http://tinyurl.com/o7apb94 Handmade Point De Gaze Needle lace LAPPETS COLLECTOR Mid 19th C. CW
Size: ~37-38″, 3.5″ wide at bottoms, 1.74″ mid width.
Starting Price: $175.00
Auction ends: Nov 16, 2014, 08:39 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: A lappet scarf of Point de Gaze, without raised work. An elegant slightly asymmetric floral design. Interesting treatment of the roses with outer petals outlined, and filled with esprits against the PtdG ground. Only a few simple decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Note the separated looped picots along the edges, sign of a specific manufacturer. This piece depends a lot on design. Note that a lot of the closeups are taken from the backside, making it hard to assess the technique.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few small holes in the mesh. A few loose threads along the border –  I wonder if this is wear from a past wash.
Soilage: Ecru color. Seller cites a few nearly imperceptible stains.
Finish: Horizontal fold creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller pretty-things1, Notting Hill, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A bonnet veil of embroidered net. I’m not sure, but it looks like the motifs are crocheted, so I’ll call this a type of tambour.  It’s a odd piece, nicely made, maybe a little heavy for a bonnet veil.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One repair near lower border.
Soilage: “Pale antique white”
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles. Beautiful drape to the tulle.

Comments: A lappet scarf of slightly heavy Chantilly, probably Belgian from the strong black color.  Fairly simple floral motifs along the edges and ends, with small dots in other cartouches along the length.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean, but hard to tell with black lace.
Finish: A little light creasing.

Size: 3″ x 92″
Starting Price: 18.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 16, 2014, 11:11 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of a kind of transition between tape and pieced lace, and very difficult to tell if it’s Italian or Flemish. Or something else. I think the thread is finer than it looks in the photos. The technique is fairly complex, and what is really throwing me are the picots along the edges of some (not all) of the motifs.  I find the design a little confused; sometimes the picots are there in a motif, sometimes not. And elements seem to run into each other. Given the rather stylized flowerheads, the fillings, and occasional hole in the clothwork, I’m thinking it’s a later Italian piece, maybe 19th c.  I do like the bold design without brides – very interesting piece.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Pale ivory color.  Some faint localized brown staining.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ll call this a Milanese piece, and the design is quite elegant. Almost Art Nouveau in feel. But it has a patina and a quality that I’d associate more with earlier lace. Note the scallops in the clothwork and the sharp pointed motifs is a bit unusual.  I’m particularly drawn to the edge treatment of the clothwork, very smooth, which is an Italian characteristic.  It’s a bit of a mystery, but I’ll call it late 17th early 18th C Italian.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: 4 joins (which I”m having trouble finding), 1 end cut, can’t see the other end.
Damage: Seller cites some areas of neat repair.
Soilage: Pale ivory color.
Finish: Nice smooth patina.

Comments: A long border of Bruges bloemwerk. Typical rose and leaf motifs with woven fillings, but quite different from Honiton technique. Irregular picoted brides.  A nice example of the type.

Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.

Offered by: Ebay seller hamstershoard, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of late 19th or early 20th c Point d’Angleterre – bobbinlace with Point de Gaze ground and needle-made decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  It has a kind of 3-part design; flowers on top, a ‘snowflake’ motif in the middle, leaves and bell flowers on the outer edge. The hanging bellflower is partially needle-made.  It’s a rather complex crowded design, but the technique is excellent.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One seam. One end cut and secured, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: Seller counts 7 small holes, some in the mesh is shown in closeup.
Soilage: Seller notes ‘not as white as seen in the photos’.  Small areas of red spotting.
Finish: In closeup it has that slightly shrunken washed look.

Comments: An Irish Crochet collar. The thread in the photos is so shiny that I’m thinking this is silk.  The motifs are quite varied and interesting, and note the needle-made fillings in some. A little raised work in a few flower centers. Approximately square meshed ground, and the picots look crocheted.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Some breaks along the outer looped edge.
Soilage: Ecru color, seller cites ‘couple of dirty marks on the edge’.
Finish: Wrinkled, doesn’t lay flat.

Comments: A Chantilly lappet scarf with a little ombre shading, probably a French piece. Good romantic floral design, nicely worked.   Both the design and technique are quite good.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few small holes and pinholes in the mesh. Loose threads in some localized spots along the edge.

Comments: A set of 12 round doilies with animal figures. At first I thought they were signs of the zodiac, but they seem to be more varied.  As for the lace, I’d call it ‘Flanders’, which is a variation on Point de Paris, but with different grounds.  Interesting designs, excellent technique.
Provenance:  None cited.

Damage: Frayed edge on one side for the ones with the cow and dolphin.

Offered by: Ebay seller diychick2003, Davis, California, United States
Comments: I’m speculating that this is a Swedish Vadstena lace collar. This is a rarely seen lace (you can find patterns at http://elsapetersonsspetsaffar.com/), and there isn’t much in the way of other guipure bobbinlaces that looks like it.  I find it quite a striking looking piece – too bad about the cut end.
Provenance:  Seller’s personal collection.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut.
Damage: The lace itself looks in good shape – occasional stray thread.
Soilage: Localized brown spots. Not sure of the overall color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A bonnet veil of Brussels needlelace applique on machine net.  The needlelace is quite delicately done, with simple knotted fillings.  Narrow lower border with feathery leaves, and a simple chain of flowers up the sides.  No esprits in the main ground. I think it’s quite a effective piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: One inch-long repair to the tulle.  One small hole in the tulle that I can see.
Soilage: No obvious staining, but hard to tell when photographed with this color background. There are some color variations that might be light stains.
Finish: Some horizontal and vertical fold creases.

Auction ends: Nov 17, 2014, 11:04 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A border of Alençon needlelace with a slightly scalloped edge. The general design and the rather open rempli stitch argues for an early 19th c date. It has the réseau fin, which is a twisted buttonhole stitch with overcast return – this often doesn’t survive well, and I’m glad to see it so nicely used in this piece. Horsehair left in the picots along the lower edge.  Fillings are mainly buttonhole variations, with a few rings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added.
Damage: Occasional small hole in the mesh.  One break in the lower edge, minor.
Soilage: A few localized brown stains..

Auction ends: Nov 17, 2014, 11:06 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: Given the general design of this piece I’m thinking it may have been a lappet. It’s a French needlelace with mailles (or brides) bouclée, the hexagonal 6-sided buttonholed mesh.  As I discussed with a similar piece last week offered by this seller, this mesh is made in three parts as described in the book by Delesque-Depalle.  This piece has quite an elegant design with fillings of both decorative ‘mode’ rings, and different patterns of twisted buttonhole stitches.
I’m not ready to give up on my opinion that it is very difficult to tell where such a piece was made, Alençon or Argentan. This mesh was used in both places.  But current convention among some collectors (and not all authors) would assign this piece to Argentan. The definitive work on the subject has yet to be written.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut both ends, engrelure added to both ends.
Damage: Occasional broken mesh and a little fraying. Minor. Looks like there might be some repair attempts especially toward the right end.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious wrinkles or creases.

Comments: Pieces like this come up once in a while, in both black and white Chantilly. Although they usually have some kind of ‘bride ground’, often made of an irregular very large mesh made of the same open stitch you find in the honeycomb filling. For lack of a better term, I call these ‘Chantilly guipure’. This one is yet another variation, most notable for the crosshatch grid running up the center of the scarf.  Wish we knew more about these. I can date one white piece in my collection to the late 19th c.

Comments: An exuberant lo0ped tape lace with some woven leaves and interesting picoted brides.  Given the design of the leaves (which look a little Genoese, but not very tightly done) and the lower edge treatment I’m guessing northern Italy. But an Eastern European origin isn’t out of the question.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks finished, the other cut. I wonder if the top edge was cut; some of the motifs look a little abruptly terminated. Engrelure attached.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A small Honiton collar. Snails/slugs style with a nicely put together design. The pattern is not symmetric, but I think it is quite effective as is.  Extensive leadwork tally fillings in the roses. Twisted pair brides, but I don’t think they are needle-made.
Provenance:  None cited.

Offered by: Ebay seller artdecorouen, Anceaumeville, France
Comments: A narrow, long border of Point d’Angleterre, which is primarily a delicate bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze ground. This one has some motifs in needlelace, along with interesting decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The lacemakers have packed a lot into a small space.  One of the better later 19th century Belgian laces.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end looks cut, can’t see the other end. Engrelure added.
Damage: A few pinholes in the mesh, and lower edge is a bit worn.
Soilage: A few red stains.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A flounce of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  Good romantic floral design, quite naturalistic.  Not many decorative fillings, but very good technique. Small dots used at esprits in the upper ground.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other.
Damage: Pinholes in the mesh, some repairs.  I think the mesh replacement might have been part of the original manufacture.  A little worn at the top engrelure, also along the lower edge.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Comments: This is quite an assembly of mid 19th century Brussels laces. As the seller points out, some of it looks like lappets.  I think the part around the neckline may have been cut out and appliqued on machine net, in other areas the droschel ground is intact.  A good study piece of some excellent lace – not that I would personally endorse such a reworking. You loose a lot of the original character of the lace.
Provenance:  None cited.

Modifications: Assembled from other pieces.
Damage: General wear throughout, fraying and repairs.
Soilage: Ecru or light beige.
Finish: A little wrinkled.

Comments: A Chantilly fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks. Fairly simple naturalistic design, quite effective with good technique. It has been backed with silk, which has helped it survive very well.

Modifications: None.
Damage: Guardstick repaired. A few pinholes and minor pulls in the mesh.

Schwarzes Gold, Black Gold, refers to the coal mining industry in the northern Ruhr region. This event occurs every two years in Bochum with a different theme each time.
Black and Gold lace will dominate the exhibitions this year. The conference project is to make gold stars of bobbinlace, and over 300 from approximately 130 lacemakers have been submitted.  These have also been shown at the 2014 IOLI convention in Sacremento.
There isn’t much information about this event on the web. Ulrike Voelcker is a prime organizer of this event; Bochum is her home town. She and Susie Johnson wrote a piece about it in the Fall 2014 IOLI Bulletin.

Entrance fee:  3.00 EUR

This exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of WWI.  The Kazematten is a series of underground halls built around 1685. They had many uses over the years, and served as bomb shelters in WWI.  One hall shows historical laces and other materials lent by the city of Ypres. Another hall shows contemporary lace on the theme of war – often incorporating the poppy motif.  Very much in keeping with this theme, the exhibition also includes the final showing of the International Poppy Project.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae, May 1915.

The poppy design interpreted in Point de Gaze by Catherine Barley.

You don’t have to be a big museum or an internationally known organization to mount a wonderful show. “California Poppies” is a traveling exhibition of the work of forty-five pieces by thirty of today’s finest lacemakers from 12 countries, each interpreting the same pattern. The idea began with a conversation between Ulrike Voelcker and Susie Johnson at the 2008 IOLI Convention in Rockford, Illinois.  A group of teachers at the convention further developed the concept, and decided to ask lacemakers to interpret the same design in different lace techniques.  Yvonne Scheele-Kerkhof suggested the Californian poppy since the IOLI convention the following year was to take place in Los Angeles, California. Ulrike Voelcker drew the Art Nouveau final design.

To facilitate comparison solely on lace technique, the participants were not allowed to change the design and all works are the same size (28 cm x 38 cm final frame size).  The artists were asked not to contact each other, and to also include a paragraph describing their creative processes.  A wide variety of techniques have been executed, 45 pieces as of the current edition of this post.  Click on Poppy_list for a searchable EXCEL file, or Poppy_list for a non-searchable PDF file.  A number of the pieces are to be seen at http://tinyurl.com/bwnjflm.

Catherine Barley and Susie Johnson have kindly provided LaceNews with scans of the poppies worked by the instructors for the 2011 UK classes.

Left: Withof poppy interpreted by Susie Johnson. Works are shown prior to framing.
Right: Valenciennes poppy interpreted by Ulrike Voelcker.

Chantilly poppy designed by Ulrike Voelcker and worked by Marion Rich.

Thanks to Catherine Barley, Pompi Parry, and Susie Johnson for the history and photos on this excellent effort. And to Jo Ann Eurell for valuable information in her IOLI review of the California exhibition.  This post will be updated as the exhibition moves to new venues.

A side note, “Californian Poppies” is the UK term for the flower, in the US we call them
“California Poppies”.

http://tinyurl.com/m9a64ep 19thC Handmade Italian Burano Needlelace Lg Berthe Lace Collar Nice Condition
Size: 40″ neckline, outside edge 96″, 7″ deep
Starting Price: $4.99 with reserve.
Auction ends: Nov 9, 2014, 07:15 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller mctiques, Winterport, Maine, United States
Comments: A bertha of Burano needlelace. Documented examples range from late 19th well into the first part of the 20th century, so it’s a little hard to date. The design is a meandering floral, with motifs a little smaller than usual, and there’s not much in the way of fillings or elaborate clothwork decoration. The typical couched outline thread is clearly visible – overall it’s a nice example. These don’t come up too often, maybe 3-4 per year on Ebay.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Not sure of the color, but I think it’s whiter than the photos indicate.  A few small stains on some of the clothwork.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Offered by: Ebay seller winterwonderlandfairy, london, United Kingdom
Comments: A bertha of Honiton applique on machine net; actually it’s more a large collar – bit small for a bertha. Snails/slugs style with an interesting chain of small flowers down the center, and used as esprits. This piece does a lot with just a few nicely made motifs.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: A few pinholes in the tulle.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A fan leaf of Point de Gaze needlelace. You can tell it’s a fan leaf from the double row at one end – this is where the guard stick goes. No raised work, typical romantic floral design, with a few nicely done decorative ‘mode’ fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Several small holes and pinholes in the mesh.  One small repair.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: $695.00 Buy-it-Now or Make Offer
Auction ends: Nov 9, 2014, 10:32 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller vintageblessings, Meridian, Idaho, United States
Comments: A complete set of a runner, 12 napkins, 12 placemats of Italian Cantú bobbinlace. Table linen collectors place a premium on the completeness of a set. This does not have the typical Cantú motifs, however the figural work and the general tape technique makes this a reasonable assumption.  My other option would be Belgian work. Interesting almost renaissance design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Small repairs on the corner of two napkins.  Other small repairs, broken brides, and loose threads.
Soilage: Runner and placemats light tan, napkins very light cream color.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: Honiton guipure cuffs, I’m not sure if these were made as cuffs or sewn from a longer length.  A more advanced work with interesting woven brides. Beautifully worked roses and leaves, note the 10-stick relief.  Some good grids of woven tally fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: May have been adapted from a longer length.
Damage: I see one small repair, and a few loose and frayed brides.
Soilage: Look clean.
Finish: Might be some fold creases, hard to tell.

Comments: This seems to be the week for Honiton. This is a shawl collar with long trailing ends. Snails/slugs style, and the design is a little chaotic, especially the center back. Makes me wonder if this  was pieced together. Lots of good woven tally fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None?
Damage: Some loose threads – looks a little worn.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A dress front of Brussels Duchesse.  No raised work in the Point de Gaze insert; instead it relies on decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Good raised work in the Duchesse motifs, especially against a halfstitch ground.  Irregular, picoted brides.  The technique is quite good, but the whole design is a little busy.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Upper right end torn away.  A few frayed threads.  Pt de G mesh looks good.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘Old white colour’.
Finish: No obvious wrinkles or creases.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: This Honiton guipure collar is bigger than it look.  Nice work, design of a central thistle surrounded by feathery leaves.  Simple flowers both inside and outside – the inner edge of the necklines is separated from the rest by an engrelure.  Still a little snails/slugs in design, but nice organization. The piece has a good presence.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites a couple of small repairs and broken brides.
Soilage: Seller cites ‘Old white colour’.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Comments: A fan of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net, with carved bone sticks and a J. Duvelleroy, 167 Regent Street London box.  Rather delicate design of an inner and outer edge and a small straight trail in the middle. Good simple design. The lace is mounted on a gauze backing.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: One repair to a guard stick. Lace looks in good shape, although there are few photos of the lace itself.
Soilage: I think there is some staining in the fan folds, and occasionally along the outer edge.
Finish: Expected fan creases.

Size:  9.5″ x 190″
Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 9, 2014, 11:25 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A tape lace flounce which has the typical later 17th c 6 pointed star mesh found in both Italian and Flemish work. The mesh is worked around the motifs, again an early characteristic. But I’m going to guess that it’s a 19th c Italian piece. The design elements are a bit lopsided in many places, and earlier pieces normally don’t overlap the tape in the trail. And I don’t see the careful top and bottom finish that one would expect in an early piece.  These laces are not well documented, and were made up into the 20th century.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see the other end.  Very plain engrelure added at top
Damage: I’m thinking there are some repairs to the ground, but not enough closeups to really tell. There are just some discontinuities in the mesh that don’t look original. There are small breaks in the mesh throughout.
Soilage: Seller cites “warm cream colour”.
Finish: No obvious creases or wrinkles.

Starting Price: 62.00 GBP
Auction ends: Nov 9, 2014, 12:18 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller pbur3053, Selkirk, United Kingdom
Comments: An Irish Crochet collar with a rather geometric ‘snowflake’ design. Note the needle-made fillings along with some twisted brides, probably also needlemade (could be a sign of an earlier piece). Seller says it is linen, although I can’t tell from the photos. Good tight work, note the masses of heavy rings. There are only about 3 motifs and a few variations on these, and I’m not sure this is all that well put together design-wise, and the edge treatment is not typical of IC. But I do think it’s an earlier, quite interesting piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: It looks very white, perhaps a previous wash/bleach?
Finish: No obvious crease or wrinkles.

Auction ends: Nov 9, 2014, 6:05 PM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller rbluechp10, Merrick, New York, United Kingdom
Comments: A needle-made collar or dress front.  Belgian or French, hard to tell. The design is more sophisticated than what one usually finds for Belgian work of this type, and note the small rings along the border. That leads me more to France. Ireland is also a possibility with the spiky picots you also see in Carrickmacross. Interesting chain pattern along the edges.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Might be a little cream color, hard to tell.

Comments: This was probably a Duchesse de Bruxelles triangular shawl at some point, but has been rather hacked up. Raised petal roses in the Pt de Gaze roses, and some raised work in the Duchesse.  Originally it was a large and impressive piece, now it’s basically yardage.
Provenance:  None cited.

Comments: A narrow border of Alençon, pretty much of the type called ‘Herren Alençon’, meant to edge men’s cuffs. The main ground looks like brides tortillée, although not enough closeups to tell for certain. Réseau fin along the border, with a few simple fillings.

Size:  3″ x 36.6″
Starting Price: 85.00 EUR
Auction ends: Nov 10, 2014, 10:16 AM, PST
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A narrow border of Alençon, with brides or ‘mailles’ bouclée (where the 6 sides of the hexagonal base are buttonholed over, as contrasted with brides or ‘mailles’ tortillée, where the thread is twisted around the 6 sides of the base mesh) in the main ground, réseau fin along the border. Brigitte Delesque-Depalle, who studied for a year in Alençon and wrote the definitive book on the subject, “La dentelle à l’aiguille”, describes the three-step process of making hexagonal ground in great detail.  I studied there for 3 weeks in 1980, at the same time Brigitte was there.
The fillings in this example are a little more elaborate than the previous piece; no esprits, and the motifs are heavier.  No obvious horsehair in the picots, which some consider a sign of Argentan lace, although it was not uncommon for the horsehair to be taken out.
Some, but not all authors consider the buttonholed mesh ‘in the style of Argentan’. However it is very difficult to tell actual Alençon and Argentan laces apart since they both used very similar patterns, and the twisted and buttonholed brides were used in both places.  Argentan was also a much smaller industry at the time this lace was made. When I was studying in Alençon I was able to examine early 19th c works in progress which were labeled by an Alençon manufacturer, and used the buttonholed brides, much as this piece does. Mick Fouriscot in her 2003 book ‘Le Secret des Dentelles vol III’, discusses all the French needlelaces, and gives the name ‘Argentan’ to a lace with a far more elaborate design.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut on one end, not sure about the other.
Damage: Noting obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: A little creasing and light wrinkling.

Comments: A small handkerchief of Rosaline Perlé. The perls appear to be buttonholed rings; sometimes these are bobbin-made. The edge is quite delicate and very appropriate for a piece of this size.  One of the better late 19th-early 20th century Belgian laces, and developed fairly late in the history of Belgian lace.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Seller says it has been washed but gives no detail on the process.  A few brown spots on the center cloth.
Finish: Center cloth a little puckered. A little bit of shrinkage in the lace, things aren’t quite as crisp as they could be.

Comments: A border of Brussels Duchesse, no raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. The Duchesse design is a little odd, I can’t tell if this is just general wear or a little deviation from the usual design.  It looks a little thin, but interesting.

Comments: Two sections of a border of Alençon.  Probably brides tortillée on top with réseau fin on the bottom.  A few rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings along the lower edge, filled in rights used as esprits in 9 rows above.  Given the rather open stitch used in the rempli (clothwork), and the naturalistic design of leaves, I think this is an early 19th c piece.  Technique is excellent.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: One end cut, can’t see other ends. Engrelure attached.  One join in one piece.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief and two matching borders of Honiton, I think. They look a little more like Bruges, but with extensive leadwork tallies, so probably Honiton also. The hanky is snails/slugs style with a deep border and circular center cloth, picoted irregular brides.

Comments: You do occasionally see single Honiton motifs, so I’ll put these two items togther. Comments: These two pieces are rather similar so I’ll review them both here. First is a shawl collar of Honiton, snails/slugs style with a scattered flower-garden pattern. Looped edge along the neckline and alternating roses and loops along the outer edge give a nice boundary to the inner motifs. Plaited, picoted brides.
Second is a lappet scarf, again Honiton snails/slugs style. Fairly simple pattern with looped edges. Looks like it might have a few pre-made tapes integrated into the design.
Provenance: Family collection.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: A few frayed threads, some general wear.
Soilage: Collar – Ivory color. Occasional localized brown spot.
Lappet scarf – Ecru color. One larger spot on the lappet scarf.

Comments: A large shawl collar of pieced lace, which has a bit of a Bruges look to it. But the ground is a roughly hexagonal grid of picoted buttonholed brides. Looks like some of the fillings might also be needle-made.  Quite a bold design, and I don’t really know where this was made.

Comments: A runner of Rosaline Perlé – a large piece for this kind of lace. I can’t tell if the perls are bobbin or needle-made. Well worked with an elaborate, dense design. There were probably matching pieces to a set although it is hard to think how the relief could have stood up well to tableware.

Comments: A rectangular veil of Lille. The straight lower border and rather thin lines of the motifs are early 19th century features. The lace is made in strips, and you can clearly see the racroc joining the lower edge, which seller says is ~8″ wide.  The rest is point ground net and a narrow border is sewn around the sides and top. I’m thinking the lower part is cut from a longer border; the design is interrupted on one end, probably on the other, but closeup photos are lacking. This is not uncommon in pieces like this, and sometimes the large areas of net are actually machine tulle. I wouldn’t be surprised if the thread is linen.
Provenance: Ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw, auctioned in London in 2014.

Modifications: None
Damage: Some loose threads and some pinholes in the mesh.
Soilage: Looks clean.
Finish: Some light creasing.
