Comments: A Burano needlelace bertha. These were made in the late 19th and early 20th c. This has a good floral design, not the usual pomegranate motif.  Well done decorative clothwork, and a few areas of picoted bride fillings.  I’ve seen three other berthas come up for sale on Ebay since I’ve been doing the Ebay Alerts, so this is a fairly rare form.

Comments: A wide needlelace border in Venise style. It doesn’t look familiar, and they photos aren’t close enough to see some of the telltail stitch structure.  The design is characterized by a lot of 6 petaled flowers with raised ring centers, but no raised edges. There is some raised work a little sculptured. Single small rings are used as fillings, and there are raised rings used as ‘islands’ in the brides. There is also a line of open stitches along the outer curve before the raised edges. So what is it? Belgian, Irish, French, or Italian, or something else?  I’m leaning toward Belgium, late 19th century. But very unsure.
Provenance:  Note attached, “Ivory Point, Mrs. C. D. Armstrong”. The term ‘ivory point’ sometimes refers to Gros Point being like carved ivory.  I do not think this is the pseudonym of Harry Armstrong, who often called himself ‘Mrs Nelly Armstrong’.
Modifications:  Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A wide, long Chantilly flounce, one of the nicer ones that’s come up recently.  Long, wide Chantilly borders are not unusual, although most are around 12″ wide.  Typical Romantic 2nd Empire design. You can easily see the horizontal racroc lines, and note the honeycomb fillings.  No ombre shading.  Looks delicate enough that it might be French.

Comments: A semi-circular Chantilly hat veil.  Ribbon-like border with round dots used as esprits in the ground.  Interesting combination of honeycomb and six-pointed star ground used as filling – I wonder if the Fond Chant might be a repair? You can see a discontinuity in the fillings in the last two photos.  But the fond chant is also used elsewhere – puzzling. Use of this ground is often a sign of Spanish work, bu this doesn’t look like a Spanish piece.

Comments: A large bobbin-made tablecloth. I think it’s early 20th century, probably Belgian.  Figural work like this is more typically associated with Italy around the Cantú area, however the way the flowers are done, and the ‘islands’ in the brides are more Belgian. Also note the large areas of hexagonal and square plaited mesh, and also what looks like point ground in the center (not sure about the point ground, might be needle-made, not enough closeups to tell. That would put it more in the Point de Milan category; not necessarily an Italian lace).  I’m also thinking that the shine on the threads might indicate linen.  Which could put this piece somewhere else than Belgium, but I’m not sure where.
