http://tinyurl.com/qxfkb7p mid-18th Century Old Flanders Bobbin Lace Study piece
Size: 2.5″ x 33″
Starting Price: $55.00
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 10:25:03 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments:  An interesting continuous mid 18th c bobbinlace with the 5-hole ground. Sometimes this is simply known as ‘Flanders’, however Valenciennes of this period experimented with a lot of grounds, including this one. It has a typical Louis XV undulating design, which as the seller notes, can be mirror-paired to produce a wider piece. The condition is short of good with numerous holes and stains, but this doesn’t come up too often.

Size: 12.5″ square
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 10:28:57 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  An Honiton handkerchief, with a star shaped center and well-done monogram. the lace is snails/slugs esthetic, and turns the star into a very effective square. Tightly woven, good woven tally grid fillings, and I like the edging of the cloth. I don’t see any condition problems from the photos, generally very good condition.

Size: 16″ square
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 10:32:35 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A handkerchief of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. Includes a few small needlelace fillings for simple accents. It is a fairly large piece, typical of handkerchiefs made of this kind of lace. The motifs are fairly simple with a good pattern. A little frayed, some pulls in the tulle, some pinholes and a few tiny repairs. Generally good condition.

Size: 12″ square
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 10:41:17 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse handkerchief with raised petal rose Point de gaze inserts. The bobbinlace is a bit on the Bruges side, simple gimp outline, no raised work. a few tiny holes in the needlelace mesh and some loose and broken brides. Seller indicates the piece has recently been washed. Basically good condition.

http://tinyurl.com/pucyatt long flounce 18th c milanese bobbin lace family lace.72x 5and a half inchs

Starting Price: 30.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 11:11:13 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Milanese flounce, square plaited ground and a simple double tape and flowerhead pattern. The ground is a bit unusual, probably a later 18th or early 19th c piece. The lower edge looks added later. Condition is short of good; staining and some serious holes near one end. Damage is fairly well localized.

350845596699   Sold for 30.00 GBP, 1 bidder.

http://tinyurl.com/qxygwys LARGE ANTIQUE MOTHER OF PEARL AND LACE HAND FAN DISPLAY ONLY

Starting Price: $50.00
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 13:32:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller hollywoodjunque, Los Angeles, California, United States
Comments:  An interesting fan with Mother of Pearl sticks. The lace is almost a Point d’Angleterre – well done bobbinlace motifs with what looks like a Point de Gaze ground. At the same time it crosses over into the usually coarser Point de Milan, which has both bride and needle-made grounds. Here the bobbinlace is nicely done with bobbin-made fillings, while you would expect more needlelace ‘modes’ in Point d’A. The lace looks in basically very good condition, I don’t see any obvious problems in the photos. The sticks are badly broken.

350840449041   Sold for $261.90, 3 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/q6loypy Irish crochet collar shawl french doll dress german bears china doll

Starting Price: $9.99
Auction ends: Aug 02, 2013 18:31:54 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller rena_in_ohio, Toronto, Ohio, United States
Comments:  An Irish Crochet shawl collar. Tightly worked motifs of shamrocks, pinwheels and flowers. Ever notice how Irish crochet is almost always arranged with three lobed motifs?  The picots looked crocheted, not Clones knots, but it’s a bit hard to tell in the photos. No particular symmetry to the design, but it works nicely. Looks in overall very good condition.

Auction ends: Aug 03, 2013 06:57:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  A border of Italian Mezzo Punto – basically an early (mid 16th c) mixed tape lace made in imitation of Gros Point. The motifs are laid down with a woven tape, whether this is bobbin made is not known. Needlelace stitches are used as fillings, and the raised edges are worked as in Gros Point.  A well-done piece of this lace can be quite impressive. This one is interesting with a good variety of filling stitches and carefully done raised work. Hard to say if it’s been reworked; I can’t easily follow the design, so it probably has been. The condition looks very good for something this old, if indeed the date can be better verified. A few repairs and some fraying along the edges.

Size: 4″ x 4 yards 10″
Starting Price: $495.00 Buy-it-Now
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2013 10:33:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  This has a lot of the classic signatures of Pescocostanzo lace from the province of l’Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It is a guipure 6-pointed star ground. One might argue that they took the beginnings of the Milan tape lace tradition and made it into a guipure.  It also ties in well with the Northern Italian, Southern France freehand laces. This is a very little researched lace, yet it is extremely interesting with a variety of grounds and a rather chunky pattern (one of my favorite laces). The lower border in this piece is fairly elaborate, typical of Italian laces. Hard to date, maybe late 18th to early 19th c. A few brown stains, but looks in very good condition from the photos.

Size: 12″ square
Starting Price: 4.95 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2013 10:46:45 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  What specifically identifies this handkerchief as Honiton? Something about the way the roses are made, the little woven tally fillings, and the picoted brides. Not snails/slugs, but not too far away from that esthetic. It’s a bit hard to tell from the photos but I think the monograms are applied Honiton-made initials. Seller says this has been washed, and some faint browning to one corner. One separation lower center, basically very good condition.

330970139805   Sold for 57.00 GBP, 6 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/ke7asyo Early Study Fragment: Mezzo Punto needle lace

Starting Price: $55.00
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2013 16:06:07 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lacemerchant, Whiting, Indiana, United States
Comments:  Another Mezzo Punto piece, and an interesting comparison to the one reviewed above. Here the tapes are more obvious, and the raised edges seem a little clunky.  Still, enough survives to make this a good way to study how the raised edges were executed in the early Italian laces.  I won’t guess as to exact origin, but I don’t see obvious reasons to steer away from Italy.  The piece has been greatly altered, but ignoring that the lace is somewhat on the low side of good in condition.

http://tinyurl.com/kfhwh7s Antique Brussels Brabant Lace flounce – 18th or early 19th Century
Size: 13.5″ x 11 feet 3 ”
Starting Price: 10.00 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 03, 2013 10:24:23 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller moyamike, High Wycombe, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Brabant flounce, probably 2nd quarter 18th c. This type of lace often survives in wide, long lengths, and on that score this is exceptional. It has a typical combination plaited and bride ground. This type of lace was meant to be an imitation of the more sophisticated products of Ghent and Brussels, so the design, while typical, is more naive. I do see a few repairs along the top edge, condition is generally good.

281143173055   Sold for 201.60 GBP, 14 bidders.

http://tinyurl.com/m25p6ok Antique/vintage Brussels Duchesse and Poihnt de Gaze lace bolero wedding

Starting Price: 24.95 GBP
Auction ends: Aug 04, 2013 10:53:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltenham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A small bolero jacket of Brussels Duchesse. Costume items of this lace are very unusual, so it’s difficult to say if this is the original form. If not, someone did an extremely good job.  No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. Just a few pinholes in the needlelace mesh, occasional broken bride, everything else looks in very good condition.

Comments:  A pair of Duchesse de Bruges cuffs, no needlelace additions. Typical Duchesse design, some raised work in the veining. A few broken brides and separations along the edges, and a bit of a wrinkled washed look; generally good condition

Auction ends: Aug 04, 2013 11:32:51 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller poppy1109, Rochester, Kent, United Kingdom
Comments:  A bonnet veil of tambour embroidery on machine net. There’s a heavier silky gimp run in around the motifs. Very hard to place a date on something like this, just say later 19th c.  A few pinholes in the tulle, basically very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller linen-cupboard, Crawcrook, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom
Comments:  A bonnet veil of Honiton appliqued on machine net. Large floral motifs along the lower border, narrow border along the sides. No esprits in the ground, so it looks a little plain. The motifs are tightly woven, good woven tally grid fillings.  A few pinholes in the net, basically very good condition.

Auction ends: Aug 05, 2013 08:14:02 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller discover4, London, United Kingdom
Comments:  A square shawl of Brussels needlelace application on machine net. The motifs have a rather thin appearance, and the trimming of the tulle is a little rough in places. Needlelace applique in a piece this large is fairly rare. This has a good design of an outer and inner row of flowers, small sprigs used as esprits in the body of the tulle. Seller cites one small repair, and from the photos the condition looks generally very good.

Comments:  A needlerun embroidery mantilla. A very dense stitch pattern meant to imitate blonde, and it does a very good job of that.  Some pulls in the tulle, a few separations along the edge, and a little edge fraying. Basically good condition.

http://tinyurl.com/lbmo96b VINTAGE TENERIFFE LACE MAKING TOOLS – BRIGGS PATENT –
Size: marked piece 95mm
Starting Price: 3.00 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 29, 2013 04:06:32 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller lordlucan333, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  The lozenge shaped Briggs No 2 teneriffe template is fairly rare and this is a nice example. The other three appear to be home made, since Briggs only sold three forms. No 1 is a small wheel 2.25″ in diameter, and No 3 is very rare, a large aluminum wheel 4.25″ in diameter. Nos 1 and 2 were produced in brass and imitation tortoiseshell. These are designed to be pinned to a hard pillow, the pins stick up a bit and the lace web is strung around the pins. Very occasionally you come across an original Briggs pillow.  These items appear in very good condition.

Auction ends: Jul 29, 2013 19:13:50 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments:  A wide border of bobbinlace applique on machine net. There are a few simple needlelace fillings, and no esprits in the ground. The simple meandering design fills the space – a good middle market product. There are a few small repairs; the piece has been well cared for.  Overall good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments:  A border of tambour embroidery on machine net which often points toward a Belgian origin. Good dense work with a romantic design. Note the careful work on the sprigs used as esprits. Generally good condition, seller cites a few small holes in the tulle.

Offered by: Ebay seller sirjle, Paris, France
Comments:  A rectangular shawl of needlerun embroidered machine net. This technique was used in Limerick, but the motifs don’t have the Irish character you normally see, so a continental origin is also possible. Perhaps Lierre. The work is well done with an even, consistent design. Some pinholes in the tulle, and seller cites some small repairs. Overall good condition.

Comments:  This Delft figure doesn’t come up too often. It is nicely made, especially with the openwork on the chair. That often gets broken. It isn’t a traditional tin glaze, but a full porcelain finish. This one looks in very good condition, I don’t see any defects from the photos.

Comments:  The top lace here looks like an excellent machine copy of a mid 19th c Mechlin pattern. The bottom one is a 3rd quarter 18th c Mechlin piece with quite a free flowing design. Good fillings, excellent technique. Wish there was a width measurement., and although it’s not clear, I think it’s the shorter piece. Comments:  A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised work. Good design of flowers and leaves with some heavy rings used as decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Unfortunately there’s not full photo of the piece, but from what I can see it looks in basically very good condition. Seller cites a few small openings, and I do see a few pinholes in the mesh.

Offered by: Ebay seller 1860-1960, Moorpark, California, United States
Comments:  A Honiton fan of sophisticated design, later 19th c. Note the excellent figural work, and extensive woven tally fillings.  An impressive looking piece.  The mounting has helped in preservation, although I do see a few frayed places in in the fillings, especially on the left side. There’s also an opening on the lower left edge. There appears to be some discoloration along the inner edge, almost as if this was used as a collar. Basically very good condition. An important piece.

Offered by: Ebay seller heartnsoul1, Hollis, New Hampshire, United States
Comments:  I’m thinking this isn’t a shawl but a skirt cover, although for the mid 19th c period one might expect a more oval shape. Doesn’t look like the ‘neckline’ or ‘waistline’ has been modified. Chantilly with ombre shading, quite an elaborate romantic design. The motifs are quite large, and note the occasional use of esprits. The few ‘neckline’ closeups show several racroc tears, one quite ragged, but these are fairly localized.  A few pinholes, basically good condition.

Comments:  Another impressive Point de Gaze fan from this seller, MOP sticks. Note the pointed raised petals which have little diamond shaped windows in the clothwork, sing of a better manufacturer.  Good decorative ‘mode’ fillings. Two rather major brown stains which aren’t good for the delicate Point de gaze mesh.  I don’t see any obvious breaks, and I’ll rate this basically good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller deliachai, Castelar, Northampton, United Kingdom
Comments:  A bolster pillow, horseshoe stand, with over 50 Midlands spangled bobbins of wood and bone. Can’t tell how old the bobbins are, but the two shown on the pillow appear to be decorated. The canvas cover on the pillow looks original, a lacemaker would have added additional colored cloth as a background to her/his work. Overall an outstanding set, very good condition. Wish there were more photos of the stand, I don’t see the wear that I would expect on the footpiece. May have been refinished.

Comments:  A reasonably wide flounce of Duchesse de Bruxelles, joined in a circle and probably removed from a skirt. No raised work in the Point de Gaze inserts. The piece has a good, dense design with lots of raised work in the leaves.  A few pinholes in the mesh, broken brides and discoloration. Basically very good condition.

Comments:  A whitework embroidery shawl with lots of pulled thread embroidery. Just today Heather Toomer wrote me saying that her new book “White-embroidered costume accessories: the 1790s to 1840s” has just been published – she got her copies on Tuesday, http://tinyurl.com/kzv3zyl. It specifically addressing this kind of work, although I don’t know the date of this specific piece..  Hopefully this will enable us  to more clearly identify items in a confusing area.
This piece comes with a provenance; the Boone family, although no date is given. Rather wrinkled, and a few pulls in the work, generally good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller derbeatle, Cheltonham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A large spread of applique on machine net, also with a lot of tambour embroidery. Not sure if the motifs are tamboured on, photos not close enough to tell. Thy are carefully done with a good naturalistic design. Likely Belgian work. It is back with blue silk, which probably accounts for the generally very good condition.

Comments:  A lappet scarf of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. I was considering Honiton on this, but the motifs are too densely worked, and the fillings more varied. Seller cites 3 tiny holes and come browning, generally good condition.

Comments:  A two-layer Maltese lappet scarf, the inner layer with good guipure on a wire ground, the outer with Maltese crosses on a plaited ground. Several holes that aren’t just separations, so I’ll have to rate the condition this short of good.

Comments:  A typically long and reasonably wide Chantilly border. The very black thread probably indicates a Belgian origin.  Looks in generally very good condition, I don’t see any problems from the photos.

Comments:  A three-part Maltese collar. Wheat ear along the neckline, Maltese crosses on a dense woven leave mat in the second middle layer, and alternating crosses and flowers on the outer 3rd layer. This is a standard design for Maltese. Generally good condition, although I think a see a few breaks in the woven leaf ground.

Comments: A rectangular shawl of Brussels bobbinlace applique on machine net. I see a few simple needlelace fillings, not many. Good naturalistic design that fills the space well. The technique on the motifs is a bit loose. It also has a number of holes in the net, ranging from tiny to fairly large, so I have to rate the condition as short of good.

Comments: An impressive looking Milanese flounce, late 17th or early 18th c with a heraldic motif. Probably a family piece made for something like  a wedding. Interesting clothwork treatment, and a widely varied set of fillings, and the tapes are almost broken up fully into separate motifs. I think it is intact, you can follow the design fairly well. There is one join.  I’ll assume it’s ex. coll. Pat Earnshaw since it is illustrated in one of her books. One thing that’s throwing me a little is the unusual ground, one sometimes called a ‘rose’ ground. The elaborate nature of this piece and the unusual ground might point to a slightly later date. The little border on the lower edge is composed of two separate pieces of lace, Italian or Flemish, I’m not sure. Probably a later addition. There are several repairs, generally good condition.

Comments: A Honiton triangular shawl, applique on machine net. Black Honiton comes up occasionally, probably worn for mourning. This is an excellent example with large groups of flowers and leaves in each corner, and well done motifs with detailed tally fillings. Note the small sprigs used as esprits.   One patched repair, basically very good condition.

Comments: A rectangular bobbinlace scarf appliqued on droschel ground. It’s a bit hard to tell from the photos but the lower petals of the flowers might be needlelace. This kind of applique on handmade net was made in Belgium up to about 1840, and has some of the finest spun linen thread ever seen. The net was made in strips and joined together, you can see the strips in the photos. The join is a little weak in this kind of lace, but nowhere near as delicate as the point ground racroc stitches. This piece has a fairly simple design, but the actual technique is very good. Condition is basically good, there are a number of pulls and repairs in the net, but no more than you usually find in a piece like this.

Comments: Yet another bobbinlace applique on droschel ground, which has a superb drape. It is also quite large. Probably 1820-1840. I have a similar shawl with documentation saying it was purchased in 1840 and used as a wedding veil. A very beautiful piece with a few well done repairs. Overall very good condition.

Comments: This is the successor to the droshel ground lace, but with the same quality in the bobbinlace motifs.  Appliqued on a fine machine net, and probably after 1850. The Honiton pointers here are basically the extensive tally fillings, but this is completely out of the snail/slugs phase. A high end market piece, and in overall very good condition. Exceptionally good.

Comments: An Abruzzi l’Aquila linen tape lace, probably sometime in the 18th century. The simple symmetric tapework is very recognizable, and easy to work. But lots of sewings. The lower edge is frayed and seems cut sometimes, hard to tell if it is intact as intended. The upper edges seems to have been rolled as a hem, also don’t know if this is original.  Condition is short of good, but this lace doesn’t come up for sale very often.

Comments: A Valenciennes border with both snowflake and partridge eye filling, putting it ~1730. The flowers might be violets. This is a much finer piece than the photos indicate – note is is only 1.5″ wide. Some staining, and a few frays in the clothwork, but basically very good condition for the age.

Comments:  Puncetto Valsesiano needlelace doesn’t come up for sale very often, yet for some reason the LaceNews piece I wrote about it click here is the most popular piece on the blog, by over a factor of two (the second most popular is Lace of the Month: Bucks). Just goes to show the degree of interest in the knotted needlelaces. This example is small, but crisply worked with a good ‘reticella-like’ pattern for which this lace is famous. Comments:  A veil of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net. A little hard to tell from the photos but I think it’s a bonnet veil. The design is quite light, and the motifs small and carefully made.  Seller cites 3 minor holes, and from studying the photos I’ll rate the condition as basically very good.

Comments:  A border of Belgian Point d’Angleterre, which is a fine pieced bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze Ground, needlelace fillings and decorative ‘modes’. This example has been shaped, not sure if this is original. It is a good example of this lace, which as a new combinatorial type developed rather late, and is one of the best Belgian laces. Note the lacemakers went the extra mile with esprits in the mesh, something you hardly ever see in Point de Gaze. I do find the main design a little crowded. Basically very good condition, just a few small holes in the mesh.

Comments:  A Duchesse border with a sophisticated asymmetric repeat. Seller is offering another section of this lace as Ebay item 390629341014. Comments:  A collar with long ends of Duchesse de Bruges. In contrast to the piece reviewed just before this one, there is some raised roll work, but mostly larger, gimp-outlined motifs rather standardized in form. All put together quite nicely. One broken bride, basically very good condition.  Keep you eye on this seller who has had a number of good Buy-it-Now listings recently.

Comments:  Another characteristic of Duchesse de Bruges are the little ‘islands’ in the brides. This piece is simple, but quite interesting, with halfstitch used for most of the clothwork. The spaces in the lower flowers look almost like they were meant to be filled with needlelace, but the lacemaker used picoted brides instead.  It is quite narrow, and I think more delicate than the photos indicate. Seller cites a few light stains, basically very good condition.

Comments:  A white silk border of, well, I guess I’ll call it Blonde since there are a few heavy clothwork areas, but could also be a Chantilly.  This is an interesting piece design-wise. The short repeat seems a little clumsy, but well made, with an interesting filling of ‘islands’ all done in halfstitch. Seller cites several (unknown how many) seams and a few damaged areas near the top. Basically good condition.
Yes, it has a machine-made look, but the stitches flow into the transitions as you would expect in a bobbinlace. Wish there were an extremely closeup of the picot and top edges, from which questions like this are easily resolved.

Starting Price: 24.99 GBP
Auction ends: Jul 25, 2013 06:16:14 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller flip-floplace, Northampton, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  Haven’t seen this seller around for a while, welcome back! This is a typical Belgian two-part pillow – the narrower top section can be moved to the bottom to allow more room for the bobbins at the end of a piece. They haven’t really been made for years, but at one time their manufacture was quite a cottage industry in Belgium.  Many are stuffed with wool, seller indicates straw here. The drawers in the base and back of the rounded part are quite typical and basically used for storage. The back drawer might have been used to store the completed lace as it was being made, but it’s a bit of a rough handling for delicate piece, and I question if it was really used much that way. This pillow has the original canvas cover which was usually covered by a darker cloth by the lacemaker.  The plaid oilcloth provides some stiffening upon which one could give the bobbins a little bounce.  Looks in very good condition, and a very nice example of a famous pillow.

Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruxelles fan with carved and decorated Mother of Pearl sticks. The quality of the lace is high, with naturalistic roses in the Point de Gaze inserts (I don’t think they have raised petals). I like the asymmetry of the inserts. Seller says the lace is discolored and soiled, some places pulled away from the sticks. But basically it looks intact, although I think I see a few pinholes in the needlelace ground. Some damage to the sticks. It’s an impressive looking piece, but overall I’ll rate condition on the lower end of good.

Comments:  A tape lace with plaited 6-point star ground. You see this primarily in 17th century Milanese, but it also shows up in contemporary Flemish laces. Some might say that the threads passing across the backs of motifs is more a Flemish characteristic, although the simplistic design speaks more of speed of execution than Flemish esthetic. Others might say they don’t have a clue. No one has really done a thorough, systematic study of the French and Italian tape laces (despite Ricci’s attempts), even though understanding these is key to understanding the development of pieced laces and mesh grounds. Read and Kincaid may have brought Milanese into the contemporary sphere, but the originals are floating a little bit lost. Not to mention how this all breaks off into the Eastern European laces.
I’ll go with Flemish on this, one other reason being the very plain header – Milanese typically goes in for something fancier. Looks in overall very good condition.

Comments:  There is an Italian tape lace, quite recognizable as Abruzzi l’Aquila (where they had the big earthquake). Lots of photos of this type of lace in Ricci, starting plate 300. This dense, symmetric meandering lace I find quite impressive, and also easy to work (lots of sewings). This particular piece builds on that foundation, but includes some silk thread edgings to the tapes, which might speak to a more eastern European origin. Seller cites one small area of wear, basically very good condition.

Offered by: Ebay seller pursediva, Pasadena, California, United States
Comments:  A Mantilla of silk Maltese lace.  Five layers (I think), in the central area. Maltese was made in narrow strips which fit their pillows well, and sewn together later. I think in the future I’m going to try and estimate the number of layers when reviewing these pieces. Here Layer 1 is the central Maltese cross surrounded by wheat ear stalks. Layers 2 and 4 have good guipure work, 2 with a wire mesh ground, 4 with woven leaves. Layer 3 has a typical alternating cross/oval repeat, and the outer edge is a repeat of a flower motif. Layers 4 and 5 continue into the lappet ends of the piece. Sometimes I wonder that Maltese looks as good as it does with all the different layers.
Seller cites some tiny breaks, 2 small storage spots, and I think the outer edge looks a little frayed in the photos, probably just a bit wrinkled. Basically very good condition.

Comments:  This looks like a mantilla of white silk Maltese lace, but I’m not so sure.  There are no Maltese crosses, and the center insert has an almost Torchon like quality. I’ve also never seen the ‘point’ ground used as a filling the the outer guipure. Still, for lack of anything else definite I’ll call it Maltese, but also note that similar work was done in France and Russia.  Seller cites a few brown spots, and I’m not so sure that there aren’t a few small holes along the border near the points – photos not close enough to tell for sure. Basically very good condition.

Comments:  I’m not certain that this is Chantilly; the design is a bit plain, and I dno’t see the fillings one might expect, except perhaps used in the banding along the top, bottom and ends. Advisable to write the seller to get some closeups.  This is a real mourning fan, with the black lace and black sticks.  Looks in overall good condition, however there are no closeups, and the seller provides limited information.

Comments:  It is difficult to really examine this piece since most of the photos are taken from the back side. Appears to be a 19th c Belgian Venise copy from the loosely spaced buttonholed cordonnet – same technique is used in Point de Gaze. It has a good bold design, only one break along the upper edge. Basically very good condition.

Comments:  A Cantu bobbinlace table linen. Might be a Belgian piece – I don’t really see the rolls of threads broken out of the tapes to form new branches. The motifs look more separate, and sewn in to the main design – more a Belgian technique.  Not certain here. A few broken brides, basically good condition.

Comments:  A border of mid 18th c Brussels bobbinlace with droschel ground. The work is quite fine, and note the snowball fillings in the ribbon motifs. I don’t think it has been cut down. A bit hard to determine the condition since it was photographed on a light blue ground making it hard to see details. Seller cites minor broken brides and tiny brown spots – basically very good condition for the age.

Comments:  A bertha collar of Maltese lace.  Good guipure throughout, with a slight variation of the Maltese cross on the inner layer.  Looks a bit wrinkled and perhaps discolored around the neck. Just speculation, but there might have been a very narrow border around the neckline at one time. Overall good condition.  Nice to see a seller from Ipswich, although the lace is definitely not.

Comments:  I think this is an early English flat needlelace because of the knotted stitches (very typical of 17th c England), and the slightly random design. Where it is in entirely original condition would need detailed examination  under a microscope. The design is fairly symmetric, breaking down a bit in the middle. I haven’t seen this kind of edge treatment before.  Very interesting piece, and it looks in very good condition. Sometimes pieces like this have words or dates included in the clothwork, but I don’t see anything obvious here.

Comments:  A rectangular shawl of Honiton applique on machine net. Black examples like this do show up occasionally, and it’s hard to tell if they are dyed or original. The design on this one is a little ‘pieced’ together, with different kinds of large flower sprays scattered about, but still with a symmetry. Very minor broken brides and pulls in the net, basically very good condition.

Comments:  A flounce of Belgian bobbinlace applique on droschel ground. I’m thinking early 19th century – it looks a bit on the romantic side to be much earlier, and applique is a later product. We do know this type of work continued to about 1840. I do think it is Belgian, even with the rather large areas of fillings, which is more typical of Honiton. The quality of the piece, and the use of the very fine, regular droschel ground really wasn’t done in England. This one has a rather thin design, very well done with extensive fillings in larger open spaces. It is rare to see this kind of lace in border form, it tends to be used more for veils (if you look closely at the upper edge, it might have been cut from something larger, there’s some discontinuity in the design). Some discoloration, a few tiny repairs, but basically in very good condition. This type of lace represents some of the very last use of superfine handspun linen thread. I see there are a few other examples of this type of lace coming up for Sunday’s Ebay Alerts; quite unusual.  I would regard this as an exceptional piece, and a nice ending for today’s Alerts.

Comments:  A flat needlelace fallcap. Looks like Point de Gaze, but a little atypical design. These really flat pieces come around now and then and really haven’t been properly researched. The outlines of the motifs are a little irregular, almost like it’s been washed, but this might just be a result of the working method. This one has some tiny holes in the mesh, but everything looks intact; basically good condition.

Comments:  An Irish Crochet collar with long points. A dense design with a lot of circular motifs – I especially like the little pinwheel design. Not entirely sure how that’s made – looks like a really long bullion stitch.  Picots are loops of crochet.  Seller sites 2 loose brides (one makes a hole in a pinwheel along the neckline). Overall good condition.

Comments:  I think this is one of the Lille variations, it resembles the slightly heavier laces often found on headwear in the low countries. The dense pattern and the use of esprits in the ground also resembles the Beveran style, although this is obviously not Beveran.  I think the border has been cut to go around the corners. Looks in overall good condition.  Note, I’ve written a piece on Regency lace http://tinyurl.com/af9umng and I don’t see a lot of markers here that would put it in that category.

Comments:  A christening gown covered in finely worked Irish Crochet which some valenciennes along the neckline. I’ll defer to the seller on condition, which seems short of good, although the overall photos aren’t bad looking. I’m always impressed how the Irish Crochet can be used as a actual textile in fashion creating some very interesting looks. There are no detailed closeups of the lace, but it does have an earlier design sometimes going under the name ‘imitation guipure’.

Comments:  A bedspread of embroidered and applique net. The embroidery appears to be tambour, and there is an interesting combination with muslin applique. Unfortunately no photo of the entire thing so it’s a bit hard to get an overall impression. But the sections shown have a good, well executed design. I’m thinking it’s a Belgian piece. Seller cites minor age stains and a few small openings. Overall good condition.

Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse collar with long front points. Note the unusually large raised petal rose insert center back, and further inserts on the sides with decorative ‘mode’ fillings. The bobbinlace has a more flat bruges-like appearance. There are a few broken brides throughout, and the needlelace looks quite good. Basically good condition.

Comments:  A Duchesse collar, no needlelace inserts.  Conventionally the custom has been to call lace like this with Point de Gaze inserts “Duchesse de Bruxelles”, and without Point de Gaze “Duchesse de Bruges”. I think we need to rethink that, since there’s a lot of possibility of confusion with Bruges Bloemwerk, and it’s very difficult to tell where such things were made. So I’m calling this just “Duchesse”, since you really couldn’t tell the difference in technique from something that had needlelace. The best thing to do would be to go back to the original manufacturers and see what they called these thing, and take what early 20th century English writers say on the subject with a lot of caution.
This piece has a good design, note the interesting raised trails against halfstitch in a band around the outside.  There’s a separate piece attached along the neckline. It does have that rather wrinkled ‘washed’ appearance, and a loose bride here  and there. Overall good condition.

Comments:  An interesting 19th c square-meshed Valenciennes border. Narrower than it looks from the photos. The motifs are solidly worked relying on a little openwork for definition. It’s almost a throwback to the mid 18th c work, although cast in a more 19th century simplistic bed linens design. No esprits, which is a bit unusual for this period. Only two photos and no comments on condition, but what I see I’ll call very good condition.

Comments:  A collar of bobbinlace guipure, perhaps floral beds, but the design and the way the  woven leaves are treated might be more on the Cluny side. It’s a hard call, but maybe more Beds. There’s a separate piece attached on the neckline, and I can’t tell if there’s been some cutting at the neckline points.  Looks basically in very good condition from the photos, just a little age discoloration.

Comments:  I’m putting this one out of date order so you can compare this piece with the ‘Beds’ collar reviewed above. This one is much more typical of Cluny or Miracourt. Note the use of the gimp, the rosettes of woven leaves, and the raised tallies on halfstitch in the flowers. These are all more Cluny characteristics. The lace looks intact but a little wrinkled,  and the woven leaf rosettes aren’t so crisp. Overall good condition.

Comments:  A Duchesse handkerchief, tending toward the Bruge style.  The design relies on relatively few motifs, organized well.  A few raised ribs in some leaves, and note the large flowers with the half-stitch shading elements. A few broken brides and some large brown spots, especially in the center cloth. Basically good condition.

Comments:  A Duchesse de Bruges fan with inlaid Mother of Pearl sticks. An asymmetric Point de Gaze insert in the center, no raised work in the needlelace. No raised work in the bobbinlace either, basically gimp-outlined motifs. The lace looks intact, seller says it’s a little grubby with a few ‘marks’, and one guard stick has a repair. Overall good condition.

Comments:  One of the key identifiers of Branscombe is the little edge of double buttonhole stitch groups, which seems to be used on this piece. But there are other elements not present, such as looped picot brides and the heavily ribbed spiderweb decorations. Plus a lot of Branscombe has a much denser design. But it varied widely, so it is a possibility. Interesting design, sort of an Art Nouveau flavor. The condition appears very good from the photos. And they are really nice photos.
