Auction ends: April 12, 2015 8:20 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller jpmg91, West Bend, Wisconsin, United States
Comments: A large cloth with pulled thread embroidery on a delicate lawn. It is trimmed with a border of what could be a narrow Bucks edging. Large areas of honeycomb filling, we could probably identify the pattern with a little research.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Small holes and frays in the cloth. Part of the border near the join is damaged. Some fraying in the embroidery.
Soilage: Small localized brown spots.
Finish: Vertical and horizontal fold creases, general wrinkling.

121614931136   Sold for $20.00, 1 bidder.

Size: 14.5″ diameter.
Starting Price: $82.00
Auction ends: April 13, 2015 9:07 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Cantù round centerpiece, Typical hook and trefoil flowerheads. Note the bird figurals, with the front facing ring raised on the body.  Probably part of a larger original set.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Nothing obvious in the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Seller cites a soft patina, perhaps from past washes.

http://tinyurl.com/qbnofbw Brussels Bobbin Lace Aplique on Net Joined lappets mid 19th C BRIDE CW
Size: ~46″ x 4″
Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: April 13, 2015 9:33 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A lappet ‘set’ of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Some delicate needle-made filling stitches, mostly light open grids. This piece is unusual, it appears to simulate a 3rd quarter 18th century lappet set. The bobbin technique is quite delicate, and I find this a very interesting attempt.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None. Seller says the piece is joined in the center, but no photos to check this.
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle, and some loose threads on the outer border in a few places.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Slightly wrinkled.

http://tinyurl.com/p66dbop Handmade Belgian DUCHESSE bobbin lace Joined lappts mid 19th C BRIDE CW
Size: ~40″ x 5″ at center
Starting Price: $165.00
Auction ends: April 13, 2015 9:47 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A lappet scarf of Duchesse de Bruges. Unusual design with the small leaves radiating downward from the main central motifs.  Excellent work all over, I especially like all the leaves and the end roses.  Plaited picoted brides with a few ‘islands’ scattered at intersections.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None. Seller says the piece is joined in the center, but no photos to check this.
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle, and some loose threads on the outer border in a few places.
Soilage: Ecru color. Third photo looks like there might be a little browning in places, or maybe just a trick of the light.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

131479487339   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/qfwm6bu Antique Handmade Lace Butterfly Point De Gaz Brussels Needlelace Layered Wings 3
Size: 2.25″ x 1.75″, 1.5″ x 1-1/8″, 1-1/8″ x 1-1.4″
Starting Price: $30.00
Auction ends: April 13, 2015 11:43 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller shearnes, Wakefield, Rhode Island, United States
Comments: Haven’t seem many Point de Gaze butterflies lately on Ebay, but here are three. The designs are quite simple, no decorative jours. But the technique is crisp and sharp, and the small size is unusual.  In 1980 I met a woman in Zele who had made these for a living, so these were not confined to Brussels.  Primarily a tourist item.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None. Note the stickers on the backs which have some kind of inventory numbering.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Look clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

131479582471  Sold for $34.95, 2 bidders.

Size: 4″ x 26″
Starting Price: $34.99
Auction ends: April 13, 2015 4:05 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lady-linen, Seminole, Florida, United States
Comments: A short border of Point d’Angleterre. This is a later 19th c fine bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze ground and needle-made ‘mode’ fillings. The motifs in this piece are quite fine, with a particular emphasis on heavy needle-made borders and grids of padded rings in the fillings. Note also the extensive esprits in the ground.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Cut both ends. Engrelure added.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh, and a couple breaks in the fillings.
Soilage: Look clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 38″ x 8″ center
Starting Price: 4.99 GBP
Auction ends: April 14, 2015 11:02 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller rozshopping, Plymouth, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton guipure fallcap, and these don’t come up too often. Snails/slugs style with rather over-sized roses along the lappets. The design in the headpiece is a little scattered. Good woven leadwork fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Localized brown spotting throughout.
Finish: Wrinkled throughout.

http://tinyurl.com/mdqz7g8 Antique Honiton Guipure bobbin lace cap with lappets mid Victorian
Size: 38″ x 8″ center
Starting Price: $99.99 with reserve
Auction ends: April 14, 2015 11:08 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: An Argentan-style pair of lappets with connecting band, probably for a frill around a now missing cap back (seems a little short).  Brides bouclée – this type of ground is made in a three part process.  First a diamond shape grid is laid down, then the grid is sectioned off into hexagons. Finally the grid is all covered with either overcast or buttonhole stitches, or some combination of the two. There are MANY variations, used both in Alençon an Argentan (the much smaller industry). The thing that puts this more on the Argentan side is the lack of horsehair through the picots.  There are also some decorative ‘mode’ ring fillings, along with plain Réseau Fin; typical of the later 18th c.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None. The band looks to be one piece with the lappets.  Engrelure added around cap area.
Damage: A few frayed spots in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean, but might be a little beige – photos are not conclusive.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

141630375736   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/lpmtbw2 Duchesse bobbin lace and Point de Gaze needle lace Berthe and Cuff Set 19th C
Size: collar – 6.5″ deep, 1 yard neckline. cuffs – 3″ x 9″.
Starting Price: $145.00
Auction ends: April 14, 2015 12:05 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles bertha and matching cuffs. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts, although there are some decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Fairly typical Duchesse motifs, but the whole design is a bit unusual. No elaborate scrolls, more individual flowers.  Refreshing.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Occasional small hole in the PdG mesh.
Soilage: Light ecru/eggshell.
Finish: Slight wrinkling.

Starting Price: 100.00 GBP
Auction ends: April 14, 2015 12:30 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A Valenciennes border with cinq trou ground.  I’m thinking 2nd quarter 18th c where experimentation with this kind of ground was not unusual. Typical Louis XV design which works well when you double the length along the long edge to make a wider piece. Snowflake fillings, good line-drawing in the motifs.  Exceptional condition.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  One end cut, the other loose threads like a normal termination.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: A little age browning, some uneven, minor.
Finish: A little vertical creasing.

191553734364   Sold for 240.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

Size: 3″ x 1 yard 31″
Starting Price: $425.00
Auction ends: April 14, 2015 1:06 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: I think this is a mid 18th c Flemish Brabant border. The rather large motifs, the 6 pointed star ground, the brides used as fillings, other fillings of partridge eye are all typical of Brabant.  The thread in the piece is quite fine, especially in the ground. But the overall design is a little clumsy, also typical of some Brabant.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  One end cut, the other might be cut but secured. I count three joins, maybe more.Little hard to follow the design because of the joins. Engrelure added.
Damage: Some weaknesses in the engrelure. Mesh looks pretty good – a few broken brides.
Soilage: Some localized brown staining.
Finish: No obvious

Comments: A collar and long frontpieces of Duchesse de Bruges. Can”t quite tell if the collar is a separate piece, but it matches the rest nicely. Conventional motifs, no obvious raised work. A good middle-market piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Some broken brides and a few minor gaps in the edging.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 9″ x 46-47″
Starting Price: $232.00
Auction ends: April 15, 2015 7:47 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A rectangular scarf of 19th c Valenciennes, square mesh. Large pieces like this are unusual, and this might have been made in one piece. Typical mid to later 19th c design primarily of leaves with esprits in the ground.  I’m fairly certain this is some kind of shawl, although a little short for such a piece. Val was not a lace used much in the runner or doily form.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: Slight fraying along some of the edges. One horizontal line about halfway up the right side in the thumbnail might bear some investigation.
Soilage: Cream or light ecru.
Finish: I think I see some horizontal and vertical fold creases.

141631240533   Sold for $232.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/kdhwe86 Rare Early Cutwork Reticella & Bobbin Lace Border 17th Century
Size: 7″ x 72″
Starting Price: 125.00 GBP
Auction ends: April 16, 2015 2:11 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller ginqueen, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Reticella border with what looks like a Venetian bobbinlace lower edge.  Genoese bobbinlace would have a more complex design and usually some woven leaves. Typical tripartite design where the original base linen cloth has been separated into a wide middle and two narrow bands. Vertical elements were probably worked from the original cloth also.  ‘Reticella’ means ‘cut cloth’, and this is a typical example. Laces where the cloth was replaced with a parchment fall more into the ‘Punto in Aria’ category, although the Reticella name is sometimes retained.  As for date, it does have an early feel, however this is very difficult to ascertain. Such laces were made continually from their inception in the later 16th century are are even made today. But the careful treatment of the remaining cloth, the appearance of the patina, and the fortunate survival of the bobbinlace points argues for an early date.
Provenance:  Seller’s collection.
Modifications:  Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Cream with some faint marks.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller ginqueen, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A Point d’Angleterre border, later 19th c; good example of this very fine later Belgian lace.  Very fine bobbinmade motif, some with raised perls much like Rosaline. Decorative needle-made ‘modes’ serve as fillings. The ground is Point de Gaze, no esprits. Quite an elegant design. I’m guessing, but the inner petals in the roses along the bottom look like they might be layered.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  Cut both ends.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Cream with some marks.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A Point d’Angleterre lappet scarf, later 19th c.  Well done motifs, some with raised work, typical of this lace.  The Point de Gaze ground has a few esprits, and is carefully worked around all the motifs. The needlelace ‘mode’ decorative fillings are rather simple, but the design carries perfectly well with the bobbinlace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Cream with some faint marks.

Comments: These pieces have been on Ebay for a few weeks, but only now have fallen into my week-long window for the Ebay Alerts.  Note the piece shown below the four, this was sold on Ebay in August 2011 and is from the Jane Page collection http://tinyurl.com/a7usg2m. All of them have a very dark colored mesh, probably dyed  silk, with extensive colored silk embroidery. The net is the typical leno weave of buratto.  The Page piece is the most sophisticated embroidery, and the pieces listed are a bit sparse in their embroidery, with #2 being more ambitious.  I have a feeling that the Page piece and the first two pieces may have started out life more like the table covers of the 3rd and 4th pieces, but have been reworked.
The Page piece has been assigned a 16th c date. The seller says these are 19th c.  So things are all over the map on dates, although if you made a histogram of all the dates of similar pieces in various museums, they’d probably converge on the 17th c. I don’t know what special knowledge the seller has, but I’d put them earlier than 19th c.
There is a new paper out on the subject of these embroidered nets, presented at last year’s American Textile Society Symposium, Polychrome Nets: Italian laces from the Collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art by Chiara Romano  http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/tsaconf/896/.  Figure 11 in the paper shows a very similar piece to the 4th one below, and even the central cloth color is the same.
Because of this new work I think the name ‘polychrome buratto’ is appropriate for this type of embroidered net, and these particular pieces are probably Southern Italian.
Provenance:  None cited.
Modifications:  1st two probably reworked, 3rd & 4th more original. Cloth on the 3rd one might have been replaced.
Damage: #1 – 2 seam splits, some frayed mesh with a few holes.  #1 – looks cut on some edges.  #3 – A few separations. #4 – Some minor holes and a few tears along the edges.
Soilage: Some fading of the embroidery threads.
Finish: Fold creases evident in #3 and #4.
