Valenciennes lappets (despite a repair), lot 436
A collection of 3 rather unusual lappets, log 439
Border group, lot 449
Alençon/Argentan pieces lot 450
6 mainly Flemish alb flounces, lot 453
A Milanese heraldic flounce, lot 455
A group of Honiton applique pieces, lot 456

Size: 1.75″ (no engrelure) x 100.5″
Starting Price: $75.00 with reserve
Auction ends: May 2, 2013 15:56:52 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments:  A fine Flemish bobbinlace, I’d put it around 1740. The motifs are very crisp and well executed.  Note the snowflake fillings. Very good condition, unusual to find something this good, in all 3 areas of importance to collectors – design, technique, condition. My only gripe is the join ~1/3rd of the way from one end.

Starting Price: $45.00
Auction ends: May 3, 2013 03:18:18 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller amberfarleigh, Richmond, N. Yorkshire, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Point de Gaze handkerchief, no raised petals on the roses, which often indicates a better quality piece. Some ‘mode’ fillings, nothing fancy. The design is dense and naturalistic, with a good presence overall.  A few stains and occasional pinhole in the net. It’s all a little wrinkled, but everything looks well intact.  Good condition overall.

Offered by: Ebay seller onlysunnydays49, Saint John, Indiana, United States
Comments:  Looks like a Bruge Bloemwerk shawl collar with picoted square meshed brides. The motifs are large and a little loosely worked, but everything seems appropriate to the size of the piece. Looks in very good condition from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller onlysunnydays49, Saint John, Indiana, United States
Comments:  A shawl collar of one of those intdeterminate guipures, perhaps French. But could be German or Easter European – many possibilities.  Thread looks linen to me, but that’s just a guess. The design looks a little ‘layered’ to me, there’s a lot going on. It’s an unusual and rather dramatic piece, looks in very good condition from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller onlysunnydays49, Saint John, Indiana, United States
Comments:  A lappet collar of Duchesse, on the Bruges side in design.  No needlelace that I can see.  A good middle market product with a typical design of flowers and trefoil leaves. Looks in very good condition from the photos.

Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A deep Maltese shawl collar.  Good guipure on the inner section with large, well worked Maltese crosses.  Nice sun design on the inner portion, and small flower roundels on the outer edge. The points at the opening edge look a little strange, almost cut off. Maltese was almost always pieced together, so it might just be a finishing choice. Seller notes that some loose spots, and one split in the back. Overall good condition.

Auction ends: 1 day from 5/2/2013 8:50 AM MST
Offered by: Ebay seller reddolly123, Nottingham, United Kingdom
Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse fan with raised petal roses in the Point de Gaze inserts. The roses are a bit more naturalistic than usual, and the bobbinlace well done with some raised work. Very good condition, I don’t see any problems with the lace, and the Pt de G mesh looks well intact. Sticks appear to be a very dark imitation tortoiseshell, and note the intact loop on the bottom. All it lacks is the tassle. Seller notes one stick needs reattaching.

Comments:  There have been several of these ‘lace merchant’ tableaus on Ebay recently. This is unusual, since the lace merchant normally is a single figure with a chest overflowing with lace, sometimes with a basket.
The first of these is by Amy Sylvette, the second by Jouglas, both excellent designers of dressed santons – the Jouglas piece seems more innovative, it’s an earlier maker, probably the first to dress the clay figures with sewn garments.  See http://tinyurl.com/8jjuscy for a collecting article I posted on French Santon lacemakers.  The second seller sold a similar set last week, Ebay #390583653056 (shown below). Both sets appear in very good condition.

Auction ends: May 03, 2013 12:36:19 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller bethsalie, paris, Île-de-France, France
Comments:  A Point de Gaze handkerchief with rather elaborate raised petal roses. Good and varied ‘mode’ fillings, and I like the edge treatment next to the cloth center. Condition is a little short of good, with many small holes in the needlelace mesh, difficult to repair.  The overall design is impressive – so often these PtdG handkerchiefs have a kind of tourist quality about them. Not this one.

Offered by: Ebay seller bertieslinenandlace, Newton Aycliffe, United Kingdom
Comments:  A black Maltese triangular shawl. Unfortunately there’s no photo of it laid flat, so it’s a bit hard to access the design and condition. There appear to be a lot of breaks in the photos. I see rather typical Maltese motifs, but it’s hard to say how it all fits together.

Auction ends: May 03, 2013 14:01:12 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller greatlace, Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Comments:  A later 18th c cap back of Belgian bobbinlace with droschel ground. I don’t think this is applique, it looks like the earlier practice of making the motifs separately, and sewing the ground into them afterward. The ground is made in strips, usually about 1″ wide, sewn together as they were made in the piece.  The design is a bit thin, but these don’t come up very often. What was once a fairly ordinary piece is now rather special. The condition looks very good, a few pulls in the ground, nothing really important.

Size: 14″ across
Starting Price: 9.99 GBP
Auction ends: May 03, 2013 14:27:21 PDT
Offered by: Ebay seller garchick, Tunbridge Wells, United Kingdom
Comments:  A smaller Irish Crochet collar, with a trefoil and kind of snowflake design of raised rings.  I’ve seen this motif before in some very impressive cuffs and neckpieces. Here it creates a very dense textile with rather scattered elements.   I think the picots are clusters of double crochet – hard to tell. The neckline is stained – proper wash could fix that, and there’s no damage to the lace itself. So I’ll call it very good condition.

Comments:  A cap of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  The design goes a bit off in the cap portion – could have been more symmetric. I don’t see any signs that it was remade.  This is an unusual form for this lace.  The condition looks good from the photos. There are two nicely done repairs to the machine net, something you don’t often see.

Comments:  A narrow rectangular scarf of Honiton guipure, at least 100 years old according to seller’s provenance. Snails/slugs esthetic, with a good, crowded English flower garden look.  I’m having trouble spotting the birds the seller mentions. Condition is very good – unusually good.

Comments:  There is only one photo here, but it looks like Brussels application on machine net, very long.  The motifs are well done, and note the little leaves and tendril esprits in the upper ground.  No condition notes, but it looks good from the one photo. Seller warns that the post might close because this is listed on some other site, but doesn’t say where.

Comments:  In looking at figures of lacemakers from various countries, England tends to have a lot of custom dressed dolls.  This one has a straw filled body, blue glass eyes, and I’m not familiar with the rest of the doll collecting terms.   Interesting bolster pillow which looks set up by someone that knows what they were doing.  Condition is short of good particularly on the doll’s head and some moth holes in the cloths. But it is a very good example of a custom English lacemaker doll, and might have some good age on it.

Comments:  A higher end market large Point de Gaze fan with Mother of Pearl – abalone sticks. Framed in a nice shadow box. No raised petals in the roses, and the design is quite naturalistic, with good ‘mode fillings especially along the top. Note the windows in some rose petals, sign of a better manufacturer. I’m a bit surprised that something this good ended up with the rather ordinary MOP sticks. One loose stick, one small hole in the mesh near the front guardstick. Overall good condition.

Comments:  A Chantilly fan with MOP/Abalone sticks.  The centering of the leaf seems a little off, as if the guard stick were not positioned properly.  The lace motifs are small and well executed, lying nicely against the ground. Wish there were some good closeups of the lace. Comes with original box.  No defects in the lace that I can see from the photos. Overall very good condition.

Comments:  A handkerchief of Point d’Angleterre – fine bobbinlace with a Point de Gaze ground. This one relies heavily on leaf motifs with some small buds for filling effect, and larger flowers at each corner.  Nicely done, this was one of the finer modern Belgian laces. The center cloth has a few pin holes (from real pins this time), and the lace has a few spots. Overall very good condition.

Comments:  A Point de Gaze lappet scarf. No raised work, but the ring fillings find some unusual uses as ‘mode’ fillings. The lace seems to be a cream color; a few spots and small holes in the joining section. Could have really popped if photographed against a darker color – light lace on a light background tends to bring out all the defects. Of which there are few in this piece – I’ll rate it very good condition except for that small hole.

Comments:  A border of Brussels bobbinlace application on machine net.  Good middle-market design with simple esprits in the upper ground. Other than it is fairly wrinkled, it looks in very good condition from the photos.  From what I can see the net looks intact.

Comments:  A Duchesse collar, on the Bruges side with a deeply scalloped border.  Just a little raised work – most motifs are simply outlined with gimp and crisply worked. It seems to be a good design, just wish the whole thing were visible on a darker background.  Looks in good condition from the photos.

Comments:  A Brussels Duchesse bertha. Raised petals in the Point de Gaze roses. The placement of the PdG inserts is a little off, seller thinks it might have been mended. But I can’t spot a mend. The design is very typical for this type of bertha. Quite a few small holes in the Point de Gaze ground. Basically good condition, but a little on the negative side.

Comments:  A short border of Point de Gaze, no raised work. Note the varied ‘mode’ fillings used quite effectively, also the single pointed picots along the bottom edge. Technically the work is very good. Condition is very good, no problems that I can see. Wish there were more of it.

Comments:  An interesting Irish Crochet collar. The raised work on the large flowers almost reminds me of my grandmother’s popcorn stitch bedspread. Lots of Clones knots on the brides in places, other parts are the Rose of Sharon patter.  It does have a rather pieced together look; some of the border areas almost look added later. Still it is an interesting combination of techniques. Overall good condition.

Comments:  A long, narrow lappet scarf of Duchesse. It makes quite effective use of basically 2 motifs – leaves with raised work, and small flowers.  Definitely a different design for this lace.  One break toward the center, a little stained, basically good condition.

Comments:  A length of Mechlin with a good mid 19th c design.  It has a kind of Beveran design feel. Some of the open space work along the lower border hasn’t held up too well, they look a little frayed.  Good condition in general.
