This is the 44th annual Lace Week in Rauma, Finland. Most of the events will be held in Finnish, although some are in English and French. There will be extensive events many unrelated to lace. There is a lace workshop for young children, and an international crafts market. There will be an exhibition of modern Czech lace at the Rauma museum, along with a fashion show.
As in the past, there will be a number of performances by various bands, especially on Friday, the traditional “Night of Black Lace”.
This year’s poster includes a copper wire bobbinlace piece by artist Hellevi Wikgren.

In the early modern period the trade of textiles, dress and other fashionable materials reached a global scale. Cotton textiles were the backbone of the trade of the European East India Companies in Asia, but also between Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. They followed the global success of the silk trade and the several attempts to transplant silk’s cultivation from China to southern Europe and then to Northern Europe and the Americas. Woollens became key to the Atlantic trade and linens structured long-distance trade within Europe, China and India. One should not forget the trade in mix fabrics, in beaver hats, lace, feathers and other decorative items as well as the exchange of ready-made garments, of types of fashionable garments, of designs, of raw materials such as dyes and fibres, and of technologies.
This workshop brings together PhD and Postdoctoral students to reflect on transnational, comparative and connective histories of the early modern exchange of textiles, dress and clothing. We encourage in particular the submission of papers exploring new topics and methodologies, ranging from the quantification of trade, to technological transfer, to the use of material culture methodologies in research.
To submit a proposal, please send a 200-word abstract and title of the proposed paper, together with a one page CV, to: k.hutkova@warwick.ac.uk.The closing date for proposals is 15 July 2014. Successful candidates will be notified by the 10 August 2014.

I especially like the cuff with a rather art nouveau design. The insertion fragment is an unusual form, wish there were more.

Comments: A long, narrow Mechlin border with relatively straight edge. I’s an early 19th c style, although could have been made anytime in the 19th c. Determining the fiber type would help with date. The design itself recalls the ‘Herren Alençon’ with a narrow border and small sprigs in the upper ground. Note the slightly streaky mesh, characteristic of this lace.

Comments: A fairly wide border of Milanese tape lace with a strange ground, seller calls it ‘torchon’, and that’s not a bad description. It does deviate from the usual plaited grounds of early Milanese. Good tight tape work with only occasional decoration, and the flowerheads are excellent. The design is also very symmetric, more recalling Abruzzi work. I think it’s a later piece, maybe late 18th or 19th c.

Comments: A collar of Valenciennes with square mesh. I’ve seen this design before, but never in this good a shape. Shaped pieces of Valenciennes are fairly unusual; normally they are confined to very small collars and cuffs. Somehow I get the impression from the photos that the piece is a bit dense, as if a slightly thicker thread was used than normal. But it is difficult to tell from the photos.

Comments: Hmmm. In the #1 2013 issues of the OIDFA bulletin, there is an article about the Bayeux Tapestry needlelace copy at the Smithsonian collection in Washington DC, which was subsequently and very credibly identified as a product of the Lefèbure manufactory. I think that the similarities of this piece with the other one are so strong that I’m going to call this French, probably also from Lefèbure. Beautiful technique. It doesn’t look Italian to me at all, either in style or technique.
