http://tinyurl.com/ome54c5 52 inch (1.32 meter) Antique 1800s/1900s 13.38 inch Wide Black Chantilly Lace
Size: 13.38″ x 52″
Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 4:12 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller elora415, Novato, California, United States
Comments: Flounce of Chantilly, no ombre. Good Romantic floral design with extensive honeycomb fillings. No esprits in the upper ground.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: One end looks cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Some light vertical creasing.
http://tinyurl.com/nkpg2ze ANTIQUE LACE-EARLY BOBBIN LACE BORDER
Size: 2″ x 73″
Starting Price: $29.99
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 8:41 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A flat-grounded ~3rd quarter 18th c needlelace – looks like Burano from the general feel of the design, and the fillings are fairly simple. No overcast raised edges, typical of Burano, but the mesh is a little unusual. It runs parallel to the border, not horizontal as other contemporary pieces.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added.
Damage: Pinholes in the mesh, some early repairs to the ground.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases, maybe a little light wrinkling.
http://tinyurl.com/pe9rnos ANTIQUE LACE-FINE ALENCON LACE BORDER
Size: ~2-3/4″ x 70″
Starting Price: $75.00
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 9:39 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: An Alençon border, late 18th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Engrelure added. Alençon grounds can be complicated, sometimes the brides tortillée actually includes a buttonhole stitch or two, but not enough to qualify as brides bouclée. This might be the case in this piece where the upper mesh looks a little heavier than the usual brides tortillée. The rest of the design is quite simple, only some picoted rings, and the usual réseau fin along the foot edge – typical of Herren Alençon.
Damage: Seller cites some scattered minor repairs. Some fraying in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
http://tinyurl.com/p4uhrd2 ANTIQUE LACE-EARLY FINE BINCHE BOBBIN LACE
Size: ~2-3/4″ x 36″
Starting Price: $195.00
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 10:10 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: The lace industry in 18th c Binche was small compared to Valenciennes, and not well documented. This light feathery pattern has been ascribed to Binche, but you usually see it with a snowflake ground. This piece has the cinq trou, although ground experimentation went in many areas in the early 18th c. Until more definitive evidence can be found, it’s good enough to refer to this as a “Binche style”.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: Cut both ends. Unsure about the picot edge, there’s some hand-stitching that might indicate it’s a later addition, although parts look intact. The foot edge engrelure is an addition. Hard to tell if the entire width has survived intact.
Damage: Some minor pinholes.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Size: 15.7″ neckline. Depth 8.5″
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 10:10 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A deep Maltese collar or dress front. Four parts – Maltese crosses along a scalloped outer edge, an open star-like roundels in the center, then a line of guipure work, and a typical crossed woven leaf border at the neckline. Good technique
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None
Damage: ONe stray thread at upper left, but I don’t think it’s important.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases, some light wrinkles.
sold for 38.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Size: neckline 16″, back depth 3″
Starting Price: 15.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 11:15 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A small Duchesse de Bruxelles collar. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts, and no decorative needle-made fillings. Conventional Duchesse motifs. It all works well for a small collar.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes in the PtdG mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious cresases or wrinkles.
Sold for 23.70 GBP, 4 bidders.
http://tinyurl.com/p6cnbpg MAGNIFICENT EXTRA LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH CHANTILLY LACE SHAWL, SILK
Size: 250 cm x 127 cm
Starting Price: 35.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 11:32 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mystuff-fr, Mielan, France
Comments: Triangular Chantilly shawl with an elaborate floral design. Note the large sections of thin, drooping leaves, this is mirrored at the ends. Wide strapwork though out. Quite an unusual design, perhaps later 19th c since it is so different from the typical romantic 2nd Empire florals. The slightly grey appearance probably indicates the finer thread used in French manufacture.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: One end looks cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: Seller cites about 10 small breaks in the mesh, one large hole near one end. Borders frayed in places.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: Folds and crease throughout.
Sold for 56.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

Starting Price: 25.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 11:35 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Carrickmacross applique collar. A little cutwork along the outside edge, and note the looped picot on all outside edges. Good needlerun fillings, and a little buttonhole embroidery relief.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: A little fraying on some motifs, especially the outer edge – minor.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles (except maybe the right point).
Sold for 31.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Size: 2″ x 85″
Starting Price: 14.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 12:14 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A square-mesh Valenciennes narrow border, although sometimes you see this kind of pattern in a round hole mesh. Date uncertain, it has the light early 19th c look, but I suspect it was made though out the century. I’ve heard the name Valenciennes Anglaise associated with this kind of lace, but haven’t tracked it down in detail. Tends to be very finely done, and this is no exception.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: Cut one end, cut and I think secured on the other end.
Damage: Seller cites occasional small break to top edge.
Soilage: Area of slight age discoloration.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $869.99 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: March 29, 2015 11:01 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller antique-appraisal, San Diego, California, United States
Comments: A black triangular bobbin tape lace shawl. Could be Russian, but I think it has a more Eastern European flavor. The tapes are thin and meandering, looks like it would adapt well to figural work. Square mesh ground with a few woven leaves.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller says there is some repair.
Soilage: Looks clean but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
Unsold as of 4/6/2015 1:22 PM MST.

Size: 27″ long waistband.
Starting Price: 20.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 30, 2015 12:02 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton collar which could also be used as a dress front. Snails/slugs style with mirror symmetric design, although a bit crowded. There appears to be a rather coarse thread making the mesh with some thread would around intersections. Good woven tally leadwork fillings.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Pale ivory color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.
Sold for 34.00 GBP, 2 bidders.

Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: March 30, 2015 12:19 PM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kummitus13, Boynton Beach, Florida, United States
Comments: Looks like Point de Paris bobbinlace around the border of this table cover – the kind you sometimes see in pottenkant laces. The design fits around the corners, and you can see the join in the lower left. Good solid figural work with a bird, probably a peacock. Excellent embroidery and drawnwork in the linen.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: March 31, 2015 9:30 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller Imarzil1, New Gloucester, Maine, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts, and only simple needle-made knot grid fillings. The Duchesse motifs are small and well-worked with a few bride fillings. No raised work in the bobbinlace that I can see. Nicely sculpted inner border.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: None. I wonder if the center was replaced at some point since it is so white. But probably some time ago.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. PtdG mesh looks good.
Soilage: Lace and center are ‘subtle ecru color’.
Finish: Horizontal and vertical fold creases.

Starting Price: $25.00
Auction ends: March 31, 2015 9:38 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller Imarzil1, New Gloucester, Maine, United States
Comments: A Brussels Duchesse collar or dress front. Raised petals in the Point de Gaze roses. No needle-made decorative ‘mode’ fillings other than the standard rayed affair found in most PdG roses. A little raised work in the bobbinlace on halfstitch background. The shape of the piece is a bit unusual, rather small and I’m not entirely sure how it is used.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: None. Three small hooks attached.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. PtdG mesh looks good.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Light fold crease down the center.

Offered by: Ebay seller Imarzil1, New Gloucester, Maine, United States
Comments: Hmmm. I think the two pieces are intact and could be separated. This looks a little like Valenciennes de Gand, but with picoted brides instead of the square mesh. Innovative floral and leaf design, excellent technique.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: Two lengths sewn together lengthwise, then in a circle.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: I think I see some fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller petticoatlanesusa, Amherst, New Hampshire, United States
Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. The motifs are not typical Honiton, and the fillings appear to be needle-made which is a sign of a Belgian product. Good floral design, small well done motifs. No esprits in the main ground. Most of the design is massed at the ends.
Provenance: None.
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean – maybe a little beige in color.

Comments: This insertion looks like Cyprus work, without a cut/drawn cloth ground which puts it more in the Punto in Aria camp. I’ve never seen the figural work before. Interesting piece.
Provenance: Purchased in the early 1900’s, belonged to the Widener estate (rumored).
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut. Removed from a bedspread.
Damage: A little worn along top edge. Occasional loose thread.

Comments: A handkerchief of Point d’Angleterre – bobbin motifs with a Point de Gaze ground. There is a more conventional Point de Gaze insert in the centers and in each corner – no raised petals in the roses. Not much raised work in the bobbinlace either, motifs are small and delicately done. Typical of this lace. Beautiful attachment to the center cloth.
Provenance: Estate in Maine.
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh.

Comments: A dress front and choker collar of Rosaline Perlé – looks all one piece. The perls look needle-made. A few perls are used in the mesh and at the tips of some motifs. Some interesting fillings in the carefully done bobbin motifs. Interesting and elaborate piece of one of the best later 19th century Belgian laces.

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief, framed. Raised petal roses in the Pont de Gaze inserts. Raised work on halfstitch ground in the bobbinlace. Quite an elaborate design, well executed. A higher end market piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes in the cloth, some pinholes and small holes in the Point de Gaze mesh.

Comments: I have a handkerchief of this exact pattern in my collection, and I’ve seen others. It’s typical of late 19th early 20th C Armstrong work. Well done work with raised tallies in the leaves and roses. Good design, ideal for a Beds collection.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.

Comments: A Honiton collar with figural work of butterflies. Interesting raised work on some of the leaves and the larger butterflies. Involved design, well out of the snails/slugs mode. It uses the Honiton floral denseness to good effect. Note the alternating use of whole and half stitch in the insect wings and flower petals. Plaited, picoted brides, roughly square mesh.

Comments: A long collar of Beds, again resembling Thomas Lester work. All the woven tally work along with the little threads connecting the motifs gives this an interesting, light appearance. There appears to be a gold colored thread worked into some of the motifs, almost like a gimp or outer thread. Very unusual.

Starting Price: 450.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 22, 2015 11:45 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller linskapet, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway DG6 4UU, United Kingdom
Comments: A square shawl of Brussels bobbin and needlelace application on machine net. Some of the flowers are done in needlelace – no raised work. Some single ring and a few grid fillings. Romantic floral design around the edges with small sprigs used as esprits in the ground. Many photos, but still a bit hard to get an overall impression of the design – I understand the difficulties of photographing an entire piece this large, but even a poor impression of an entire piece laid out flat is better than the piecemeal approach. The design is appropriate to the piece, with fairly large motifs. Interesting comparison of this piece with the contemporary Honiton applique veil reviewed last week. The Brussels piece is more elaborate, but the overall feel is much the same.
Provenance: Country house estate in Yorkshire, details to be provided to buyer.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes in the ground, pinholes, inexpert repairs. Scattered holes in the Point de Gaze mesh in the needle-made flowers.
Soilage: Some localized brown staining, compromises the tulle in places.

Comments: An Italian mixed tape border – woven tape with needle-made fillings. I hesitate to attribute a date – but there is an early version of this called ‘mezzo punto’. The motifs in this piece do resemble the early Venetian and Genoese style (especially how the fillings are done). Brides look needle-made. It really doesn’t have a Victorian feel. I suspect it is linen, but can’t confirm from the photos. Interesting piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: Can’t see ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: A few broken brides. Overall wear.
Soilage: Resembles nr. 213 on Farrow & Ball colour chart (Savage Ground). (Kudos to the seller for that description. This is a shop that makes paint & wallpaper. Comments: An Irish Crochet shawl collar. I don’t think the last photo in the listing belongs to this piece. Large traditional motifs with raised work, heavy dense technique. don’t see the traditional three-part pinwheel design of the motif organization, but there is an interesting joined loop between adjacent motifs. Square brides – I think the picots are Clones knots.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with long front points. Small motifs mostly arranged in a 4-pointed cross (rather than the more common 3). Extensive raised work in the roses and note the raised dots in the thistle motifs. Rose, thistle, and trefoil are the three motifs used in this piece. Excellent technique, crocheted loops used as picots in the brides.

Comments: A deep collar of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. Needle-made knots usually in grids used as fillings. The design is a little sparse, symmetric, with a large wave pattern curling around the ends. Interesting piece, you don’t see that many deep collars in application.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pulls in the tulle. It has been worked on, there’s one area of repair to the mesh center right, and probably a few other areas.

Comments: A border of Lille lace, precisely made with straight header edge. It does look early 19th c. The mesh is slightly uneven, wonder if it might be linen thread? Good honeycomb fillings, along with a little variation. Note the woven tally in the honeycomb, a Lille characteristic.

Comments: A parasol cover of Brussels bobbin and needlelace applique on machine net. No raised work in the needlelace. Note the interesting needlelace center with ring and knot fillings. Usually these center parts are a little peaked to accommodate the tip of the parasol, but this one looks flat. Excellent design, romantic florals, a bit more naturalistic than usual. The roses look tossed n the air, quite effective. A high-end market piece, well executed.

Comments: A Chantilly fan leaf with a little bit of ombre shading. Noe areas of halfstitch without any gimp. A rather open design delineated by some cartouches ad leaf sprays along the border. Note also the fan guard extension on the right. Hard to tell the origin, but I’ll guess France from the delicacy of the design.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges shawl collar with an additional border attached along the neckline. A little on the bloemwerk side given all the gimp work, nothing raised that I can find. Irregular plaited brides. The design is quite dense, yes the technique more loosely woven giving this a light appearance.
Provenance: None cited.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges fan, much in the same style as the previous collar. Sticks could be bone, or celluloid. Conventional motifs, no raised work, note the ‘islands’ in the brides which might point to Bruges work. Left-right symmetry to the design, note the dips in the outer edge toward the ends, unusual.

Comments: Could be a Bucks lappet scarf. Or perhaps Lille. There’s a single thread gimp running around all motifs, along with a little woven tally work used as fillings. I have one like this in my own collection with the single row of dots running along the upper band. Not sure where that one is from either, but I’m leaning toward Bucks.

Comments: A lappet set with joining band. It has Brabant characteristics, the ‘fond chant’ ground or some variation of that, and the motifs are not quite as finely drawn as in the best Flemish work. There is quite a pleasing symmetry to the lappets (almost French candelabra), and the weaving is tightly done, which are characteristics not often seen in Brabant. Very simple picoted bride fillings, and a little bit of partridge eye. In some sense this is sophisticated, in another sense, not. Early Devon, maybe, but the atypical ground and the style of the motifs makes me think Brabant.
The joining band has a separate pattern, close to be not exactly matching the lappets. And there’s an interruption on the left join in the last photo which makes me think they aren’t strictly continuous.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Modifications: None.
Damage: A break in a filling in the left lappet. Seller cites a small repair to one end, but I’m having trouble finding it.
Soilage: Pale ivory color.

Comments: An early 19th c hat veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on droschel ground. The ground is made in strips (seller cites 0.75″ wide), joined together to make large pieces. In my opinion the linen thread that was hand-spun for this type of lace is among the finest ever made, and I’ve made measurements under a microscope. It feels and drapes wonderfully. This piece has a typical wider lower border, narrow edge around three sides, and small esprits in the ground. The tape with holes at the top is meant to string a gathering thread through. This same pattern arrangement is seen in contemporary blonde-de-Caen shawls.
Provenance: ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Modifications: None.
Damage: The mesh is worn and frayed with pinholes. Some of the motifs are coming loose, a few ground sprigs are missing.
Soilage: Looks clean.

Comments: Two veils are machine-made, but it’s the other three that I’m discussing here. I’m glad these three hat veils are together in the same collection and that the first one has the border scallops and crosses typical of Maltese lace. Without those characteristics (see the other two) it can be difficult to identify this kind of lace, which often has a fine, almost thready appearance. They often end up in my ‘undetermined guipure’ category. They all appear to have been made in horizontal strips joined together with a separated edge border, another typical Maltese technique.
Provenance: From a collection of family lace.
Modifications: None, although I can’t see the ends in the photos.
Damage: General wear with some frayed and broken threads.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: You can see in the photos that they have been folded, but I don’t see any creases in the heavy silk thread. Edges are often wrinkled.

Comments: A high-end market piece of bobbinlace applique on droschel ground, a length for a skirt is possible. Note the rather large area of woven fillings in the lower flowers, making me think this might be an English piece. But the overall feel of the design is more European. The design does have a symmetry around a lower central point, and the technique is excellent. Note the pomegranate motif used as esprits. Quite an impressive piece.
Provenance: ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Modifications: Cut along top edge on the right side. The sides appear to have been cut and bound with a tape, some of which is coming loose.
Damage: Occasional pinhole in the mesh, some repairs.
Soilage: Looks clean, but this kind of lace often has light brown stains. There are some color variations in the larger photos that might indicate this, but nothing really obvious. Might just be a trick of the light.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Comments: Two bonnets, the first from the western Slovakia village of Drahovce, the second from the village of Castkov in Northwestern Slovakia (Zahorie region). The lace is a point ground ‘lille-like’ pattern, probably stiffened. Drooping pear-shaped design on the first, florals on the second. 6 pointed star ‘fond chant’ fillings with some ‘mayflower’ like spots. Perhaps Tønder? Embroidery on the first is a cutwork with needle-made fillings. Embroidery on the second is cross stitch, with an embroidered machine net cap back.
Very interesting documented peices.
Provenance: first: Western Slovakia, village of Drahovce. second: Northwestern Zahorie region, village of Castkov, Slovakia.
Modifications: 1st one: cotton band between the embroideries is a replacement. Needs new tie string at back. 2nd one:
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Age darkening on the first. Second looks clean.
Finish: Seller says that on the first bonnet the lace was removed, hand-washed and re-stitched by a woman in the village. Second bonnet has some light creasing, minor.

Size: 10.75″ long, 20.25″ wide. Lace 5.5″ deep.
Starting Price: 180.00 GBP
Auction ends: March 20, 2015 8:52 AM PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller georginanntiques, London, United Kingdom
Comments: It looks like a Point d’Angleterre fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. This type of lace is a fine pieced bobbinlace with Point de Gaze needle-made mesh, often with elaborate decorative ‘mode’ needlelace fillings. Quite a dense, romantic floral pattern. The bands of needlelace are a bit heavy in contrast with the finer bobbin motifs. This is one of the finest Belgian laces, 2nd half of the 19th century and early 20th c.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos, although you can’t blow up the photos so a bit hard to tell.
Soilage: Age darkening along fan ribs. Lace has been glued to ribs in places.. Lace is a ‘rich cream color’.
Finish: Expected fan creases. Lace is a little wrinkled along the outer edge.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with inlaid Mother of Pearl sticks. Multiple layers of raised petals in the roses in the single Point de Gaze insert. A rather elaborate romantic design in the bobbinlace, a bit more elaborate motifs than usual in Duchesse.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. PtdG mesh looks good. Some repairs to the sticks. Rivet on the loop missing.
Soilage: Brown staining on the lace where glued to the left guard stick. Seller cites some faint marks on the lace.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Comments: A Duchesse de Bruxelles mantilla with a large Point de Gaze insert in the center, and smaller ones at the ends. Raised petal roses, good elaborate design in the needlelace. There are also some regions filled with needle-made decorative ‘mode’ stitches. Well done typical Duchesse motifs with some raised work against half-stitch ground. This is an elaborate design for an unusually shaped piece.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: Small holes and pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh. Some broken brides and a few repairs.
Soilage: A few small brown marks.
Finish: Several light fold creases.

Comments: Looks like a Point d’Angleterre fan leaf – I think it’s a Point de Gaze ground, but can’t see the photos close enough to be sure. But it has that feel. Probably an early 20th c piece due to the rather naturalistic design. Some good decorative needle-made ‘mode’ fillings in grid form, also some lnes of bobbin-made brides.
Provenance: None cited.
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few pinholes and small holes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light fold creases.
