http://tinyurl.com/pa67gz4 Antique Regency Brussels applique lace droschel veil – Pat Earnshaw collection
Size: 15″ x 31″
Starting Price: 25.00 GBP with reserve
Auction ends: March 15, 2015 12:09 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: An early 19th c hat veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on droschel ground. The ground is made in strips (seller cites 0.75″ wide), joined together to make large pieces. In my opinion the linen thread that was hand-spun for this type of lace is among the finest ever made, and I’ve made measurements under a microscope. It feels and drapes wonderfully. This piece has a typical wider lower border, narrow edge around three sides, and small esprits in the ground. The tape with holes at the top is meant to string a gathering thread through. This same pattern arrangement is seen in contemporary blonde-de-Caen shawls.
Provenance: ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Modifications: None.
Damage: The mesh is worn and frayed with pinholes. Some of the motifs are coming loose, a few ground sprigs are missing.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious folds or creases. I think this piece may have suffered from inappropriate washing sometime in the remote past.
Sold for 112.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Size: 3 discussed are ~30 cm x 70 cm
Starting Price: 42.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 15, 2015 12:30 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: Two veils are machine-made, but it’s the other three that I’m discussing here. I’m glad these three hat veils are together in the same collection and that the first one has the border scallops and crosses typical of Maltese lace. Without those characteristics (see the other two) it can be difficult to identify this kind of lace, which often has a fine, almost thready appearance. They often end up in my ‘undetermined guipure’ category. They all appear to have been made in horizontal strips joined together with a separated edge border, another typical Maltese technique.
Provenance: From a collection of family lace.
Modifications: None, although I can’t see the ends in the photos.
Damage: General wear with some frayed and broken threads.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: You can see in the photos that they have been folded, but I don’t see any creases in the heavy silk thread. Edges are often wrinkled.

Size: 44″ x 82″
Starting Price: 85.00 GBP with reserve
Auction ends: March 15, 2015 12:30 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A high-end market piece of bobbinlace applique on droschel ground, a length for a skirt is possible. Note the rather large area of woven fillings in the lower flowers, making me think this might be an English piece. But the overall feel of the design is more European. The design does have a symmetry around a lower central point, and the technique is excellent. Note the pomegranate motif used as esprits. Quite an impressive piece.
Provenance: ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Modifications: Cut along top edge on the right side. The sides appear to have been cut and bound with a tape, some of which is coming loose.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the mesh, some repairs.
Soilage: Looks clean, but this kind of lace often has light brown stains. There are some color variations in the larger photos that might indicate this, but nothing really obvious. Might just be a trick of the light.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Comments: A Carrickmacross guipure border. Typical chain foot edge, and note the looped picots along the lower border. Straight picots used on the brides. Interesting, fairly complex needle-made fillings in the flowers. Undulating floral design, well made.
Provenance: From a collection of family lace.
Modifications: There’s one photo of a portion of the ends, and they look like the original cutwork ended there, unfinished.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: A mid 18th c Louis XV design Flemish Mechlin lace with fond de glace or ijsgrond. Typical wave design with quatrefoil motifs. This type of pattern was sometimes doubled along the long edge to form wider piece, but here it is used as an edging.

Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: A few faint brown spots which the seller illustrates nicely on a light background.

Comments: A Honiton guipure handkerchief with 8-pointed star central cloth. Snails/slugs style with woven picoted roughly square mesh brides. Good technique with the English Flower Garden feel, although in the Devon area it’s sometimes called a ‘hedge row’ effect. Nice presence to the piece.

Comments: A square white silk Maltese cover or small shawl. Looks like about 8 layers – Maltese crosses around the outside, 3 rows of round mats of woven leaves, the an elaborate 8-pointed star in the center. There’s a little puzzling contouring around the star intruding into the nearest round mat layer.
Provenance: None cited.

Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. Although it looks a little shrunken, perhaps from a past wash?

Comments: A wide, long embroidered machine net with a romantic 2nd Empire design. Small sprigs and circles used as esprits in the upper ground. I think it’s tambour with two different weights of thread. Quite an impressive piece, probably Belgian. The wheat ear motif might indicate a wedding piece.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A Carrickmacross guipure border, a little long for a cuff, but possible. Religious iconography in a series of shields is very strong, and unusual. I’m thinking they might represent symbols of various saints. Typical looped picots on the lower border, double straight picots on the brides. Some needle-made fillings, but what I find really interesting is the decorative pulled thread embroidery in the cloth. I don’t recall seeing this in Carrickmacross before.
Provenance: Purchased years ago in Paris.
Modifications: None. Appears mounted onto a linen tape along the edge.
Damage: One broken bride.
Soilage: Seller cites white cream color. Some light brown spots.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: Two bonnets, the first from the western Slovakia village of Drahovce, the second from the village of Castkov in Northwestern Slovakia (Zahorie region). The lace is a point ground ‘lille-like’ pattern, probably stiffened. Drooping pear-shaped design on the first, florals on the second. 6 pointed star ‘fond chant’ fillings with some ‘mayflower’ like spots. Perhaps Tønder? Embroidery on the first is a cutwork with needle-made fillings. Embroidery on the second is cross stitch, with an embroidered machine net cap back.
Very interesting documented peices.
Provenance: first: Western Slovakia, village of Drahovce. second: Northwestern Zahorie region, village of Castkov, Slovakia.
Modifications: 1st one: cotton band between the embroideries is a replacement. Needs new tie string at back. 2nd one:
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Age darkening on the first. Second looks clean.

Offered by: Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments: It looks like a Point d’Angleterre fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. This type of lace is a fine pieced bobbinlace with Point de Gaze needle-made mesh, often with elaborate decorative ‘mode’ needlelace fillings. Quite a dense, romantic floral pattern. The bands of needlelace are a bit heavy in contrast with the finer bobbin motifs. This is one of the finest Belgian laces, 2nd half of the 19th century and early 20th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, although you can’t blow up the photos so a bit hard to tell.
Soilage: Age darkening along fan ribs. Lace has been glued to ribs in places.. Lace is a ‘rich cream color’.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles mantilla with a large Point de Gaze insert in the center, and smaller ones at the ends. Raised petal roses, good elaborate design in the needlelace. This is an elaborate design for an unusually shaped piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.

Comments: Looks like a Point d’Angleterre fan leaf – I think it’s a Point de Gaze ground, but can’t see the photos close enough to be sure. But it has that feel.
