Online Catalog: http://tinyurl.com/m3sjsck  laces are lots 1 to 100

Auction by: Thierry De Maigret

phone: 01 44 83 95 20
expert: Séverine Experton-Dard, 06 80 65 12 18,  sevdex@yahoo.fr

Notes: This auction is a pleasant surprise, coming so close to the October 10th Drouot auction. There are 100 lace-related lots, and the photos are much better, although I wish there were more closeups.  Altogether this is a very good set of laces spanning the 17th to 20th centuries. Take a close look at the following:
Lots 11, 14, 17, 23, 26 – Chantilly, not marked machine-made, but photos aren’t close enough to really tell.
Lot 90 – A very important Point de France wide flounce, est 2,500 to 4,000 EUR (it sold for 6,000 EUR)
Lot 93 – An amazing Alençon flounce, est 1,500 to 2,000 EUR (it sold for 10,000 EUR)
Lots 25, 29, 82, 84, 91, a variety of lappets, mostly from the 18th c.

The next important Drouot lace sale will likely be May 23, 2014.

Drouot is an organization of auction houses throughout France, including their main facility, the Hôtel Drouot in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. Ebay Alerts! Fourteen items – October 17, 2013

http://tinyurl.com/p22v72v 432* SPLENDIDE GRANDE COIFFE ANCIENNE ORIGINE ALENÇON TULLE BRODÉ ÉPOQUE 19ème
Size:  60 cm circumference – measurements given are confusing.
Starting Price: 8.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 18, 2013 11:40:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller claude580_0, Pazy, France
Comments: Nice to see this seller back after summer vacation. A traditional bonnet from Alençon. The embroidered net used at the back of the cap is normally a local product meant to imitate Alençon lace. The pleating and shaping of the linen in this piece is remarkable – some of the stiffening has been done with a paper insert.
Condition:
Modifications:  Drawstring at the bottom of the lace missing.
Damage:  Quite a few holes in the lace capback.
Soilage:  Looks good from the photos.

300987737971   Sold for 12.61 EUR, 3 bidders.

Starting Price: 3.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 20, 2013 01:29:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller pinna102, Cantoniera Campu Omu, Italy
Comments: I thought these tape lace doilies were interesting with the fairly complex guipure flowers.  They resemble Idrija, but I’m guessing they are an Italian product.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  None that I can see
Soilage:  Looks very clean.

390681133109   Sold for 19.50 EUR, 4 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/kguy66l beautiful and scarce handmade Youghal lace handkerchief very good work 15in sq.
Size:  ~15″ x ~15″
Starting Price: 30.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 20, 2013 06:16:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments: A Youghal handkerchief with rounded corners. There is one main scrolling leaf repeated around the edge, between these are some vertical motifs that vary a little in design. There are a few variations in the clothwork, and some simple decorative fillings. The lacework is nicely done, the design isn’t Youghal at its best.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Center cloth quite worn and rather shredded. Occasional small hole in the lace, minor, and a few roken brides.
Soilage:  Looks clean – can’t spot discoloration from the given photos.

350900422777   Sold for 75.00 EUR, 4 bidders.

Starting Price: 18.00 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 20, 2013 11:38:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller frangipani20_2, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom
Comments: A border of Maltese, medium width and a good collectible length. Alternating roundels of Maltese crosses and the sun motif. There is a mat of woven leaves and an elaborately plaited border at the top. All quite nicely worked, and I like the contrast between the smaller sun and larger crosses.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut at both ends.
Damage:  Looks intact from the photos.
Soilage:  Dark cream color.

141086784884   Sold for 18.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

Starting Price: $0.99
Auction ends: Oct 20, 2013 18:59:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller rosietoesmac, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
Comments: A narrow Belgian Rosaline Perlé collar. The perls appear to be needle-made. Picoted plaited brides. The work looks nicely done, but it’s a little hard to see the overall pattern from the photos.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Nothing obvious
Soilage:  Maybe a little dark from age, and slightly wrinkled.

181239637900   Sold for $24.39, 10 bidders.

Starting Price: 55.00 EUR
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 05:49:24 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller florencel4670, Palaiseau, France
Comments: Two pieces of the same Point de Gaze border. The raised petal roses are rather narrowly shaped, a bit beyond the conventional more rounded petal. Interesting raised ring fillings in the roses, and I like how the flowers hang down from the top of the border.  Very dense patterning along the lower edge, and note the esprits in the ground. This is a fairly complex design, nicely done.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut in
Damage:  Seller says the
Soilage:  It’s not perfectly crisp, maybe a sign of a past washing? Hard to tell.

390677265379   Sold for 250.00 EUR, 8 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/lnatqg7 Antique Bedfordshire handmade bobbin lace handkerchief border.
Size:  13.5″ square
Starting Price: 14.95 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 06:47:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: I’ve seen this particular pattern for a handkerchief in floral Beds several times.  This one has a modification in that the two leaves on each side are pointing in the same directions, not mirror images of each other. You also occasionally see this pattern with only one leaf on each side.  Well worked, nice raised tallies.
Condition:
Modifications:  No center cloth, serious cut through one side.  People do this sometimes to try and convert a handkerchief edge into a collar.
Damage:  Seller cites a few minor pulls.
Soilage:  Looks clean from photos.

Size:  ~10″ x 30″
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 07:21:42 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Honiton fallcap. Rather chaotic design. Sometimes I wonder in seeing a piece like this – we do know Honiton was made in Ireland but we don’t really know what it looked like. Some descriptions remind me of what we are seeing here, but there’s no really good way to tell.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  A number of breaks in the brides.
Soilage:  Seller says it needs a launder.

Starting Price: 39.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 07:53:25 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A black embroidered net triangular shawl.  Good needlerun embroidery which could indicate Limerick. It has quite a delicate, pleasing appearance – emphasized I thnk by the lack of esprits in most of the open areas of tulle.
Condition:
Modifications:  None.
Damage:  Some pinholes, a few loose threads along the border.
Soilage:  Seller indicates that it needs a launder, I don’t see any obvious soilage.

Starting Price: 24.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 08:09:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A small Duchesse de Bruges handkerchief. Conventional Duchesse motifs, nicely arranged. I wonder if the center cloth is a replacement, the grain doesn’t seem  aligned with the lace.
Condition:
Modifications:  Center replaced?
Damage:  A few broken threads. and loose brides.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean from the photos, no obvious stains.

290996276386   Sold for 41.00 GBP, 3 bidders.

Starting Price: 39.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 08:09:16 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: This is quite an interesting piece. It is a very flat Belgian Point de Gaze type needlelace, minimal decorative ‘mode’ fillings. In the upper part it looks appliqued on a machine net.  Along the lower border it looks like the regular Point de Gaze mesh. Almost like it is trying to copy the ‘Herren Alençon’ style.  The design is rather architecturally vertical, and note the downward facing flowers used in the upper ground.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut on both ends.
Damage:  Small holes and pinholes in over the grounds.
Soilage:  Looks clean in the photos.

Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 08:31:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A hat veil of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  A good middle-market product with a rather sparse design and minimal needlelace fillings. The motifs are a little large and slightly loosely worked. It does have a nice, light appearance.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Occasional pinhole in the machine tulle and some tiny pulls.
Soilage:  Looks clean in the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A Duchesse de Bruges border, fairly wide.  Good raised work against halfstitch clothwork, and the motifs are well drawn and tightly worked.  Good sweeping romantic design of a large swag cradling lots of scattered flowers. Well done flowers in between the repeats.  Simple unpicoted plaited brides. Altogether quite a pleasing design.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites some minor pulls.
Soilage:  Looks quite clean from the photos.

290996296867   Sold for 195.00 GBP, 4 bidders.

Size:  28.5″ wide, lace 8″ deep?
Starting Price: 49.99 GBP
Auction ends: Oct 21, 2013 09:33:09 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments: A fan leaf of, well, I’ll call it Duchesse, but it almost me of Rosaline techniques. Maybe a Ghent product? Just goes to show how interestingly varied the Belgian bobbinlaces can be.  The 5 petaled buds around the edges are nicely done, note the window in each petal. I like the unusual grid-like fillings in many motifs. The design is pretty scattered, and I’m not sure I like all the very small motifs combined with the larger ones.  Quite an intriguing piece.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  Seller cites some minor pulls. Loose spots in some of the fillings.
Soilage:  A few stains center top.

290996318211   Sold for 63.75 GBP, 2 bidders.

Comments: I think this is a Flemish 19th c product. It has a simple edge border, and the motifs are a bit lightly worked and rather standard in design.  6-pointed star ground, and there are no photos of the backside so you can’t tell if threads are carried over from the ground. It almost looks like the design is split lengthwise down the middle, but I think th’s just an illusion.

Modifications:  Cut on the one end I can see. Engrelure attached.

Comments: A border of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net.  No needlelace that I can see.    Motifs are a bit large, note also the rings used as esprits in the round.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut on one end at least.  Looks like it was removed from something, stray threads at the top.

Comments: A border of Irish Crochet in a kind of Rose of Sharon pattern, but each element is enclosed in a horseshoe.  9 layers of this pattern, rather unusual. I always like to see Irish Crochet used as a textile.
Condition:
Modifications:  Cut on both ends.
Damage:  Nothing obvious from the photos.

Comments: A small fan of Point de Gaze with raised petal roses. A lot packed into a relatiely small space.  Some nice large areas of decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Mother of pearl sticks embossed with silver and gold.  It all goes together quite nicely.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  A number of pinholes, and several well done repairs with Point de Gaze mesh stitch. There’s one closeup of a repair, but you can see other patches that look similar in the larger photos (the repair thread is very fine, but whiter than the original).  Stick looks in good shape.

Comments: A Maltese collar, 3 layers, with deep points.  Alternating sun and cross motifs on the outside.  Rather thin, oval woven leaves and guipure crosses in the middle.  Vertical ‘wheat ear’ leaves along the neckline. The work looks a little more open than other Maltese pieces of this construction I’ve seen.
Condition:
Modifications:  None

Comments: A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief.  The ovals in the corners contain a flat Point de Gaze, rather unusual design. Just a simple flower surrounded by some thin looking almost like a laurel wreath, and a few lines of decorative rings serving as leaves.  The bobbinlace has conventional Duchesse motifs, note the deep points going into the center cloth at the ends.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  A few pinholes in the Point de Gaze mesh, occasional broken bride.

Auction ends: 3 days 18 hours from 10/13/2013 2:27 PM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller fluzyflapper, midlands, United Kingdom
Comments: I feel like I should know what this lace is, but I just can’t place it. Will have to hit the books on this one. The thread looks silk, but I’m not sure. Rather simple design of flowers sprayed against a ground that looks quite modern. The motifs have both half and whole stitch but not a lot of gimp work.  The ground crosses with 2 pair with I think just a whole stitch – photos not close enough to tell exactly. I’m thinking it might be Maltese  Mother of Pearl sticks.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  One tear at the upper edge, maybe some smaller ones, but otherwise looks good.
Soilage:  Looks a little brown, but that might be an original cream color.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments: A rectangular scarf of embroidered net. The embroidery looks needlerun, very closely done with a heavier thread.  This gives it an appearance almost like appliqued cloth.  The tulle is like that white heavy supple stuff you often find in English work.
Condition:
Modifications:  None
Damage:  One small repair and some pinholes.
Soilage:  Looks very good from the photos.

Comments: A long, fairly wide Point de Gaze border,  high end market. The petals in the raised petal roses have decorative windows, sign of a better manufacturer. Typical 2nd Empire romantic design, lots of flowers and swags.  Elaborate decoration in the centers of some roses, the ‘modes’ in the swags are good, but not particularly inventive.  An impressive piece, in a good, collectible size.
Condition:
Modifications:  No closeups of the ends, but I don’t think they are cut.
Damage:  Some small breaks in the mesh
Soilage:  Overall cream color with localized yellow marks.

This is their first event called ’24 Hours of Lace’, and is actually a challenge. Ten teams of six lacemakers will make one lace band 4″ wide with 24 pairs of bobbins for 24 hours. The finished product will be measured and judged by lace teacher Michèle Andraux.  In addition fourteen lacemaking clubs from the Grand-Ouest will be present, along with specialist vendors.
