http://tinyurl.com/nj5c9ku An Exquisite Length Of Antique Maltese Lace
Size: 8.5 cm x 235 cm
Starting Price: 28.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 22, 2015 9:40 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A cream silk Maltese bobbinlace border.  The design looks very much like the ‘Rose of England’ pattern first made for the marriage of the Duchess of York, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon), and later made to appeal to English visitors.  See the documented example in my collection, righthand photo below.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious form the photos.
Soilage: Seller cites a few age marks.
Finish:  No obvious creases or wrinkles.

http://tinyurl.com/p4ljqrs Two Elegant Lengths of Antique Lille Lace
Size: 6 cm x 315 cm, 4.5 cm x 250 cm
Starting Price: 42.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 22, 2015 10:19 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: There are two laces in this listing, and I think the top one in the photo is an embroidered machine net.  The second looks like a point ground lace, difficult to determine origin.  The Lille/Arras/Beveran classes of point ground bobbinlace are quite varied in design and origin, often confused with laces like Bucks and Tønder.  This example looks more like an Arras lace with the rather thin elements in the motifs.  The best reference I’ve found on the subject is Emil Hannover “Tønderske Kniplinger”, which despite the name, has an amazing number of photographs of all the variations in point ground laces.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  One join in the upper lace.
Damage: Lower lace looks OK from the photos.  Damage to the food edge in sections, and small holes throughout in the upper lace.
Soilage: Seller cites a few age marks in the upper peice.
Finish: Light vertical fold creases.

Size: 6 cm x 308 cm
Starting Price: 62.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 22, 2015 10:19 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Alençon needlelace. Rèseau fin, with a sparse, simple design typical of the later 18th century.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  One join in the upper lace.
Damage: Seller cites some holes and a few repairs.
Soilage: Looks a little beige from the photos.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles, but I can’t see the whole thing.

311294766866   Sold for 80.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kgxfgjx A Large Antique Honiton Black Applique Shawl circa 1860/80
Size: 150 cm x 305 cm
Starting Price: 38.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 22, 2015 11:40 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A triangular black shawl of Honiton applique on machine net. Finely done motifs especially in the leaves. Large sprigs used as ‘esprits. Most of the effect seems to be concentrated at the lower point with flower spray, and there’s a thin border around the rest of the piece – altogether a rather open design. It’s difficult to see how this all goes together, I think the ends might also have flower sprays, but not enough photos to tell.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: One repair 14 cm long – this might be the line in the .  Localized small holes and pinholes throughout.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: I think there’s some light wrinkling, minor.

Auction ends: February 22, 2015 12:03 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller breckcarter, Markham, ON, Canada
Comments: A short section of a wide Honiton flounce. Snails/slugs style, nicely arrange. I especially like the little circles in the roughly square-mesh picoted brides, and the extensive areas of woven tally leadwork. Note the pre-made tape zigzagging just below the top edge, you see this a lot in this style of Honiton.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Cut both ends.
Damage: Seller cites 4 broken brides.
Soilage: Small area of yellowing along top edge.  “Faint fragrance scent.”
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller VANYE90, United Kingdom
Comments: There are a number of good Maltese pieces this week. These two are of the same pattern, a heart shaped trail with scalloped edge, Maltese cross in the center of each of the drops. This motif is often found in Maltese. The work in the first one seems a little thin, the second one is done a little more densely.  Hard to tell, but I don’t think they sections of the same piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Cut both ends on both.
Damage: #1 seller cites minor wear with a few little breaks.
#2, a few small breaks.
Soilage: I think I see a few faint brown stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: ~9.5″ x 50″
Starting Price: 4.99 GBP
Auction ends: February 22, 2015 12:41 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller VANYE90, United Kingdom
Comments: A wide Maltese flounce, excellent technique, with some interesting guipure work.  You don’t often see the little gupuire flowers in Maltese. More often a flower is depicted as a circular rayed motif with woven leaves as petals – there are plenty of those here. The upper ground with woven leaves and the ‘X’ in each grid is a sign of better quality work.  Similar to the previous pieces, it is an elaboration on the heart shaped undulating design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Cut both ends on both.
Damage: A few breaks, especially along the header.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light vertical fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller art*heart, Petaluma, California, United States
Comments: A narrow scarf of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net.  Good, precise work with delicate motifs and extensive decorative ‘mode’ needle-made fillings.  Little raised work in the bobbinlace, a little on the Bruges side.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, although seller cites a little pulling in the tulle.
Soilage: Seller cites 6 faint brown spots.
Finish: Vertical fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller flanagan-laneantiques, Seattle, Washington, United States
Comments: A small Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks.  No raised work.  Some good areas of extensive decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Design is a little simple, but a bit more naturalistic than is usually found, and the light design is very good for the form.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Mesh looks in good shape.
Soilage: A few small brown spots, some, but not all coordinated with the sticks.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: I think this might be Swedish Vadstena lace. The gimp around some elements, the small narrow leaves, all are pointing in this direction.  Plus it just doesn’t look like anything else.  But there are a few things throwing me; no ‘islands’ in the brides, and the plaited edge is not typical. But not too far off.
2/22/15 Got a note saying that this might be a rare type of Beds. I don’t have further details.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos that I can see.
Soilage: Some faint marks.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases.

Comments: A bertha-type collar of muslin applique on machine net.  The photos aren’t really close enough, but I think the motifs are attached with chain stitch. Which would put this more in the Belgian arena. No fillings that I can see. Excellent design, nicely worked.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Some tiny holes in the tulle.
Soilage: Ivory color with some light brown spots.

Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 23, 2015 12:21 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of silk Blonde, probably Blonde de Caen. Quite an elegant, light design.  This is a lace that doesn’t survive well, and pieces of this quality are unusual.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if it is cut.
Damage: Seller says it was found rolled up with marks on the exposed portion. Some small holes in the mesh.  Little hard to tell from the photos, some areas seem very good.
Soilage: A little spotting.
Finish: Distortions to the exposed areas, a little wrinkled in places.

Size: ~ 18 cm x 28 cm
Starting Price: 9.00 GBP
Auction ends: February 23, 2015 12:28 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller hedgehogpear, BN8, United Kingdom
Comments: This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a bobbinlace tea cosy, in fact another that sold on Ebay in May of 2011 is shown next to this one.  That one was made of linen, and I think the current one is also.  I’d love to think these are Beds, but they are more this ‘indeterminate guipure’ that is so hard to identify.  Possibly Maltese, that might be expected given their important English market.
I’m pretty sure this would be the outer decoration to a more solid cover.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: A little spotting.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A black probably silk hat veil of embroidered (needlerun) machine net. There are a few needlerun fillings, but quite small.  Remarkable provenance. Quite a beautiful piece with ‘Blonde-de-Caen design of the heavy lower border, large sprigs in the ground, and a narrow border on the other three sides.  Excellent technique and design.
Provenance:  Comes with a note dated March 11, 1878, signed Caroline M. Hitchcock, “This veil belonged to my mother (Mrs. Hannah Phripp Sleight).
Purchased from the attic of Kingston Hall, Somerset County on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.  Tulle looks in good shape.

Comments: A Chantilly fallcap – note the obvious racroc line running horizontally along the center.  From the way the roses are handled, and the density of the design, I’m guessing this is a Belgian piece.
Provenance:  Purchased from the attic of Kingston Hall, Somerset County on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh. Occasional loose thread along the border.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.

Comments: Two Chantilly lappet scarves with a little Ombre shading. That, along with the dots used as decoration in both make me think they were by the same manufacturer. These are quite narrow, and fairly simple designs.
Provenance:  Purchased from the attic of Kingston Hall, Somerset County on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.
Modifications:  One join that does not look original in the upper one.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos other than an occasional stray thread on the outer border.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or winkles.

Comments: A semi-circular Chantilly hat veil. A narrow border combined with simple esprits in the ground.  The top border is meant to string a ribbon through.  Good, careful work, hard to tell the place of manufacture.
Provenance:  Purchased from the attic of Kingston Hall, Somerset County on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.

February 23, 2015 7:34 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller estateauctionsinc, Seaford, Delaware, United States
Comments: Two Chantilly triangular shawls, likely from the same manufacturer. Very little honeycomb fillings on either – they mainly rely on large areas of half stitch with thin veining.  The slightly grey color probably means French manufacture. The first has a more free-form design. The second is a typical Romantic design with massed flowers in an oval center, with that designed echoed down the sides.
Provenance:  Purchased from the attic of Kingston Hall, Somerset County on Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.  Both accompanied by a retailer’s card, MME CHOLLET/ ROBES/ Fournisseur Breveteede L.A.J. Madame /La Princefse D’Oldenbourg / 10 Rue Meuse /St. Augustin, 10 / Paris / ENGLISH SPOKEN.
The Princess might be Duchess Sophia Charlotte of Oldenburg (1879-1964).
Modifications:  None
Damage: First: Occasional pinholes in the mesh, one frayed spot along the edge in the first one.
Second: Some splits along the edges, small holes and pinholes in both the mesh and halfstitch throughout. a few frayed threads along the edges.  One definite short racroc split. Most of these issues are minor.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Fold creases.

Comments: I think this is a Point d’Angleterre Fan with carved Mother of Pearl sticks. Not enough closeups of the lace to make a good evaluation, although the lace itself appears to be a high-end market piece.  Interesting design, good needle-made fillings, excellent technique. Comes with a Tiffany box.

Comments: This auction doesn’t end for quite a while, but this is a high-end market piece and should be looked at as soon as possible.  A rectangular shawl of Duchesse de Bruxelles. Note the elaborate flowerpot design n the Point de Gaze inserts with raised-petal roses. Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings throughout, and also some raised work in the bobbinlace. The bobbin motifs do have a rather flat appearance, more on the Bruges side.  The overall design is very dense, but holds up well.

Modifications:  None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos – it all looks intact.
Soilage: Some isolated small brown spots.
Finish: No obvious crease or wrinkles.
