This event came out of a meeting of the four English lace groups, The Lace Guild, The Guild of Needlelaces, The Lacemakers Circle, and The Ring of Tatters. They first met in Cirencester on June 27, 2010 to discuss the possibility of a joint exhibition. Tentatively titled “Lace 21” (Lace in the 21st Century), the joint group made several proposals for an exhibition, which was eventually accepted by Waddesdon Manor. The Guild of Needlelaces and The Lacemakers Circle have withdrawn from the effort, and The Lace Society has joined. The exhibition showcases the work of members of these organizations along a theme organized around a weekend house party, for which the manor was famous. The works are inspired by artifacts within the house or the building itself. Antique laces from the Rothschild collection will also be displayed.
The exhibition will last all season long (27th March – October 2014, tbc) and it is hoped to attract lacemakers from both within the UK and from overseas, to see what can be done to blend old and new lace styles, and complement / contrast traditional along with contemporary designs. It also has a secondary aim, which is to promote lace as a modern textile and lacemaking as a craft to many thousands of non-lacemakers who will be passing through a premier National Trust stately home in England and for the three groups who make up Lace 21 to offer demonstrations and taster sessions to the public to promote our heritage on several days through the season.
