Place: el Pabellón Multiusos de Vall d’Alba

This event was quite difficult to find anything about, but I finally found a short sentence in the above website that it was to be held on the last day XVII Fira de Vall d’Alba. As in past events, about 500 lacemakers were expected. I haven’t found any information on how the event went, yet.

Ebay Alerts! Twenty-three items – April 13, 2014

http://tinyurl.com/p2f7wjo Fine Antique Victorian Chantilly Lace Capelet
Size:  14″ x 32″
Starting Price: 29.99 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 10:15:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller honeychild0_2, dorset, United Kingdom
Comments: An interesting bonnet veil of Chantilly. I especially like the upper edge treatment, small holes for the drawstring alternating with single flowers, and a string of leaves below.  Small, extensive esprits in the ground. The lower border is narrow, relying a lot on large areas of half stitch with few fillings. Nicely worked small flower sprays.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional minor loose thread.
Soilage: Looks OK, but hard to tell with black lace.  Almost looks unused.

221411124248   Sold for 58.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/pz3lbjr Antique long Duchesse de Bruges hand made collar with lapels Late Victorian
Size:  4.5″ x 50″
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 11:16:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments: A collar or lappet scarf of Duchesse de Bruges. Note the occasional heavy needlemade ring in flower centers, much like that used in Rosaline. But for the most part this is conventional Duchesse, with some raised work against half-stitch background, rolled ribs, typical flower and leaf design. Plaited unpicoted brides.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Occasional minor loose thread.
Soilage: Some discoloration along edge.  Not really crisp.

390812825922   Sold for 13.60 GBP, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/o6fw98u ANTIQUE 19THC HM UNUSED FINE VALENCIENNES LACE FLOUNCE/ LOVELY DESIGN
Size:  2.5″ x 111″
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 14:28:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments: A narrow Valenciennes square mesh border. The motifs are tightly woven, recalling earlier ‘line drawing’ techniques. The design is fairly standard for this lace, but technically I find it impressive.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: At least one end cut, not sure about the other end.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks slightly beige in color, but difficult to tell exactly.

181374866232   No bids.

http://tinyurl.com/pww6p9r ANTIQUE BRUSSELS LACE COLLAR
Size:  20″ wide by 20″ high
Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 14:28:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sewpatches0, Watsonville, California, United States
Comments: An unusually shaped dress front of Duchesse de Bruges. Design is left/right symmetric, and appears a bit crowded. If you look closely you can almost see different hands making the motifs. Some raised work, no needlelace accents that I can find.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks clean in the photos.

331174682452   Sold for $65.00, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/qdgbpkd ANTIQUE VTG VICTORIAN BLACK BOBBIN CLUNY LACE JABOT COLLAR 11×50
Size:  11″ x 50″
Starting Price: $16.99
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 18:47:38 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York, United States
Comments: There’s a fairly new book out, “Spitzenschmuck Für den Kopf, Barben aus Hermannsburg, 2012, an OIDFA publication with several authors.  This piece looks suspiciously like some fallcap examples in that publication, although there’s no provenance to tell for certain.  It does have a picoted bride ground, a plaited border, and some raised tallies on half-stitch ground.  It’s possible, and quite interesting.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: Seller cites some minor edge fraying.
Soilage: Look clean, but hard to tell with black lace.

360901300633   Sold for $27.96, 2 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/obzus3a ANTIQUE 19th C HANDMADE FLEMISH LACE BOBBIN LACE COLLAR 5″ X 54″

Starting Price: $39.99
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 18:54:41 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller kuchcollectiblesandvintagelinens, Ronkonkoma, New York, United States
Comments: A long collar of ‘Old Flanders’, the very fine type. There’s also a larger motif type.  Not quite a Rosaline, but close. This is a fairly complex type of lace, but not well documented. Good dense design, small, well-worked motifs.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: A few frayed and loose threads, nothing major.
Soilage: Look clean from the photos.

360901303668   Sold for $39.99, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/q38prob Antique Chantilly Lace Folding Fan Mother of Pearl Sticks Guards Victorian Great

Starting Price: $149.99
Auction ends: Apr 13, 2014 20:30:15 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller valeries_trunk, Boyertown, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A Chantilly fan with Mother of Pearl (Abalone) sticks. The lace is backed with white silk gauze which doesn’t extend all the way to the outer edge, so there’s a nice row of free flowers along the top.  Good fine floral work, a nice example.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Can’t see anything obvious, but again, hard to tell with black lace.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Apr 14, 2014 06:48:55 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A narrow scarf of Brussels Duchesse.  Single large raised petal roses at the ends, no needle-made ground. Not enough photos to tell if there is more needlelace further up. Both bobbin- and needle-made motifs are finely done.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: none
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Looks unused.
Soilage: Looks clean.

http://tinyurl.com/nankm4m ANTIQUE LACE-CIRCA 19THC. FINE VALENCIENNE LACE
Size:  4″ x 54″
Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Apr 14, 2014 07:16:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of what looks like Valenciennes de Gand. Actually the closeups of the mesh aren’t fine enough to tell if it is bobbin or needle, and if it is needle, I’ll gladly go over to Point d’Angleterre. However the motifs are very finely made, consistent with high quality Valenciennes de Gand.  Note also the varied bobbin-made fillings; not typical of a mixed lace.  Excellent design and work.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  Engrelure added at top.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Looks unused.
Soilage: Looks clean.

390816716341   $254.00, 5 bidders, reserve not met.

Starting Price: $45.00 with reserve
Auction ends: Apr 14, 2014 07:16:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller mithya, Irvington, New York, United States
Comments: A border of complex Valenciennes.  Very finely worked, note the fairly narrow width. As the seller notes, this is a top quality ‘summer lace’, and was also often used for bed linens.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos. Looks unused.
Soilage: Looks clean, a few fold lines.

Starting Price: 75.00 EUR, 120.00 EUR Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Apr 14, 2014 11:03:48 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller Sirjle, Paris, France
Comments: A border of cream silk Blonde de Caen bobbinlace, very typical large swirling design. This is a very delicate lace and often does not survive well. Excellent contrast between the heavy cloth and lighter half stitches, and note the openwork in the leaf border.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Can’t see the ends to tell if they are cut.  This does appear to have been cut from a larger piece, the top edge is raw.
Damage: Small holes throughout the mesh.
Soilage: Cream color, no obvious stains.

Auction ends: Apr 15, 2014 13:27:05PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller snakey03rr, Bourbon, Missouri, United States
Comments: An unusual form for a Chantilly shawl, a wide rectangle with thin borders all around, and an inside border on two sides. Looks like it was designed to be folded lengthwise for wearing.  Esprits all throughout the ground.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.
Soilage: Looks OK, although black color makes it difficult to tell.

Comments: I’ll agree with the seller, this does look Swedish, and there are a number of books out today on the technique. Something you don’t see very often.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller twist-in-time, Keller, Texas, United States
Comments: A needlerun net rectangular shawl – hard to tell the origin. It has the Blonde de Caen design look, with large flower sprays massed at the ends. The embroidery is quite solid, done with a heavier thread, as are the filling stitches.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites some tiny repairs. A few pinholes.

Size:  79″ x 115″
Starting Price: $136.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Apr 15, 2014 14:32:22 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacechest, Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States
Comments: A veil of Brussels Bobbin and Needlelace application on machine net. I can’t tell what form this is, either the oval more associated with wedding veils, or a rectangle. The needlelace consists of carefully done roses, no raised work, all a little heavy.  Decorative ‘mode’ fillings are mainly of grids of rings. Some nice bobbin work on flowers and leaves. The large flower/leaf sprays used throughout the main ground are a bit unusual, and these share the space with an extensive ground of ring esprits. Looks like a later 19th c piece.
Provenance:  Ex. coll. Nancy Miller Arnn who was the niece of Thomas Edison’s wife, and also a descendant of many other famous people. Unclear exactly what family this lace belonged to.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites 3 professional repairs.
Soilage: Seller cites yellowish discoloration along some edges.

Comments: A Honiton handkerchief; typical floral and leaf English flower garden design. Snails/slugs style, and I especially like the focal point of the roses in each corner next to the center cloth. Picoted brides, and a nicely made piece.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Seller cites a few minor repairs.

Comments: An embroidered net triangular shawl, needlerun stitching. The net is unusual, 6-pointed star mesh, not the regular tulle. No obvious symbolism to tell origin for certain.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None
Damage: Nothing obvious from the photos.

Starting Price: $65.00
Auction ends: Apr 17, 2014 10:26:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments: This is a delicate piece with a straight lower edge, often taken to mean an early 19th c date. It can be incredibly delicate, with a pattern that appears to be made up of small almost circular elements assembled into motifs. The mesh of ’round hole’ Valenciennes is easily distinguished from the square mesh variety. Lace of this type was made in various places, and is a collecting area all in itself, and you do see similar patterns in square mesh. I’ve seen pieces from extraordinarily fine to fairly coarse labeled ‘Valenciennes Anglaise’, or ‘Fausse Valenciennes’. It is unfortunately, very little researched.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Cut one end, can’t see the other. Two seams.
Damage: A few pinholes, nothing serious.
Soilage: Some fold lines. Looks clean.

Comments: A short scarf of Honiton with scalloped edge, snails/slugs style. Some of the flower motifs are quite interesting.  Ground is needle-made.  Extensive leadwork fillings.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:

Comments: A handkerchief of Point de Gaze. A nice example showing just how well the lacemaker can do without raised work or decorative ‘mode’ fillings.  Well organized design filling almost the entire space.
Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: None.
Damage: Seller cites 5 small pinholes in the mesh. Looking carefully, some are a little larger than pinholes, but quite minor.
Soilage: Looks white. Funny, the fold lines in the center cloth don’t seem to correspond to fold lines in the lace, wonder if it is a replacement.  But then it might be my imagination.

Comments: A heraldic border of Italian lace – it has that narrow tape look of l’Aquila There’s also no ground or elaborate head or foot edge as found in Milanese. I’ll go with a the more central Abruzzi region for this piece.  The design is exciting, the technique excellent, probably made for a specific family.

Provenance:  None cited.
Condition:
Modifications: Some reinforcing done along the neckline.
Damage: Quite a few small holes in the tulle. A little fraying in cloth edges and along picot edge.
