Comments: An early Flemish tape lace, design in the process of breaking up into individual motifs. Bride ground of twisted pairs, mostly, although those along the lower edge look buttonholed in places. These might be repairs; you can see a few small repairs in the closeup views. The design looks intact.  Late 17th or early 18th century.  Generally good condition.

Comments: A bertha collar of Honiton, the shape is a little unusual and the design a bit scattered, not symmetric, but quite pleasant. A little on the snails/slugs side with the motifs and woven tally fillings nicely worked – especially the roses. Note the woven picoted brides. A few discolored spots and occasional broken bride. Generally good condition.

Comments: A rectangular veil of Honiton applique on machine net. It has the nicely draping very white net often found in English work. The motifs are quite large with woven tally grid fillings. A chain of flowers runs along the outer edge, and a few motifs are arranged in the corners, with smaller sprigs scattered in the main ground. Snails/slugs esthetic, well worked. Overall condition looks very good from the photos, although one end has no detailed photography. I do seem to see indications of an occasional pinhole in the net, very minor.

Comments: A Bruges bloemwerk narrow border. Note the picoted bride ground with the little spider islands, that’s a good bloemwerk characteristic. Not the most sophisticated design, but bold and well done, and I like the patterning of the trefoil leaves.  A little more advanced in design than much bloemwerk. Color looks a little cream from the photos, occasional rust spot. But basically very good condition.

Comments:  A modern interpretation of ‘Punto Tirato Tela Sfilata’, where threads are drawn out of a linen base to form a pattern, leaving a rectangular grid whipped on all sides for strength. The modern form of this lace hasn’t been well researched, however it was done in Sicily, probably also in Italy. The double-headed eagle motif was used extensively throughout history, in more modern times by Russia, the Austro-Hungarian empire and many Eastern European states. Hard to say what it means here, and if the use is any indication of place of manufacture. It might be something from a trousseau showing a heraldic element.  A few repairs, generally good condition.

Comments:  The border on this cloth is an embroidered net, but I’m not exactly sure how the net was made. It’s not Burato, which is embroidery on a leno weave. This one looks like  a drawnwork with the remaining rectangular lattice of threads whipped over. Some cutwork and drawnwork in the center cloth. Probably a Sicilian product, note the little looped picots on the edge, typical of that kind of work. Looks in very good condition.

Comments:  A shawl with a deep flounce, bobbinlace applique on machine net, with needle-made fillings. The lace is probably Belgian, and the form recalls the Spanish mantilla. Both the center triangle and the flounce look largely intact, although it would help to tell exactly if there was a photo of the entire piece laid flat. The tulle is a bit shredded in places, but localized damage. Some small pulls and breaks along the top edge, a few damaged fillings. It looks quite delicate. Basically good condition.

Comments:  The form is very Spanish – a large central mass of lace with a surrounding deep flounce. But the lace here looks more like Blonde de Caen, probably made for the Spanish market. With Spanish blondes the motifs are usually smaller, and they used a 6 pointed star filling rather than the honeycomb in this piece. There are usually woven esprits in Spanish pieces also.  It is a bit hard to tell how intact all the elements of this piece are since there isn’t one photo of the thing laid flat. Some pinholes in the net and some seam separation – racroc looks intact in the photos. Basically very good condition.

Comments:  A rectangular shawl of mixed lace. Bobbinmade motifs with needlemade ground resembling the Alençon réseau.  Later 19th century Belgian products like this usually went under the name Point de Milan. This one has a better pattern than is normally found, good work, and looks in very good condition. I don’t see any obvious problems from the photos.

Comments:  A collar of Duchesse de Bruxelles. Raised petal roses in the large center Point de Gaze insert, the two end inserts are flat. The bobbinlace is a little on the Bruges side, quite flat with a simple gimp outline. The bobbinlace is basically good condition, the needlelace has some rather sizable holes in the needlelace mesh. The entire piece is a little short of good condition.

Comments:  I checked through a few of my Honiton books but couldn’t find this pattern. Perhaps a LaceNews reader could identify the pattern and artist, Elsie Johnson. 20th century pattern, very nicely done, very good condition. Modern Honiton seems to emphasize areas of half stitch shading more than older pieces.

Comments:  A Belgian 2-part square pillow with bobbins, patterns, thread. Covered with a kind of blue denim-looking material. I don’t know how fine the white thread is, but it looks quite promising. The patterned I believe is pinned to the pillow, not sure, but the pins are very rusted.  Only one photo, but seller describes drawers in the ends, so I’ll assume this is a standard square pillow. From what I can see it looks in generally good condition, aside from the pinned pattern.

Comments:  An 18th c Flemish tape lace, hard to date exactly. A fairly symmetric design, rather like contemporary Point de France. Note the plaited ground, and I’ll hazard a guess threads from the ground are carried across the backs of the motifs. Some interesting fillings. This is another lace you have to be careful of; there were similar pieces made in England in the late 19th c.  Seller cites some small re-joins and minor pulls. The condition looks very good, almost too good for a really early piece.

The ‘bird’ figures referred to in the post look more like buds to me. A few pinholes in the mesh, some age discoloration, basically very good condition.

Comments:  A deep Carrickmacross guipure collar. Note the straight picots along the edge, and the lack of ‘Irish’ design elements. This tends to be better quality work in the spectrum of Carrickmacross, and the type is not well document. So we hope it is Carrickmacross. In this piece there’s an unusual cloth transition at the ends, unsure of the purpose. It might be an alteration to lengthen the piece. Occasional loose bride and stain, basically very good condition.
