

Comments: A long, reasonably wide mid 19th c border of Alençon in the 2nd Empire romantic style.  A high-end market piece; these don’t come up very often on Ebay, although you do see them more at the Drouot auctions in Paris. The design is a repeat of a basket with flowers, swags decorated with elaborate ‘mode’ fillings below. No esprits.  The design is rather dense, but in general I’ve found that pieces like this photograph a bit heavier than they actually are.  An excellent example.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the mesh. Seller cites a few small openings and a few tiny repairs, which I’m having trouble finding.

Comments: A bertha of a lace that around 1900 went by the name Point de Milan.  It’s a pieced bobbinlace with a needlemade ground. It wasn’t too difficult to make, and I think most was made in Belgium, although Italy is a possibility. Often used for table linens. This one is quite nice technique, and two different grounds, one finer than the other.  There’s a little decoration in the clothwork, but not much.

Offered by: Ebay seller snuggles, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: This is a pillow by “The Lacemaker”, and probably the only late 20th c maker manufacturing the traditional Belgian cushion with the sloping top – I could never figure out how to exactly describe it. I have one, it’s great.  The pillows on mine are covered Styrofoam. There should be three short inserts (much like you find in Switzerland) and one long one. One drawer in the back, but it doesn’t have the shorter section that you can move from the top to the bottom to give the bobbins more room. You still have to take out the pins and transfer a straight pattern from the bottom to the top.

Comments: A Point de Gaze fan with spaces to insert painted silk gauze motifs. I think this is original. No raised work in the lace, and it has a number of well-done decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Good naturalistic design, and the sticks are elaborately carved. Tassel is intact. The piece appears to have been pinned to the red cloth in the frame with straight pins. Comments: A 17th c needlelace remade into a deep collar. If I look at this very closely, two things strike me – the looped, picoted ornaments on the brides, and the slightly open, grainy clothwork in the motifs. The last might be from knotted stitches used in early English needlelace, and you also find these kinds of brides in that lace. Would like to get this under the microscope.

Comments: A Venise needlelace border – might be Belgian. Note the line of rings which you also find in Point de Gaze. I can’t see details of the outlines, but I suspect they are widely spaced buttonholed, also a Belgian characteristic. Excellent decorative clothwork used as fillings.

Comments: A Belgian flounce with needle-made twisted/overcast ground and needle-made fillings that you also see in Point de Gaze.  Catalogs from around 1900 call this Point de Flandre, although it usually does not include the needle-made ground. Today it sometimes goes under the name ‘Old Flanders’. The bobbinlace designs have a thick gimp and occasional rolled ribs, and the windows in the clothwork and general design are reminiscent of late 17th Century Flanders lace, especially the trefoil flower heads and scalloped motif edges.  Excellent example of the type.

Comments: Collecting lantern slides is an acquired taste, afterall, what do you do with them? This colored one is unusual, as is the fact that it comes from Switzerland. But they do give information that you don’t normally find in postcards – look at the child’s pillow, much like “The Lacemaker” pillow reviewed above.  We also don’t have much information on stands. And overall it’s a good social commentary.
